Alice Hyland- March 27, 2002 COLVILLE, WA - Alice Hyland, age 81, passed away January 29, 2002, at the Pinewood Terrace Nursing Home in Colville, Washington. She rejoins her beloved husband, Otto, who preceded her in death on August 11, 2001. She was born in Duluth, Minnesota, to Olaf Alfred Lind and Marie (Larsen) Lind on October 27, 1920. She had numerous health difficulties that had taken much from this loving and industrious person. She had a talent for crocheting and making beautiful quilts, and was an excellent cook. She loved to garden and canned many of the vegetables and fruits she grew in her yard. Her best friend, Ida Mae Culler, who had watched over and cared for her during her time in the nursing home, was with her at the time of her death. Alice had one brother, Louis Lind, who preceded her in death. Alice was raised in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. Her mother died when Alice was five years-old and a foster family raised her and her brother, Louis Lind, on a dairy farm. She had to work very hard from a young age and this work ethic was ingrained in her later life. She met and married Otto, the love of her life, and they were together for the next 55 years. They headed west after W.W.II and settled in the Orchard Avenue area of Spokane. There they raised two sons, Roger and Bruce, and formed strong friendships with other neighborhood families. Alice loved to cook and was famous for her homemade rolls and chocolate cake. She was a housewife when her family was young and while Otto worked at the Inland Empire paper mill. She later worked at the Cresent department store and then as a teacher's aid for the Spokane school district. One of her and Otto's favorite activities was camping. During these trips they discovered Deep Lake and eventually built a cabin there. They took great delight in this cabin and spent many hours fishing together on the lake. After retirement they made the cabin their home along with winter trips to Arizona in their motor home. They enjoyed playing cards with all their friends. As age took its toll, they purchased a home in Colville where they could be close to health care and the senior center. Alice and Otto were extremely devoted to each other and it is a joy that they are now reunited. Surviving are two sons, Roger Hyland of Colville, WA, Brice Hyland and wife, Isabelle, and grandson Matthew of Perry, Utah; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held at Danekas Funeral Chapel in Colville, Washington on Friday, February 1, with family and friends meeting at a local restaurant before the memorial service. Also attending the service in Washington with Bruce, Isabelle and Matt were granddaughter, Tori (Bonham) McFarland, her husband, Steve and his son, Ian of Salt Lake City, Utah.
