Conrad, known by family and friends as "Bea", died peacefully on October 13, 2003, following a valiant battle with cancer. She was lovingly attended by her family, many friends, and numerous committed health professionals at Ogden Regional Hospital. Bea was born in Ardmore, Oklahoma on March 1, 1926, to J.H. and Mary McKown and grew up in Oklahoma City. She graduated from Putnam City High School in 1944 and attended Oklahoma Baptist University where she met Bruce Conrad in her Junior year and married him on July 7, 1950. She completed her bachelor's degree in religious education at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary after Bea and Bruce moved to Fort Worth, Texas to allow Bruce to complete a master's degree in religious education. Following Bruce's graduation from seminary in 1953, the couple was appointed by the Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) to serve as career missionaries to Native Americans in Ponca City and at Chilocco Indian School near Newkirk, Oklahoma. Bruce served as pastor of Ponca Indian Church on the Ponca Indian reservation for nearly three years while also ministering to Native Americans at Chilocco Indian School. They accepted an assignment as missionaries to Native Americans at Intermountain Indian School in Brigham City, Utah in 1964 and served there until the school closed in 1984. While at Intermountain Indian School, Bea also worked as a mental health counselor in the school's mental health unit where she was honored as employee of the year in 1984. Bea and Bruce were among the longest tenured missionaries of the SBC with over 40 years of service. After Intermountain Indian School closed, Bea helped Bruce begin a new missionary work in Salt Lake City at Central Indian Church. This church was a multi-racial church with Native American, African American, Hispanic, Tongan, and Vietnamese members. Bruce served as pastor and Bea directed the ceramics program and a bible study for neighborhood children. They served at Central Indian Church until their retirement in 1998. During her nearly 50 years in Utah, Bea held a number of positions with the Utah-Idaho Convention of the SBC. Bea was the first director of the Young Women's Association of the Utah-Idaho Convention and then held numerous positions in the G.A.'s (Girls in Action), Acteens, and the Women's Missionary Union for both the Utah-Idaho convention and the convention's Golden Spike Association. From 1984 to 1999, Bea was the director of the WMU for the Utah-Idaho convention. In the last two years of her life, Bea assisted with the ceramics program of "Teen Thing", a teen outreach program in Ogden, Utah. She was a prolific writer authoring many articles for WMU and SBC publications. Bea was also an accomplished public speaker and spoke in churches throughout Utah and Idaho. These are the facts of her life, but they don't begin to tell the real story of her life and the influence she had on countless numbers of people she met. To us, her children, we learned the value of diversity and of accepting people no matter their racial or economic background. As young children, we grew up with Creek, Choctaw, Sac and Fox, Ponca, Seminole, Sioux, Navajo and many other Native Americans. One of our earliest memories is of a Seminole family of about 15 members who stayed in our home for two weeks while they attended the graduation of their son from Chilocco Indian School. We attended the Indian session of Falls Creek Baptist Assembly every summer in Oklahoma. Our vacations were often connected with our parent's participation in or direction of summer programs for various Southern Baptist encampments. We came to accept that visitors were a normal part of our family life and we never knew who would join us for dinners or stay in our home at any time. Our mother taught us the importance of dignity and respect for minority cultures, particularly Native Americans. From our mother, we learned that helping people was far more important than any material possessions. Several members of the nursing staff at Ogden Regional Hospital commented on the strength and beauty of our family. We have our mother to thank for that. Our love for her is boundless and our admiration of her immense. During the last three years of her life, we learned another valuable lesson. Following our father's stroke, our mother was his primary caregiver. She faithfully attended to our father and she always placed his care and well being ahead of her own needs, including her own health. While hospitalized these past ten weeks, mother constantly asked about our father and wanted to make sure he was okay and properly cared for. We brought our dad to the hospital for many visits and we observed firsthand their deep love for one another. Mother taught us the importance of selflessly ministering to others. Her shining example will always be with us. Bea is survived by her husband of over 53 years, Bruce, and their four children: Victor and his fianc‚e Melissa, Ramona and her husband Marlin, Tim and his wife Kerry, and John. In addition, Bea is survived by her sister, Mary Jo Puttroff (Oklahoma City), and a brother, Bruce McKown (Norman, Oklahoma). She is also survived by her eight grandchildren: Brian Conrad, Sarah Conrad Lewis and her husband Dan, Anna Conrad, Paul Conrad, Adam Conrad, Jared Conrad, Jenna Conrad, and Julia Conrad. Finally, Bea is survived by several nieces and nephews. Please join us at First Baptist Church in Brigham City, Utah on Friday, October 17, at 2 p.m. as we celebrate her life and our love for her. Following the funeral, you are also invited to attend a brief graveside service at the Brigham City Cemetery.
