She was born February 15, 1920 in Fillmore to Edward and Evelyn Brunson Peterson. Helen married her first husband, Robert Champion, who died while serving our country during World War II. She later married Ward Roy Starley March 31, 1946. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on November 24, 1987. Helen wasn't a stranger to hard work. She spent much of her time at home working on the farm. After many years of farming, she and Ward decided to open their own restaurant, the Fillmore Caf‚. She served faithfully in the church in many capacities. She served a full time mission at Cove Fort. She was Second Counselor in the Relief Society in the Fillmore 2nd Ward. Helen also served as the Primary President in the Flowell branch. Her musical ability allowed her the opportunity to serve by playing the piano at Relief Society meetings held at the Fillmore Hospital for members of her church who were bedridden. She was also a member of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. Helen had many talents and hobbies. She spent much of her time crocheting and making quilts. Many of her summers were spent at the race track, racing horses. Helen was also a devout Utah Jazz fan. She even kept stats on her notepad at home for a few of the Jazz players. Most of all, Helen's greatest ho! bby was spending time with her family. She is survived by her children, Keryl Ann (Drue) Labrum of Meadow, Robert Lee (Linda) Champion of South Jordan, Jay (Tamara) Starley of Sandy; sisters, Vernell (Stan) Martin of Kearns, Colleen Davies of Fillmore, Edith (John) Cummings of Kanosh, LaVon (Larry) Riggs of Kearns; brother, Carl (Ivy) Peterson of Fillmore. She is also survived by twenty grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; five great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Helen is preceded in death by her parents, husbands, son, Phillip Starley, two brothers, two sisters, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. Funeral services will be held Thursday, August 28, 2003 at 12:00 p.m. at the Fillmore Second Ward LDS Church. A visitation will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. prior to the funeral service. Interment will be in the Fillmore City Cemetery. Arrangements under the direction of Olpin Southern Utah Mortuary, Fillmore. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune on 8/26/2003.
