RAY OSBURN LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY - A. Ray Osburn, died on Tuesday, November 19, at Veteran s Administration Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky, as a result of heart disease and a recent stroke. He was 77. Before moving to Louisville in 1999, Ray lived in Brigham City and practiced patent law in Ogden, Utah, where he ran a branch office for Mallinkrodt and Mallinkrodt, a Salt Lake City firm. Previously, he was an engineer specializing in internal ballistics at Thiokol Chemical Corporation (now Morton Thiokol). Wanting to strike out on his own, and not wishing to commit himself to the just acquired Space Shuttle contract, he left Thiokol to study law at the University of Utah. The school awarded him a Juris Doctorate in 1976. Ray was predeceased by his wife, V. Joyce Osburn, who died on September 19, 1997. They were married on April 23, 1954, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was born Albert Ray Osburn in Sullivan, Indiana, on January 11, 1925, to Roscoe C. and Alice E. Osburn. He went by Ray, and as an adult preferred the initial A to Albert, for which he seems to have had a mild dislike. Ray was the youngest of three brothers, the others being Rudolph and Ronald. Although he was raised during the Great Depression, he accounted himself relatively lucky since his father, who died when Ray was only 17, made an acceptable living as a farmer and coal miner. He was graduated from the Sullivan school system with numerous honors and awards, including a plaque for 12 years of perfect attendance, with no absences or tardies on his record. In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, taking his basic training in Louisiana before fighting the Germans in the Battle of the Bulge. Captured behind enemy lines, he was a POW for five months, except for a brief period of escape, when several prisoners took flight out of the back door of a barn into which they had been herded. At the end of the war, he was one of several soldiers who made their way back to American lines when their captors dissolved in disarray. Honorably discharged in 1945, he attended Rose Polytechnic Institution on the G.I. Bill, where he received a Bachelor of Science degree, again with the highest distinction. After doing graduate work at Carnegie Institute, he embarked on a long career in engineering, living in several states and working for a variety of companies, including Boeing. His accomplishments included the design of bridges on the Indiana Turnpike and, while at Thiokol, significant contributions to the Minuteman missile and Apollo rocket programs. He was awarded at least one patent by Thiokol, and was an avid home inventor. In the early 1970 s, he marketed a water saving device known as Bobby Buoy, which was favorably reviewed in a study by the Environmental Protection Agency. His two brothers predeceased him. Surviving are his sons, Douglas R. Osburn of Louisville, Kentucky, and John P. Osburn of New York City. Friends and acquaintances are welcome at a graveside ceremony scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, and may pay their respects from 1:00 to 1:40 p.m. at Myers Mortuary, 205 South 100 East, in Brigham City.
