Some lessen the dark, giving protection to all those around them from the night. Others illuminate life's steps. A few are the very "light at the end of the tunnel," answering needs with hope, courage and life's possibilities. These special lights never go out. Their reflections are endless, imbuing each new heir with the power to be successful and fulfilled. Gail Benjamin was all of these. She was born January 14, 1951 in Queens, New York and passed away December 4, 2004 after a heroic three-year battle with breast cancer. Gail befriended coworkers and students around the country as she worked with college admission staffs to become positive, life-changing forces in the lives of their students. She was a mentor, a model, but most of all a devoted friend giving of her time and talents to make a difference through education to benefit tens of thousands. At the time of her death, Gail was a Vice-President of Admissions for Corinthian Colleges, a group of some 130 colleges. Gail's mission in life, to promote the growth and happiness of those around her, did not stop in the classroom. With and through her husband, Arthur, she was active in the community advancing such causes as Career College Foundation, Image Reborn, LA Film School Foundation, No More Homeless Pets, Pasadena Pops Symphony, Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, The American Heart Association Walk-A-Thon, The American Lung Association Night With The Stars, The Butterfly Effect Foundation, The Hugh O'Brien Youth Organization, Unity, Utah Workforce Services, Wasatch Humane Society, and Women Beyond Cancer. In honor of the unrelenting work she and Arthur had performed to make the Living Planet Aquarium a reality at the Gateway Mall, on May 21, 2004 the aquarium was named in her honor, the Gail Benjamin Aquarium Experience. Memories make of us much of who we are and having a bright light like Gail in one's life dispels the gloom and gives hope for a brighter future. Her light will continue to illuminate untold numbers, as well as all of her family. She is survived by her husband, Arthur; son, Joey (Lindsey); grandchildren, Savannah and Zachary; mother, Betty Lorber and brother, Saul (Harriet) Lorber. Gail was preceded in death by her father, Murray Lorber. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, December 8, in the LDS chapel at 9880 S. 3100 E. at 3:00 p.m. Interment will be at the Granite Cemetery, 2985 E. 9800 S. Haight, Ruby Olson Ruby Olson Haight 1910 ~ 2004 Ruby Olson Haight, loving, gracious and devoted wife to the late Elder David B. Haight of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2004, of causes incident to age. Born in Fairview, Utah, on April 28, 1910, Sister Haight was 94 years of age. Sister Haight was the youngest of 11 children born to Peter and Christena Maria Larsen Olson. All have preceded her in death. Her graciousness to everyone, combined with a sweet spirit of kindness and love, left a lasting impression on all who knew her. Elder and Sister Haight provided an exemplary marriage during their almost 74 years together. It could be characterized as one of those old-fashioned romances where there was a twinkle in each other's eyes and a holding of hands on every occasion where they were together. Their lengthy marriage represented a historical record for any apostle during this dispensation. One could not be around Sister Haight without being uplifted and feeling a spirit of the Savior in her presence. Sister Haight and her dear husband, David, lived a rather remarkable and exciting life. Her father died when she was one, and at age eight the family moved from Fairview, Utah to Salt Lake City. She was a classmate at LDS High School with Gordon B. Hinckley, who later became President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elder Haight met his future wife at a school dance while she was attending the University of Utah. The courtship proved to be a bit of a challenge for Elder Haight, since other young men were also seeking her hand. But David persevered, and their life together became legendary. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 4, 1930, and honeymooned at Lake Tahoe shortly thereafter. It was during this trip in their new 1929 Model A Ford where Elder Haight often commented on speeding across the desert at 100 miles an hour --- 30 miles straight ahead and 70 miles an hour up and down. The Haights lived in Utah and Illinois before settling in Palo Alto, California, where Sister Haight assisted her husband in the hardware business. He served concurrently as Mayor of the City, as well as Palo Alto Stake President. Later they moved to Utah when Elder Haight was called to be an Assistant to the Quorum of the Twelve in 1970 and as an Apostle in 1976. Sister Haight was always at her husband's side but nevertheless was a powerful influence for good to not only her three children, but her 18 grandchildren and 78 great-grandchildren. They all adored her. She served in many ward and stake callings, including membership on the Primary General Board. Sister Haight is survived by her two sons: David Bruce, Jr. (Angela) and Robert Peter (Dorothy), one daughter, Karen Christena Huntsman (Jon). Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 9, at 1:00 p.m. at the Salt Lake Monument Park Stake Center, 1320 Wasatch Dr, Salt Lake City, Utah. There will be no viewing before the services. Interment will take place immediately thereafter at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, beside her beloved David. Arrangements are under the direction of Larkin Mortuary, 260 E. South Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah. The family wishes to express their love and gratitude to Carmela Ghersi for her tender love in caring for mother and father during these last two years. If there was a karaoke machine nearby, Ron was sure to have control of the microphone and entertained everyone with his great voice. Ron and I were married on May 24, 2000 in Bountiful, Utah. He was the husband that every woman dreams of having kind, loving, compassionate and caring, to say the least. It was not uncommon for my single girlfriends to bring their dates by for Ron to meet and obtain his feedback often referred to as Ron's Stamp of approval before moving forward. Madsen, Faye Averett Haymond Faye Averett Haymond Madsen 1911 ~ 2004 Faye Averett Haymond Madsen was born 27 October 1911 in Springville, Utah, the second of seven children born to Birt Ruel Averett and Grace Wignall. Faye passed away gracefully on 4 December 2004 in San Diego, California. She lived in Springville most all of her life. She graduated from Springville High School in 1930, and then graduated from BYU in 1932 with a two-year Normal Degree in Elementary Education. She married Paul M. Haymond on 14 September 1933. She later married Ivan Madsen on 11 November 1966. She was preceded in death by her husbands, and by her sisters, Mabel Simkins (Ray) and Norma Child (Hardy), and by her brother Blaine Averett (Pat). Faye is survived by brothers, Ronald Averett (Artha) of Reno, NV; Gene Averett (Clara) of Springville, UT; and Dean Averett (Norma Jean) of Hurricane, UT; and by all of her children: Phillip M. Haymond (Carol) of Baltimore, MD; David R. Haymond (Joan) of Provo, UT; Paula Faye Myres (Keith) of San Diego, CA; Maryan Pennington (David) of Billings, MT; John Creed Haymond of Salt Lake City, UT; William Bradley Haymond (Becky) of Corvallis, OR, and step-daughter, LesLee Standifird (Vance) of American Fork, UT. She was also the proud grandmother of 43 grandchildren, 120 great-grand-children, and two great-great grand-sons. You don't have to live to be 93 to be recognized as remarkable. Faye was remarkable at each stage of her life. She inherited her father's intellectual curiosity, leading her to drive the family Model-A delivery truck to BYU campus daily, loaded with all who could hang on. She had an endless thirst for reading and learning, and was quick to accept and master each new advancement in technology. Her influence for good among her family and friends is infinite; she quietly and lovingly taught each to love reading, to participate in and love the Church, to get excited about writing their family histories, and to be good citizens. She emulated her parents' tradition of enjoying "family get-togethers" and hosted a majority of them throughout her life. Grandma Faye will be dearly missed here, but we visualize her organizing family get-togethers with her beloved family on the other side of the veil.
