Born August 30, 1917 to Mary Elizabeth Harding and Albert Marcellus Burdick in Payson, Utah, "A True Lady" is how her family, friends and mere acquaintances referred to her. She grew up happily and carefree in Payson where her mother ran the Strawberry Boarding House and her father and brothers ran Burdick Lumber. Blanche attended the Peteetneet School then went on to "the BYU." Her mother, widowed when Blanche was 16, decided that they should move to Salt Lake City where Blanche then attended the U of U. There she met and married George T. Hansen, Jr. They were married on December 12, 1941. Blanche's proudest accomplishments were her three children, George (Pete), Mark and Elizabeth. She was a kind and nurturing mother who loved life and fought to stay on this earth as long as she could. Besides her love for her family, Blanche loved to socialize and was known to strike up a conversation with anyone she happened to meet. She also loved playing bridge with her close friends and, until suffering a stroke in 2004, belonged to two bridge groups. Blanche made the best of every situation in which she was placed. Zenger, Shirley Means Shirley Means Zenger 1931 ~ 2005 A very special spirit returned to her Heavenly Father on Tuesday, December 6, 2005, surrounded by her loving family, after a courageous fight with cancer. Shirley Ann Means Zenger was born January 29, 1931 in Los Angeles, California to Royal Webster Means and Lillian Livingston Means. Shirley graduated from West High School and married Kenneth Don Zenger on March 5, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. Shirley devoted her entire life and energy to her children and grandchildren, and her life was a true and classic example of a mother's deep, unwavering love. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored her warmth and loved her grilled cheese sandwiches and waffles, which she made, on request, hundreds of times. Shirley established many family traditions. One of her favorites was visiting the Temple grounds every Easter for family pictures. Christmas Eve was also very special, thanks to her warm-hearted festive love. She was a shopaholic when it came to her grandchildren and never failed to find some Christmas trinket every year to bring the joy of Christmas to a new level! Her home in Holladay was and will continue to always be open. Home was the center of family activities, especially the Sunday dinners when everyone showed up, including all of her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even their closest friends. Shirley welcomed everyone with open arms and acceptance. Shirley's generosity and kindness to all will be a legend forever. Besides serving her family, travels to Hawaii were one of her great sources of pleasure and enjoyment. In addition, her visits to Europe and cruise trips left her with many memories that she often recalled with pleasure. Shirley had a talent for making friends and giving a sense of comfort to those in her presence. Besides caring for her family, she would often take care of others in need, including people who were complete strangers. She regularly visited thrift and bargain stores to obtain shoes, clothing, and coats, which she distributed to needy children at various schools in the Salt Lake Valley. Compassion cannot even begin to describe the level of service and caring of this amazing woman. Everyone who met Shirley loved her warm smile and her easy conversational manner. Even in the latter stages of her battle with cancer, Shirley made a point to make it to her early morning swim session at the Holladay Lion's Club. Her friends at the swimming pool were captivated by her warmth and concern for every one of them--although her condition was much worse than most others that came each morning. Shirley so loved flowers, especially red roses! She took great care and concern in her gardening to ensure that the flowers had more than sufficient water. Her almost personal relationship with flowers was of a childlike nature. She had an awe and respect for the beautiful earth upon which she lived. She was the anchor of her family. Shirley so loved life; she was truly an angel on this earth. Shirley was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Shirley is survived by her loving husband Ken, and nine of her 10 children whom she continually had a mother-to-child relationship with: Greg, Lana Jeremy, Kim Mark (Jaime), Diane (Frank) Moffat, Merrilee (Clay) Wilson, Darrin (Katie), Jill (Bruce) Dalebout, Shauna (Christopher) Quick, Justin (Libbie), and her beloved daughter-in-law, Joni. Shirley is preceded in her death by the passing of her most loving and handsome son, Kevin, in 1978. She is also survived by 32 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. We will deeply miss her love and devotion. The family would like to extend a special thanks to everyone who assisted Shirley with her care and treatment. A viewing is scheduled on Friday, December 9, 2005 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 South Highland Drive and one hour prior to services on Saturday. Services are scheduled at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, December 10, 2005 at the Holladay 11th Ward, 2065 East 4675 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84117. Interment - Wasatch Lawn, 3401 South Highland Drive. We would like to give a tribute to our father/grandfather who so kindly cared for his "little flower Shirley Ann" during her five-year struggle with cancer. Ken was always by her side until the very end and could not have been a more devoted husband. Love, your children and grandchildren. Published in the Deseret News from 12/8/2005 - 12/10/2005.
