She was born August 23, 1913, in Honeyville, Utah, a daughter of Elijah and Betty Beulah Sasser Hunsaker. She spent her youth in Honeyville and all of her married life in Riverside, Utah. Lola married Howard L. Capener on June 17, 1936, in the Logan LDS Temple. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in the primary for over 35 years and held other church callings. She was a devoted wife and mother to six children. She is survived by her husband, Howard; her children: Gordon L. Capener, Riverside; LaPriel (Cyril) Welch, Brigham City; Eldon (Jean) Capener, Riverdale; Betty (David) Rich, Syracuse; Neil (LuAnn) Capener, and Lynn (Sheila) Capener of Riverside; 25 grandchildren and 48 great grandchildren. Also surviving is her beloved twin sister, Zola Hunsaker, Garland; one brother Reed S. Hunsaker, Honeyville; and sisters-in-law Vera Hunsaker, Salt Lake and Ruth Tolman, Honeyville. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brothers, Orvil E. and Raymond D. Hunsaker. The family wishes to give sincere thanks to IHC Hospice and home care. She was born August 14, 1920, in Wellsville, Utah, a daughter of Peter Maughan Williamson and Cora Hendry Williamson. Coral married Wallace Elmer Johanson on May 1, 1939, in the Logan LDS Temple. She was preceded in death by her husband Wallace, daughters, Janice Hyde Poppleton and Kayleen Johanson and grandson, Dustin Hyde. Coral was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and held various positions in her life. She retired from the Defense Depot in Ogden. Coral is survived by her children: Coralee (D.R.) Norr, Tremonton, UT; Dean Johanson, Ennis, MT; DeeAnn (Mac) Beare, Las Vegas, NV; Gayleen Johanson, Sandy, UT; Kevin Johanson, Draper, UT; 14 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. HAWKES BRIGHAM CITY Dean Wayne Hawkes, 79, passed away Sunday, March 7, 2004, peacefully at his home. Dean was born on February 23, 1925, in Brigham City, Utah, a son of Mirle M. and Estella Pulsipher Hawkes. He served in the Marine Corps in WWII and in the Korean War. Dean married Geraldine Steffen on February 12, 1953, in the Logan LDS Temple. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a High Priest and had served in various callings. After retiring from teaching in the Box Elder School District for 33 years, he worked at the Brigham City Post Office as a custodian. He was preceded in death by his, parents; son, Robert Arthur; brothers, Bill and Marcus; in-laws, Arthur G. and Juanita Steffen. CHARLES ROBERT MUNNS, DDS Former Brigham City resident Charles Robert Munns, 69, died March 4, 2004, at Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, CA., surrounded by family and friends. Dr. Munns was born March 19, 1935, in Brigham City, UT, to Charles A. and Rowena (Reese) Munns. He graduated from Box Elder High School where he participated in many school activities. Dr. Munns graduated with a BS degree from Utah State University and went on to graduate from Northwestern University Dental School in Illinois with a DDS. He served in the U.S. Air forces in Kentucky and completed his military service in Anchorage, AK where he chose to stay and start his own dental practice. He remained in Alaska for 13 years. Dr. Munns had an accident in 1972 that left him with quadriplegia. He later moved to Southern California where he worked for the Veterans Administration teaching preventive dentistry; while there, he worked to further the advances for disabled people. Dr. Munns married Claudia Gourley in 1954. They were later divorced. They have four children which were raised in Alaska. He was a loving father and friend, avid outdoors man, mountain climber, pilot, and photographer. To all who knew him, his optimistic outlook, positive attitude and wonderful sense of humor were an inspiration. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dr. Munns is survived by his daughter, Lindsey Jensen of Wasilla, AK; son, Marc Munns of Salt Lake City, UT; son and daughter-in-law, Jon and Jessica Munns of Portland, OR; daughter and son-in-law, Jessica Munns and Robert Blaylock of Seattle, WA; grandchildren: Steven, Travis, Kyle and Laryssa Jensen of Wasilla, AK; sister and brother-in-law, Ellen Mae and Melvin Manning of Kaysville, UT; sister and brother-in-law, Gene and Wayne Rich of Logan, UT; Abby and Leo Munns of Newport Beach, CA. and numerous nieces and nephews. He was born on July 15, 1983, in Logan, Utah, a son to Mark DeWayne Moreland and Josephine Garza. Cody liked rap music, cliff diving, and snowboarding. He was a loving son and loved to hang around with his friends. The family would like to thank the nurses on the ICS that made him feel special. PATRICIA (PAT) ROBINSON FRESTON N. Patricia (Pat) Robinson Freston passed from this life on February 28, 2004. Born in Brigham City, Utah on July 2, 1939, the daughter of Lawrence Tolman Robinson and Norma Josephine Wight. After spending her youth in Brigham City, Pat attended Weber State University where she received a Bachelors Degree in English. She also received a MA Degree in English from Utah State University, a MS Degree in education from the University of Texas and a PhD in industrial psychology from the University of Utah. Pat's never ending passion for learning, teaching and sharing with others continued throughout her life. Dr. Freston served as Vice President, Human Resources at NPS Pharmaceuticals, Inc. from March 1997 to November 2003. Before joining NPS in 1997, Dr. Freston was Manager of Personnel Services at Questar Corporation. From 1977 to 1980, Dr. Freston was the Assistant Director of Training for Mountain Fuel Supply, a subsidiary of Questar. From 1971 to 1977, she was the Director of Academic Programming for the Division of Continuing Education, University of Utah. Pat was active in the community, and served on the Board of Trustees for IHC Health Plans, the Board of Directors for the University of Utah Alumni Associations, and the Board of Directors for the Cancer Wellness House. Dr. Freston received the Athena Award for Business Woman of the Year in 1991. Pat possessed a keen wit and a vibrant sense of humor. She was a passionate and veracious reader interested in a wide variety of topics and always open to new ideas. Her life was an example and inspiration to everyone who knew her; her wisdom cast her in the role of trusted mentor to one and all, while her beautiful smile reflected the warmth and kindness of her heart. Pat had a deep sense of nature and the land around her, which was demonstrated by the enjoyment she received when working in the peach orchard and gardens that she created. Pat's ability to beautify people and places was truly an amazing gift to those who knew her. Pat also took great pride and enjoyment in her family, constantly gathering them around her to share her worldly experiences and appreciation for culture. Her love for all people was exemplified through the many friends and acquaintances who have expressed their appreciation, love and gratitude. Pat is survived by her son Mitch Wade (Leslie); granddaughter Tawny Wade; grandson Ross Wade; two sisters, Jerry Velasquez (Archie), Debie Hauenstein (Dan); one brother, Joe Burgener (Dena); many nieces, nephews and endearing friends. THABEAL "MARGE" ANDERSON BRIGHAM CITY - Marge Anderson, 80, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2004, at the University of Utah Medical Center, resulting from injuries sustained in a car accident. She was born on April 24, 1923, in Elma, Washington, a daughter of Victor and Ragna Matilda Broton Knudsen. Marge married Howard "Andy" Anderson on October 7, 1944, in Aberdeen, Washington. From this union they have one son, Jerry Brian Anderson living in Logan, Utah. Marge worked at the Box Elder News Journal as a secretary and retired in 1985. She is survived by her husband, son and one brother, Robert (Jeanette) Knudsen of Elma, Washington. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and four brothers. You may email condolences to www.gilliespetersen.com. LAVELLE "BELLE" SHELBY LOGAN LaVelle "Belle" Shelby, 73, passed away March 13, 2004 at the Sunshine Terrace in the arms of her loving family. Belle was born on August 14, 1930 in Penrose, Utah to Charley Elmer and Anna Marguerite Andersen Petersen. She was the second of nine children. The family moved to Brigham City in June of 1936, where they lived until the summer of 1949, where upon they moved to Deweyville. During this time, the summers were spent at the dry farm in Promontory. As the oldest girl, she was a second mother to the younger children, and right hand man at the farm, filling in wherever needed. Belle was a good horsewoman and loved to ride her horse, Janey, including riding in the Peach Days Parade. Belle married Ralph H. Shelby on June 29, 1950. They were later divorced. They are the parents of three children. Belle worked for many years as a seamstress for Dunalle House in Brigham City. Belle had a great love for life. Her favorite things included fishing at Flaming Gorge, the summers spent at Bear Lake, and rock hunting with her sisters. She loved Coca-Cola, Elvis and the Utah Jazz. Belle is survived by her three children, Mike Shelby, Salt Lake City; Steve (Linda) Shelby, Brigham City; Teri (Malin) Glenn, Wellsville, and four grandchildren; Heather (Travis) Miles, Mark (Natalie) Glenn, Ivan and MacKenzie Glenn. Eight brothers and sisters; Jerry deceased (Norma) Peterson, Cincinnati, Ohio; Gay (Jay) Hansen, West Weber; Sue (Jim) Ferrara, Brigham City; Toni (Jim) Ririe, Deweyville; Richard (Sue) Petersen, Brigham City; John (Lana) Petersen, Salt Lake City; Linda (Mike) Behling, Rockville, UT; Judi (Scott-deceased) Berry Paradise. He was born August 13, 1913 in Salt Lake City, Utah, a son of Joseph Erastus and Grace Emma Hortin Jensen. He married Elna Clark on March 17, 1939 in Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death on March 18, 1998. He was an active member of the LDS church attending Brigham City First Ward. His career spanned 37 years as a Flyway Biologist with the Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife, US Fish and Wildlife Service. Prior to his retirement, he was cited for meritorious service by the Secretary of the Interior for the inception and development of the airboat. He is survived by two children, Maureen (Bruce) Smith of Alberta, Canada; Grant Clark (Naydeen) Jensen of Morgan Hill, California; six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Also surviving is one sister, Gweneth Hortin Trayner of Tucson, Arizona. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He enjoyed outdoor activities; notably, hunting, fishing, golfing, and snow skiing. Among his many talents were cabinet making and woodworking. MURIEL LOUISA TAYLOR BARKER BRIGHAM CITY - Muriel Louisa Barker was reunited with her eternal companion on Sunday, March 14, 2004. She was born February 29, 1924, in Salt Lake City, Utah, daughter of James Taylor and Leah Muriel Taylor. Muriel was educated and raised in California by her mother and stepfather Francis Marion Bunker. On October 15, 1942, she married Dr. Floyd Nielson Barker in the Salt Lake Temple. Muriel was a wonderful help to Dr. Barker in his medical practice for over 20 years. She had a beautiful singing voice and sang often at church functions and funerals and was the church chorister for Sunday school and choir leader for 18 years. With her ability to sing, she had the opportunity to record a record. She loved traveling and was always ready at a drop of a hat to go anywhere, especially Yellowstone and Jackson Hole, WY. Muriel is survived by her three children and their spouses: Claudia Jean (Devern) Howard, Kearns; Linda Iva (Randy) Isaacson, Malad, ID; John Edward (Patty) Barker, Brigham City, Utah; two brothers and their spouses, Paul (Sue) Bunker, Costa Mesa, California and Robert (Mary) Bunker, Higley, Arizona; nine grandchildren and four step grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Floyd Barker; grandchildren, Michael John Barker and Billi Jo Memmott and both parents. JOHN PAUL (JACK) FRANCIS John Paul (Jack) Francis returned home to his Heavenly Father on Saturday March 20, 2004, in Brigham City, Utah. He was born August 27,1923, in Perry, UT, to William John and Emma Christensen Francis. He married Beulah Irene Anderson on November 20, 1944. Together they had three wonderful children: Bill, Renee, and Keven. Jack loved spending time outdoors. He loved hunting, collecting many rocks to cut, polish and make into beautiful jewelry for everyone. He also loved shooting/playing with his guns, and reading his guns/ammo magazines. He is survived by two sons, Bill (Joan) Francis of Smithfield, UT; Keven Francis of Brigham City, UT; one daughter, Renee Stone of Clinton, UT; twelve grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one brother, and one sister. He was preceded in death by his beautiful wife Beulah, and one brother. Jo was born June 19, 1921, to Joseph and Monica Michalek in Kewaunee, Wisconsin. She was a member of the Saint Henry's Catholic Church. She was a retired tax practitioner, and many of her client s became close friends. She enjoyed gaming and seeing her friend's in Nevada. Jo is survived by five children: MaryEllen and Wally Crease, Diane and Terry Russell, Bob and Sylvia Flegal, Jill and Mike Smith, and RuthAnn and Chet Worthing; 16 grandchildren and great grandchildren too. She reunited with her husband of 48 years Alden E. Flegal, daughter Monie Videto, son Randy Flegal (twin brother to RuthAnn) and her granddaughter Holly. Diana was born December 11, 1942 in Brigham City, Utah to Kenton Leslie and Ruth Stokes Jensen. She grew up and attended school in Brigham City. Diana married Gary Hammerland on August 28, 1959. They were later divorced. She worked for Hamilton Drug, Thiokol and for nearly 20 years at Smith's Food and Drug. She was a devoted employee and loved working and associating with the public. For the last few years she enjoyed spending time at the Brigham City Senior Center, where she was recently named volunteer of the month. Diana spent her time crocheting, making ceramics and doing other handiwork. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, sister and friend. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy. Diana was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an extraction worker at the time of her death. In the past she served as a nursery leader and Sunbeam teacher. She was a devoted visiting teacher. She is survived by her children, Jan (Canyon) Anderson; Lance (Sue Zan) Hammerland; Margaret (Derek) Evans all of Bountiful; a sister, Grace (Brent) Hill, Alpine and 12 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her father, mother and a brother, Steve Jensen whom we are certain joyfully welcomed her home. "Together Again" LAURA THELMA PACKER BRIGHAM CITY Laura Thelma Olsen Packer, 89, passed away Wednesday, March 17, 2004 in Brigham City. She was born on November 8, 1914 in Holbrook, Idaho a daughter of Andrew Anderson and Harriet Ann Wickham Olsen. Thelma married Joseph Earl Packer on February 7, 1934 in Brigham City, Utah. The marriage was solemnized in the Los Angeles Temple in 1958. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she had worked in the Jr. Sunday School. Thelma loved camping, working in her yard, cooking for family and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one son, one daughter, four grandchildren, two brothers and five sisters. Surviving are her daughter, Janet and Doug Thomas, Brigham City; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Alvera White, Brigham City; and Ivy Lauritzen, Thatcher. Send condolences to the family at www.myers-mortuary.com KATHERINE MARY TIBBITTS BUCK TREMONTON - Katherine Mary Tibbitts Buck, 90, passed away on March 27, 2004, at the Bear River Valley Care Center in Tremonton, Utah. Kathie was born on October 23, 1913, in Providence, Utah, to Lorenzo E. and Clara Gessell Tibbitts. She was raised in the Rigby-Ririe area of Idaho and attended Rigby High School. Kathie married Joseph P. Buck in Ogden, Utah on August 5, 1933. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Idaho Falls Temple. During the war years, they lived in several states due to her husband's work with the government. They later settled in American Falls while Joseph worked at the Naval Ordinance Plant in Pocatello, Idaho. Joseph transferred to Thiokol and the family moved to Garland, Utah, in 1963. Kathie spent several years working as a waitress at Nel's Cafe in Garland. She had a talent working with crafts and enjoyed creating decorative items for friends and family. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting afghans for family and grandchildren, and she taught her art to many. In her aging years, Kathie worked in the extraction program of the LDS Church and was honored as the top extraction worker of the year. She is survived by her seven children: Keith (Sharon) Buck, Nadine (Leonard) Goertzen, Mary Ann (Robert) Broberg, Brent J. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; two sons Sidney Boyd Buck and Randall Lyle Buck; her parents; six brothers and six grandchildren. BLAINE DAVIS BARNARD PERRY, UTAH -Blaine Davis Barnard, 84, passed away on Wednesday, March 24, 2004, of Parkinson's disease at his home. Blaine was born February 3, 1920, in Ogden, Utah, the son of George Earl and Ruth Davis Barnard. He was the oldest child of five siblings. He along with his family resided in Perry. Blaine graduated from Box Elder High School and attended Weber State College. Blaine married his sweetheart, Virginia Constance Potter on May 2, 1953, in Salt Lake City, Utah. They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary last May. They have five children, Verlaine (Wayne) Rennemeyer, Brigham City, UT; Robert (Michele) Barnard, Scottsdale, AZ; Jill (Tim) Eull, Phoenix, AZ; Stephen (Theresa) Barnard, Cameron Park, CA; Betsy (Eddie) Brett, Taylorsville, UT. Blaine played the violin and loved playing his harmonicas. He also loved building and flying model airplanes as well as traveling and hunting. He was always proud of his work as a brick mason. He worked at the Brigham City Police Department for 22 years and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant, retiring in 1982. In 1979 he took flying lessons and became a licensed pilot enjoying flying for 10 years. He built and flew two experimental aircraft of his own. Blaine is survived by his wife, five children: 12 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Also surviving are two brothers, Paul Barnard, Perry; Ralph Barnard, Honolulu, Hawaii and one sister, JoAnn Thorstensen, Ogden. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother, Ray. In lieu of burial Blaine has requested donation to the University of Utah for the benefit of science. DELORES DICKSON WILLARD - Delores Marie Dickson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend to many, passed away March 27, 2004, after a courageous battle with cancer. Mom was born June 25, 1944, in Elko, Nevada, to Clara Salas and Joseph Gonzales. Mom married Kenneth L. Dickson September 29, 1965, in Elko, prior to becoming a resident of Willard, UT. Mom was a devoted wife and mother. Her generous spirit will live on in each of us. She was a member of the Willard Second Ward. Mom is survived by her husband of 38 years; one daughter and four sons: Lori, Tim, Mitch and Wesley Dickson; five grandchildren; and one great grandchild. Mom had an exceptional love for life and family. Her granddaughter Brandy was truly her pride and joy. Mom was preceded in death by her son Jim; sister Josephine; and her parents. CHRISTENSEN March 9, 1935 - March 4, 2004 John Sherwin Christensen, 68, died Thursday, March 4, at his home in Sandy, Oregon. A funeral was held Wednesday, March 10, at the Sandy, Oregon, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Burial was at Willamette National Cemetery. He was born March 9, 1935, in Brigham City, Utah, to John and Bertha Christensen. He was raised and educated in Brigham City, Utah. On November 23, 1957, he married Trudi Heriford-Higgins in Vancouver, WA. They lived in Vancouver until 1958, when they moved back to Utah. On December 17, 1963, their marriage was sealed in the LDS Temple in Logan, Utah. In 1967, they moved to Tillamook and then to Portland in 1976. They moved to their home in Sandy in 1984. In 1953 he joined the US Navy and served during the Korean War. He completed his high school education in the service. Following this discharge, he attended Clark Community College in Vancouver, WA., for two years. He worked as a diesel mechanic for the city of Portland until his retirement. His sister, Mernus Hunsaker, died in 1973. Survivors include his wife, Trudi of Sandy; son, Otis Christensen of Sandy; brothers, Wayne Christensen of Alexandria, VA., and Noal Christensen of Duncanville, TX; sister, Viola Johnson of Garden Grove, CA; and three grandchildren. Sandy funeral home is handling the arrangements. KATHLEEN BIGGS CHESHIRE SANDY, UTAH - Our beloved Kathleen Marjory Barnett Biggs Cheshire, passed away Thursday, March 18, 2004. She was born August 4, 1931, in Ogden, Utah, to Ornal George and Marguerite Faulkner Barnett. Kathleen was educated in Ogden, Utah and was a graduate of Ogden High School. She married William Ned Biggs on October 20, 1953. They are the parents of three daughters: Rebecca, Shelley, and Allyson. They were later divorced. Kathleen married Bill Cheshire on September 1, 1978. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Bountiful LDS Temple. Kathleen cherished her membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she faithfully served in the auxiliaries and as an organist. Kathleen was an accomplished and noted pianist. She shared her talent and love of beautiful music with audiences and hundreds of students. She inspired her children and grandchildren to develop their talents in music and the arts. Kathleen developed deep and lasting friendships wherever she lived. She dearly loved her friends. Her family and extended family were most precious to her. Her zest for life, her style, her forgiving nature, her grace, will be forever in our hearts. Surviving are her husband, Bill, Salt Lake City; daughters: Rebecca (Sherman) Conger, Logan; Shelley (Michael) Austin, Garland, UT; Allyson (Steven) Meredith, Salt Lake City; three stepsons: Kim, Kevin and Kelly Cheshire; 12 grandchildren: Nathan, Ryan (Holly), Joel, Emma, Jonathan, James Conger, Dayna (Matthew) Young, Daniel Austin, Alyssa, Matthew, Cameron, Tessa Meredith; and one great granddaughter, Lydia Conger. Also surviving are one sister, Cherie Moore, Reno, NV; and her aunt, Louise Smith, Ogden. PETERSEN BRIGHAM CITY - Our beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, Sidney Bruce Petersen, passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, March 30, 2004. He had been surrounded by the family that loved and honored him. Sid was born in Penrose, Utah, October 28, 1911, the son of John Carl and Effie Bruce Petersen. He lived most of his 92 years in Brigham City. As a youth he worked at Browning Ranch in Promontory riding fences and breaking wild mustangs. He later worked for a CC camp and served in the National Guard. Sid married Phyrl Smith on October 10, 1941. They had five children together. Sid made his living as a brick mason working all over northern Utah and southern Idaho. The homes and businesses he built stand as monuments to his hard work and integrity. Generations of families will live, love, laugh, cry, grow, and change within the walls erected with his skilled hands. Sid was a well-known figure in Brigham City. He was a friend to everyone and was able to offer help to many through the years. He walked the streets of town daily, often stopping to talk and reminisce with old friends and to meet new ones. He was a skilled listener and a wise observer of people. He loved playing pool, making things, working in his yard, watching the Jazz, and spending time with his grandchildren. He traveled the world with his wife and brought back delightful stories of people he met. Sid was preceded in death by his siblings: Luetta, Ryman, Robert Lynn, Leo, Ellis, Stan and Don, one daughter, Brenda Liggett and one granddaughter, Jodi Bessinger. He is survived by his wife, Phyrl; sons, Stan (Jana) Petersen, Bruce (LaVina) Petersen; daughters, Lynda (Neil) Bessinger and Marlene (Carlos) Martinez; son-in-law, Tom Liggett; as well as 12 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.
