She was born April 24, 1934 in Fillmore, Utah to Victor and Helen Bennett Peterson. Her parents moved to Salt Lake City where she attended school and graduated from East High. She graduated from BYU with a major in bacteriology and a minor in chemistry. While there, she met Dean Thompson. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple June 1, 1956, which was her graduation day. She worked at the laboratory at St. Benedict's Hospital and was Head of Hematology. She was known for her dedication to quality and often reminded her coworkers to "run the controls." She was a life-long church worker and served in every auxiliary. Her main love was the Young Women's program where she served most of her adult life in almost every position. She loved to do activities with the girls, especially camping. She also loved backpacking, and her many experiences included crossing the Grand Canyon and hiking the Inca Trail in the Peruvian Andes. JoAnn and Dean lived in Lima, Peru for three years where she worked in the counseling office at Colegio Franklin D. Roosevelt. Later they lived in China for two years where she taught English to university students. She loved to travel, and she particularly enjoyed her visits to primitive cultures in Kenya and New Guinea. Her greatest love, however, was raising her four daughters and watching the development of her grandchildren. They will miss her. She is survived by her husband of Roy and four daughters: DeAnn (Scott) Jones of Providence; Elaine (Jeff) Jones of Gilbert, Arizona; Eileen (Joel) Frederiksen of Roy; and Jodean (Adam) Child of Riverdale. She is also survived by a foster daughter, Nedra Pete, of Cedar City; a sister, Carol (ElDon) Frampton, of Sandy; and 16 grandchildren. She was preceded in death by an infant son, Mark Alan Thompson. The family would like to give special thanks to the care givers at Hospice for Utah for their kindness.
