Condolences may be extended to the family at: www.rogersandtaylor.com John Earl Johnston To his Clinton family he was "Earl," to his Logan in-laws he was "Johnny," but to those in between he was always J. Earl, the choir director with the big voice, quick wit and swashbuckling style. John Earl Johnston - singer, pilot, teacher and competitor - passed away on May 10, 2002 from natural causes. He was 79. Over the years, he had been fond of telling his choirs, "You can't sing with the angels if you don't know the music." He spoke as someone who knew the music. For 35 years he was a music teacher and administrator in the Box Elder school district. On the side, he conducted the Box Elder Symphonic Choir and performed locally. Whether donning a kilt with his high school students in a production of "Brigadoon" or soloing in a Bach oratorio, he enjoyed sharing his gifts. He will likely best be remembered, however, for singing classic church songs like "The Holy City" and "Bless This House" at funerals, homecomings, farewells, weddings and other social events throughout the region - always accompanied on the piano by his competent and cheerful wife, Joy. J. Earl was born in Clinton, Utah on July 22, 1922 to David and Ivy Manning Johnston, two days before the 75th anniversary of the arrival of the Mormon pioneers. The pioneers and Nauvoo would become a theme in his life. He joined the U. S. Army Air Corps at the beginning of World War II and quickly became the top pilot of a B-24 bomber crew. He flew "snooper" missions off the east coast of the United States during the war, patrolling for enemy vessels. On Nov. 9, 1944 he married Florence Joy Slack in the Logan, LDS Temple. They settled in Brigham City in 1948, where they both became teachers. J. Earl later completed a Masters Degree in education at USU. His military training made him a demanding and disciplined choir director who was not above flinging an eraser at a distracted tenor or challenging a trouble-maker to an arm wrestling match. He served as bishop of the Brigham City 11th ward, stake executive secretary and in other callings. In 1956 he was named Outstanding Young Man of Brigham City. In later years, the Johnstons served a mission to Nauvoo in 1991-92. On his mission, J. Earl was privileged to stand in the Carthage Jail where John Taylor had stood and sing the hymn "A Poor Wayfaring Man of Grief," as Pres. Taylor had done for Joseph Smith. His rendition of "Old Man River" became a Nauvoo Mission hallmark. During his life, J. Earl battled through cancer, a heart attack - even an airplane crash - but the most devastating blow came in 1996 when his wife Joy unexpectedly passed away. Yet old soldier that he was, however, he marched on, and on Nov. 18, 1999 a gleam returned to his eye when he married fellow temple-worker, Roma Harper. For the following three years they made the temple the focus of their lives. Between them, they share nine children, 40 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. J. Earl's passions in life were few, but intense. He loved music, temple work and his family. He was also a relentless golfer, taking pride in his booming drives and given to inventing little quips. "Life is like a tap-in bogey," he'd often say. In the last days of his life, as he drifted in and out of consciousness, he was visited by good friend, Max Robinette. "Earl," he said, "I need some advice. Should I get a five wood, just to mix things up a little?" "I don't know, Max" came the sleepy response. "Sounds like you're mixed up enough already." It was classic J. Earl. He is survived by his wife, Roma, his three sons - Jerry (Carol) and David (Kathi) of Brigham City and Val of Honolulu, Hawaii - a brother, Elwood, of Clinton and a sister, Jeannine, of Sunset. He is preceded in death by four brothers, Leon, James, Fred and Kent. The viewing will be Monday, May 13, from 6-8 p.m. at the Myers Mortuary, 5865 South 1900 West, in Roy.
