Ruby Johnson BRIGHAM CITY Ruby Johnson returned to the loving arms of her father and husband Sunday, January 30, 2004. She was born in West Weber September 5, 1919, to Edwin George and Sarah Phillips Fronk, the fifth of seven children. The tragic death of her father in 1924 had a profound affect on Ruby for the rest of her long life. She grew up in Ogden, attending and graduating from Ogden High. Her first job was with the Ogden Standard. Her sister, Vera, and her sister's boyfriend, Jim Perkins, lined Mom up with a blind date to go to a dance. The date stood her up, but she went with Vera and Jim anyway. At the dance, they pointed out to her the boy who stood her up. She marched up to him, he a foot taller than she, punched him in the stomach, turned, and walked away. In that moment Dad fell in love, and the rest is history. How not, when she looked so darned cute marching away with that little pigeon-toed stride. Besides that, she was a looker. Mom married Lee Brant Johnson in Salt Lake City, March 5, 1941. He died January 31, 1973, and she never quite forgave him for that. He loved her very much. Mom was an artist. Her ceramics are legendary for the beauty and delicacy of the faces she painted on the figures, and the wild colors on her old world Santas. She did Japanese Bunka embroidery, and when she wasn't satisfied with the way the patterns were set out, she changed them. Her sense of color and texture was wonderful, although none of us could convince her that her favorite particular shade of turquoise was really bad. She produced blood, sweat, and tears afghans by the dozen. She never had much materially speaking, but she had imagination and a stock of pure inventiveness. She also had a really hot '72 Camaro and a lead foot. She had a bad temper, a generous heart, and could hold a grudge with the tenacity of a bulldog. She helped her children and grandchildren often and with good will and hated it when she had to rely on their help and care. She loved her husband, and hated him, and loved him. She hated living with her father-in-law, and cared for him in his last years like a daughter. She was a mass of contradictions, and no matter what else, she was our mother. Mom was preceded in death by her parents; her baby daughter Harriet, brothers, Eddy and Chet Fronk; sisters, Vera Perkins, Elveda Dallof, and Phyllis Tomaselli. She is survived by sons, Lee (Mary Lou) Johnson, Portland, OR; Kent Johnson, Brigham City; daughters, Carolyn (Dean) Rock, Tremonton; Betty (Rusty) Marcus, Janet (Rex) Lowe, Brigham City; Kriss (Jack) Edwards, Smithfield; and Missy/Colleen (John) Fonnesbeck, Brigham City; her brother, Elwood (Kathryn) Fronk; brother-in-law, Renzo Tomaselli; sister-in-law, LaVon Fronk. She has 19 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, February 3, at 1 p.m. at Myers Mortuary Chapel, 205 South 100 East, Brigham City. Friends may call on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. and on Thursday from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment will be in the Brigham City Cemetery.
