Connell, Edward Joseph (Bud) Edward Joseph (Bud) Connell 1920 ~ 2004 A successful, talented businessman, father, grandfather and husband passed away on Dec. 12, 2004 at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah. Edward (Bud) Joseph Connell was born on November 14, 1920 in Tooele, Utah to Ellen ("Nellie") Devine and Patrick Edward Connell. Bud was the oldest of two children and the only son of an Irish mother and father. He grew up in a section of Tooele where the Greeks, Italians, and Irish lived. At that time, it was called "New Town" and living in it taught him how to fend for himself. Bud met his high school sweetheart, Faye Johnson while attending Tooele High School in 1937. For Bud, it was love at first sight and he privately told a friend that he would marry her the first time he laid eyes on her. His statement proved true and they were married for 62 years. Bud graduated from Tooele High School in 1939 and began training as a draftsman for Tooele City. He enrolled at Utah State University in 1940 and was a student there at the time of the attack on Pearl Harbor. At the beginning of World War II, Bud decided to become a pilot. But, during an enlistment physical, the doctor discovered a punctured eardrum and this prevented him from enlisting. His punctured eardrum probably saved his life because each friend who became a pilot was shot down. After his eardrum healed, Bud enlisted in the Navy in January of 1943 and, before shipping off, he married. Bud was a Ship Fitter First Class, FS1, (Petty Officer First Class) on the Amecius (ARL2) Repair Ship. He was in charge of anywhere from 20-40 sailors while supervising metal repair of damaged ships. FS1 Connell ensured the ships were ready for battle. When "General Quarters" sounded, FS1 Connell was a Loader for the 3" gun battery shooting down enemy aircraft. His ship was often under heavy attack in the South Pacific and he often thought that death was eminent. His unit received the Navy Unit Commendation for meritorious action in World War II. Bud was present in the Philippines at the much-publicized return of General McArthur. At the war's end, FS1 Connell returned home and enrolled at University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science, and History with a teaching certificate in 1950. In 1950, Bud was activated during the Korean Conflict. He was assigned to a Headquarters Ship on a fleet serving in the Mediterranean. He was awarded his former rank of FS1 and served for 18 months. At the war's end, he continued his education, receiving a Master's Degree in Public Administration from Cornell University in 1954. After serving in World War II and the Korean Conflict, Bud began his work in public service which continued for 20 years. Bud worked as an Assistant City Manager in Tooele, Utah; Cleveland Heights, Ohio; and Rocky River, Ohio. He was a City Manager in Niagara Falls, New York; Provo, Utah; and North Miami, Florida. He left the public sector in 1972 and returned to Utah. Continued on next column Published in the Deseret News on 12/14/2004. Fife, Breck D. Breck D. Fife 1963 ~ 2004 Breck D. Breck had many other surrogate sons throughout his football coaching career. Reno, Haloti and Victor were just a few of the many he blessed. Breck coached High School Football for 15 years. He played High School and College Football and needless to say he truly loved the game. Breck had many hobbies and interests and was good at all of them, but his biggest interest was his family and friends. His favorite activity was to cook a big Sunday dinner for the family and spend the day together. We know he is with his Heavenly Father right now, they were good friends and spoke often. He will be missed by so many. He changed the lives of everyone he knew and those he didn't know with a crack of a joke or a big dimpled smile. He was that kind of person. Quint, Bruce Bruce Quint 1945 ~ 2004 Bruce Quint died Saturday in an avalanche doing what he loved doing best---being in the mountains. This Renaissance man with his Ph.D. in psychology and his seven sports letters from college lived his life to the fullest-savoring it with his love of life and people. There is no question Bruce touched everyone he knew---from his family, his closest friends, and even strangers. His "five-year plan" for life was to live as if every moment might be the last -- and he did just that. For the last 15 years, Bruce has been the executive director of the Community Development Corporation of Utah, expanding it and providing services to those most in need of housing. He was innovative, risk-taking, and extremely caring in his work to provide the very best to those he was helping. Bruce loved his golfing buddies so much and so looked forward to taking his mulligans with them. He was a terrific competitor in tennis and helped his team go to regionals. He was a great skier loving the beauty of Snowbird and the mountains. A voracious reader of everything, especially biographies, he could talk at length, and he usually did. He was an avid hiker and mountain biker. There wasn't anything Bruce did halfway, and he put his all into everything he did. He was a poet, a writer, and there was nothing he wouldn't try that involved athletics or academics. A true Renaissance man in every aspect. Bruce absolutely adored his eight grandchildren, and Pop Pop will miss them so much. He was so proud of his sons Scott (Denise), Chet, and Keith (Liz) and stepdaughter Michelle (Frank) Montagnino. His brother David (Laine) will miss the competition and camaraderie. His wife Terri will miss him the most. A special celebration of his extraordinary life will be at the main Salt Lake City Library Auditorium on 500 South on Wednesday, 11:30 a.m. 1:00 p.m. Bring your "Bruce" stories, and everyone has one, so we can share and celebrate. Taylor, Merla Fay Campbell Donaldson Merla Fay Campbell Donaldson Taylor 1926 ~ 2004 With broken but grateful hearts, we announce the death of our beloved Merla Fay Campbell Donaldson Taylor. She died from complications due to a heart attack and a stroke on Dec. 11, 2004. Fay was born June 19, 1926, in Tropic, Utah, the first child of Merlin and Manila Campbell. She was a beautiful person inside and out, and lived her life with a compassion and energy matched by few. She packed a lot of life into 78 years, but her greatest accomplishment was her family. She began her life taking care of other people, and it continued even into her final moments, which were filled with concern for her children and husband. As a young woman, she worked at the Tooele Army Depot, where she met and married Fred Leon Donaldson in 1944. They had four children to whom Fay devoted herself. When her husband died 15 years later in a car-train accident, she worked and raised those children when single parenthood was far less common. Eight years later, she met and married Maj. Thomas J. Taylor, who embraced not just his true love, Fay, but her children, who became his own. They had another son to bring the brood to five. Tom and Fay moved to California in 1967 where they made their home and many, many friends. She worked for the Sixth Army Safety Office at the Presidio of San Francisco. Then she spent many years raising her children, and went back to work when her youngest son was in school. She retired from R.W. Zant in 1996 at the age of 70. She leaves us far too soon but with happy hearts to have known her, and to be near her was to know a love like no other. She is survived by her loving husband Tom, Los Angeles, Calif.; Her sons: Daniel F. and Jeanne Donaldson, Soldotna, Alaska; James A. Taylor, Angels Camp, Calif.; Her daughters: Kathy A. and Ray Johnson, Sugar Land, Texas; Stacey K. Beach, Lafayette, Calif. Daughter-in-law Lynn Donaldson, Phoenix, Arizona; Her brothers: Ralph and Sandra Campbell, Hurricane, Utah; Albert and Doris Campbell, Layton, Utah; Mavin and Karen Campbell, Layton, Utah; Her sister Mavis and J.R. Madsen, Springdale, Utah. She also leaves 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grand-children, who were the crowning jewel of her life. She is preceded in death by her son Fredrick Ralph Donaldson, her parents and brother, Gaylon Kay Campbell. Services for Fay will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Glendale Chapel, 1130 W. Wilson Ave. A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until 10:45 a.m. She'll be buried in military cemetery in California.
