Aagard 1947 ~ 2005 Lance Charles Aagard passed quietly from this life to return to his Heavenly Father, whom he dearly loved, Feb. 8, 2005, at his home in Tooele, Ut. due to complications from surgery to remove a brain tumor. Lance was born January 26, 1947, in Tooele, UT, to James Conard and Lila Sylvia Richens Aagard. He grew up and attended Tooele schools, graduated from Snow College and BYU, and served an honorable LDS mission in the East Central States. On June 2, 1972, he married his best friend and soulmate, Mauna Phillips, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple. Together they raised four wonderful children whom he loved deeply and was so proud of. He loved being Grandpa to Sariah and Lance Joseph. Lance loved his Savior. He was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is a high priest in the Melchizedek priesthood. He was employed by the Utah State Tax Commission and as a part-time UTA bus driver. Lance is survived by his wife, Mauna, his parents, mother-in-law, Shirley Bingham (who loved him as a son), children, Kimberly Aagard, Andrew (Kristy) Aagard, Vanessa (Brian) Lucas, Nathan (Katja) Aagard, and six brothers and sisters. The family will meet with friends at Tate Mortuary in Tooele from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 10th and on Friday, Feb. 11th, from 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. at the Westland Ward meetinghouse,1030 S. 900 W., Tooele, prior to the services which will start at 1 p.m. Published in the Deseret News on 2/10/2005. Aardema, Klaas Klaas Aardema "Papa" Klaas Aardema, our loving father and grandfather, passed away February 8, 2005 of natural causes. He was born February 27, 1910 in Leeuwarden, Holland. He married Grietje Hoekstra on March 12, 1932 in Holland. They immigrated to the United States in 1954 with five children and four suitcases. He loved going on his Wendover trips. Klaas is survived by his children, Alice (Ron) Armstrong, Simon (Kathy), Ann (Bill) Lamoreaux, Steve (Lynne), Stephanie (Robert) Smith; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife, Grietje; daughter, Sietske; 10 brothers and sisters; two grandchildren and son-in-law, John Russo. Graveside services will be Saturday, Feb. 12th, 12 noon at Redwood Memorial Cemetery, 6500 S. Redwood Road. A visitation will be held one hour prior to services in the mortuary. He has finally been released from his pain and confusion. Dan was born Oct. 8, 1936 to Delmar C. and Ellen McLaren Allred in Salt Lake City. Dan was a finish carpenter and a master of his trade. He worked in all phases of construction. Dan married the love of his life, Sue, on November 25, 1978. Dan is survived by his wife, Sue, Sandy, Utah; children, Larry and Sylvia Allred, West Jordan; Andrea and Rod Sorenson, Heber City; Joni Huffman, Eloy, Arizona; stepchildren, Dale Peterson, Sandy; Tammy and Jeff Brand, West Valley City; 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Tim) Hohman, Tooele; brother, Terry (Dee) Allred, Nipomo, California. Dan has a special relationship with his grandchildren, Alisha, Michael, Christina, Jessica, Charley, Jakie and Larry; his great-grand-children, Nathan, Canyon, and Alexi. He was born 30 Nov 1923 in Provo to Roy and Rosabell Lewis Andrews. He married his sweetheart, Mary Anne Wanlass on 2 Oct 1950 and they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple 10 Aug 1967. Bruce served in the Air Force during World War II, Korea, and Viet Nam. He served Utah State Corrections as a Dog Handler. He loved to fish. Survived by his wife, his daughter, Susan A. Ostergaard of Provo, son, David B. Andrews of Mesa, AZ , six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Preceded in death by two sisters. Brown, Evelyn Evelyn Brown 1954 ~ 2005 Evelyn, our dear wife, mother, sister and friend, slipped peacefully from mortality February 8, 2005 at her home in Elk Ridge, Utah with her eternal companion Chad at her side. Evelyn was born December 21, 1954 in Spanish Fork to Dean C. and Belle Smith. She was one of six daughters. She graduated from Spanish Fork High School and Weber State College. Chad and Evelyn were married for time and eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple April 11, 1980. She was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served faithfully in her many callings and loved to attend the temple. Evelyn touched many people's lives. She taught countless children over the 23 years she worked for the Nebo School District. Everyone loved "Mrs. Brown". She also taught hundreds of children how to swim. She was always teaching. She is survived by her husband Chad and her children Aaron (Andrea), Natalie, and Nikki all of Elk Ridge; sisters Belvadean of Ogden; Renae of Salem, Karla of Payson, Sheila of Springville; and Elaine of Franklin, Tennessee. Born June 5, 1920 in Manila, Utah to Lawrence Miner and Cora Augusta Warnick Atwood. She married her eternal companion of 65 years, Ross Clark Burgess, October 16, 1939 in the Salt Lake Temple. Erma was a loving compassionate woman who was an active member of the LDS Church. She served in many callings including Stake and Ward Relief Society President, Ward Primary President and Temple Worker. She was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Published in the Deseret News on 2/10/2005. Cordova Sr., Gerald Joseph Gerald Joseph Cordova Sr. 10/20/41 ~ 2/7/05 Gerald Joseph Cordova, Sr., passed away on February 5, 2005. He is now at peace. Gerald was born on October 20, 1941, in Trinidad, CO, to Adolph Cordova and Rumalda Cordova (Abeyta). He grew up in Rock Springs, WY, and Oceanside, CA, and was fine athlete who lettered and was MVP in many sports. His favorite sport was baseball, a sport in which he won a State Championship. He was also a talented musician and songwriter, who belonged to well-followed bands Los Gauchos, Fantasma and Los Versatales. Gerald was also known in the community as a director of youth recreation programs for Salt Lake County Parks and Recreation, a position he held for many years. Gerald loved spending time with his family. His children will always remember him playing guitar on Sundays while he penned endless pages of melodies. Dad will be especially missed by his oldest son, Gerald Jr., and his youngest daughter, Andrea, who loved to play music with him. Those who knew him well will remember Gerald for his love of sports, cars, music; his sharp intelligence, clever humor and good heart. Gerald is survived by his first wife, Ruby Fresques, and their children, Gerald Joseph Cordova, Jr., Los Angeles, CA; Heather Flash (Jeff), Salt Lake City, UT and grandchildren by their deceased son, David Cordova, Shanice and Sharissa Cordova. She was born Aug. 10, 1917, to Paul R. and Marie Smith Arentz in Ogden, Utah. Mary graduated from South High School. She married Jerimiah (Jerry) W. Crowley May 6, 1939. She was president of Catholic Women's League, Cathedral Altar Society, a member of Holy Cross Hospital Auxiliary and was the backbone of Crowley Insurance Agency where she worked over 35 years. Mary is survived by daughter, Rebecca Douglas and son, Stephen J. Crowley; also grandchildren, Sean Shepherd (Kathy) and Heidi (Peter) Decker and six great-grandchildren. Eastlyn, Walter Walter Eastlyn 1911 ~ 2005 Walter Eastlyn, age 93, passed away February 7, 2005 from incidents of age but with his wry sense of humor in place to the end. Born July 3, 1911 in Salt Lake City to Charles J. and Hannah Trulsson Eastlin, immigrants from Sweden who in 1894 settled in "Swede Town", an ethnic neighborhood in the northern part of the city. Walter was the youngest and the last surviving child of this hard-working family of 10 children - his passing brings to close this generation of a Swedish-American family who sought and grasped the American dream. Instead of finishing high school during those depression years, Walter took on various jobs to help generate income for the family, which enabled his remarkable characteristics for devotion to family, perseverance, integrity and an enviable work ethic. He held several jobs in his career including service station attendant/mechanic, distributor of auto parts and products, poultry processing and a plant manager for a popular ice cream manufacturer. He married M. Isabella Shepherd, July 11, 1936 in Evanston, Wyoming; their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. As an active member of the LDS church, he gave genuine service to both his God and his community. In 1992, he was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years. He is survived by his faithful dog Kita; son and daughter-in-law, Richard S. and Ann Miller Eastlyn; three grandsons, Rich, Erik and his wife Ruth, Ryan and his wife Emily and their two children Oskar and Hazel, all of Salt Lake City. In his final years, Walter received extraordinary love and personal care from his grandson Erik and Erik's wife Ruth, who together made his last years so worthwhile and joyful - thank you! Fowers 1951 ~ 2005 Our beloved brother, uncle and friend, John Mahlon Fowers, passed away peacefully on February 8, 2005 at his home in Orem, from complications of pneumonia and congestive heart failure. He was 54 years old. Johnnie was born January 15, 1951 to John Alfred and Amy McEwan Fowers in Provo, Utah. He grew up in Orem and lived his entire life in the same home. Although Johnnie was born with Down's Syndrome, he never let this slow him down or be an inconvenience. He had many hobbies, he enjoyed reading books and magazines, watching television, going for car rides, and he loved sports. Johnnie was always ready for a picnic, barbeque, or other family gathering - he was the life of the party. Johnnie never met a stranger; everyone was his friend and he spread happiness wherever he went. He truly loved life. Johnnie is survived by four siblings: Joyce Misdom, Lehi; Jim (Kathie) Fowers, American Fork; Dale (Doris) Fowers, Spanish Fork; Beth (Chris Harrison) Fowers, Orem; two nieces and two nephews, eight grand-nieces and grand-nephews, and many friends. His parents and a nephew preceded him in death. He passed away February 8, 2005, after a courageous battle with cancer. He graduated from the University of Utah. He served in the U.S. Army as an expert marksman. He pursued a career in health and fitness, where he became vice president of Health Industries. Married Ann Cecit in 1967, together they have four children. He was a tremendous source of love and inspiration to all who knew him. His greatest joy in life came from spending time with loved ones, especially his children and grandchildren. He had an amazing zest for life that was with him to the end. His balance of strength and kindness was an example to all. She was born April 30, 1932 in Panguitch to Richard Taylor and Martha Lenora Cameron Judd. She married Norman T. Henrie, September 17, 1952 in Fredonia, Arizona. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple. As a member of the LDS Church, Dora worked in the Primary for over 36 years and was also involved in other callings as well. She worked as a cosmetologist in Salt Lake City. She crocheted many afghans and has given over 200 of them away as presents to family and friends. She is survived by her husband, Norman, of Panguitch; children, Martha Ann (Robert L.) Leslie of Panguitch, N. Dale (Margaret) Henrie of West Jordan, Jeff "T.J." She was born in Provo, Utah on March 6, 1966 to Ted H. and Lorraine W. Pierce. She married Clifford E. Hunsaker in the Logan LDS Temple on Sept. 23, 1992. She was an active member of the LDS Church. She served in the presidencies of the Relief Society, Primary, and Young Women. Anita loved camping with her family, scrap-booking, reading, and visiting with friends. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Anita graduated from AFHS with honors. She graduated from Ricks and BYU with a BA Degree in Journalism. She worked as a newspaper editor in Phoenix, AZ then served a mission for the LDS Church in the PA Philadelphia Mission. She is survived by her husband, her children, Taylor, Timothy, Shareen, and Larissa, her parents and siblings, Mark (Elizabeth) Pierce, Heidi (Lance) Hatch, and Dale (Krista) Pierce. Daniel M. Hunter 1918 ~ 2005 Daniel M. Hunter (Dan), age 86, passed away while sleeping in his home on February 6, 2005. He remained active until his death, pursuing his passion of raising and caring for his horses at his Woods Cross, Utah ranch. Dan was born on February 17, 1918 in Woods Cross, Utah to Daniel and Almira Hunter. He was the second youngest in a family of five children. He graduated from Davis High School, and then attended the University of Utah. In 1941 he enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Normandy, North France and Rhineland campaigns of World War II. Reaching the rank of Master Sergeant, he was honorably discharged on October 3, 1945. On June 5, 1942 he married Verna Williams. Following his return from overseas duty they began their family and built their first home in Woods Cross, Utah. He later moved with his family to Bountiful, Utah where he and his recently deceased wife lived for over 40 years. Dan is survived by a sister, Clara Cook, his three children, Daniel, Gerald and Kathy (Calobeer); 11 grandchildren and two great-grand-children. A member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served in numerous positions during his life, including Bishop for the South Bountiful First Ward while living in Woods Cross, Utah. Dan will be remembered for his strong work ethic, exemplified throughout his life and instilled in his children. A rugged man, Dan was willing to fight for his causes and always held his head high in the face of adversity. He blessed the lives of his family and those who came to know him. Johnson, Jerry Brent Jerry Brent Johnson 12/21/60 ~ 02/08/05 The world lost a wonderful man Tuesday morning. Jerry Johnson of Park City, Utah died peacefully in his sleep by natural causes. Jerry, a young, vibrant father of three, will be terribly missed by his loving and devoted wife and children. Jerry worked hard and gave everything he could to his family. Jerry was a fun loving, warm man who laughed and laughed often. Jerry was born in Park City, Utah and was one of the few proud locals. He graduated from Park City High School in 1979, where he excelled in all sports, especially football. His children will remember their father for his hard work and many sacrifices. He willingly sacrificed so his children could pursue their many dreams. He was a proud father who loved watching his girls compete in gymnastics and his son follow in his footsteps playing football. Jerry will be remembered for his genuine love he had for people. Jerry would drop anything to help others complete their projects and never expect anything in return. Jerry felt very close to the people he worked with, for him they were an extension of his family. Jerry worked tirelessly in the construction business in addition to the winters spent working for the Canyons Ski Resort- he leaves behind many friends. His memory will remain alive in all of us who knew and loved him. Jerry is survived by his wife Sheryl Phillips-Johnson, and their three children, Madeleine Elizabeth, Calvin Louis, and Rebecca Emily. He was preceded in death by his parents Clarence E. Lin, Danny Danny Sui Sheng Lin 1949 ~ 2005 Danny passed away suddenly of a heart attack Sunday, Feb. 6, 2005. Danny was born in Canton, China, February 14, 1949 to Florence and Jimmy Lin. His father was one of the renowned Flying Tigers pilots for General Chenault during World War II and at that time, the family was forced to flee communist China and settle in Taiwan. In Taiwan, Danny joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in 1961. He came to the United States to study at BYU and received his Electrical Engineering Degree. Danny faithfully served an LDS mission to Hong Kong. He spoke both Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese fluently. On May 23, 1975, he married VaNae Lowe in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved to Mesa, AZ where he was an engineer for the Salt River project. Danny was always a great missionary. On two different occasions, he hosted thirty Chinese engineers from Beijing and gave each of them a Book of Mormon in Chinese. He later learned from the mission president in Hong Kong that these scriptures he had given to the engineers were being photo-copied and distributed in China. Danny and VaNae have three sons, Daniel, Paul, and Joseph. Also survived by three brothers, Norman (Helen) Lin, CA; Jeff (Vivian) Lin of Taipei, and Carl (Elaine) Lin, CA. Danny loved teaching. He was a master teacher and taught Seminary, Math, English, ESL, History and Special Education. He served on the high council for the Bonneville and BYU Stakes. He was adventurous and loved the outdoors and wanted to do everything all at once. He loved people and was never too busy to serve others. He always put the Lord and his family first. His unselfish example was an inspiration to his family and friends. He was faithful in every way to the end. Funeral will be 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12 in the Provo Slate Canyon 10th Ward, 1745 S. Mendenhall, Bessie Bessie Jane Reynolds Mendenhall 1902 ~ 2005 Our loving mother, Bessie Jane Reynolds Mendenhall peacefully passed away February 4, 2005. Bessie was born on September 2, 1902 to Jesse Oliver Reynolds and Ellen Maria Wheeler in Springville, Utah. She was the third of five children born into this family. She attended school in Springville Utah, and graduated from Springville High School as class valedictorian. She also attended Brigham Young University where she obtained a "normal certificate" to be a teacher. Bessie taught school for two years in the Washington School in Springville. Bessie married Vern Cornell Mendenhall on February 14, 1924 in the Salt Lake Temple. To them were born seven children: Dr. David (Linda) Mendenhall, Las Vegas, Nevada; Lucille (Kent) Huntsman, Springville, Utah; Dr. John (Pamela) Mendenhall, Payson, Utah; Mary (deceased) (Gayle) Aldred, St. George, Utah; Nida (Ardeen) Childs, Provo, Utah; Dr. Carma (Russell) Hales, Salt Lake City, Utah; Robert (deceased) (Maryann) Mendenhall, Granada Hills, California. She had 42 grandchildren, 129 great-grandchildren and 34 great-great-grandchildren. Her husband preceded her in death in 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Oliver Reynolds and Ellen Maria Wheeler Reynolds as well as her brothers Jack Oliver and Earl, and her sisters Birdella Bearnson and Mildred Jamison; two of her children: Robert Mendenhall and Mary Aldred; one grandchild Barbara Childs; and one great grandchild Daniel Childs also preceded her in death She was a devoted grandmother to her great posterity. She was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life holding many ward and stake callings. She loved good music and was active in all associated activities. She was one of the charter members of the Springville Musettes and served as ward organist for more than seventy five years in Springville and Las Vegas. Her late husband, Cornell Mendenhall, was a contractor and was very active in the Associated General Contractors of Utah and of Nevada. He also was a member of the National A.G.C. and as such, Bessie was active with him in these organizations. In 1953 she and her family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where her husband had established his business and she lived there from 1953 until 1996 when she moved back to Springville, Utah to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Kent and Lucille Huntsman, in the original house she had moved into with her husband upon their marriage 72 years earlier at 163 East 200 North Springville, Ut. She lived in Las Vegas for 43 years. During this time she served as ward Relief Society president and later, Stake Relief Society President for 11 years. She served several years as chairman of "Nevada Mother of the Year" and also served on the national committee. She had a great love and appreciation for beauty in all things and got great joy from her family and from flowers, having been an avid gardener all of her life. She loved her country and never missed voting. She looked for the good and the beautiful in all things. He married Mary Kane (later divorced) and had two children Stephen Francis and Amanda Janet. He married Susan Mitchell Dykstra on his 50th birthday 1991. Robert enjoyed bowling, playing basketball, working on arts and crafts, going to Mutual, listening to music and dancing. Most of all, he blessed our lives with his never-ending smile and his unconditional love. Having achieved that purpose, he has been reunited with his loving mother after only a brief separation. Peterson, Helene Joan Banta Helene Joan Banta Peterson 1928 ~ 2005 Helene Joan Banta Peterson died of lung cancer on Feb. 8, 2005 in her home in Salt Lake City Utah. Helene was born on April 23, 1928 in Garden City Long Island, NY to George Downs Banta Jr. and Helene Jensen Banta. She was raised on the Rolling Hills farm in Unadilla New York, along with her sister Jane and her three brothers, George, Rob and Dick. In 1949 she received a BS degree in Human Ecology from Cornell University and then did graduate studies at Western Reserve University in Ohio. In 1951 she received a Registered Dieticians certificate from University Hospitals of Cleveland where she worked for seven years. In 1956 she married Richard Erling (Pete) Peterson, who remained her loving and faithful husband until his death in 1992. Helene and Pete were the parents of six wonderful children, Susan Joan, Karen Lynn, Richard Erling (II), Jon Nels, Judith Helene, and James Lars. In 1970 Helene, Pete and their children moved to Salt Lake City Utah, which remained her home until her death. In Salt Lake City, Helene worked for 25 years as a registered dietician at LDS Hospital where she was instrumental in establishing the nutrition support group for patients receiving enteral nutrition. She was an active member of the St. Ambrose Parish of the Roman Catholic Church and she served as a Eucharistic minister and RCIA sponsor for many years. She loved to read and passed that love on to all her children. She enjoyed knitting, sewing, and quilting and was active in the Utah Quilt Guild following her retirement. Helen was a lover of nature and a member of Great Old Broads for Wilderness. Until her final illness, she could be frequently found hiking and camping in the mountains and deserts of the region. Her family would like to thank IHC Hospice along with many friends and neighbors for their aid, comfort and support in her final days. Her children give special thanks to their sister, Susan, who cared for her during her illness. He was born July 29, 1921 to William and Kome Souvall in Salt Lake City, Utah. He graduated from South High School in 1938 and then attended LDS Business College. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 with his brother, Sam. George attained the rank of Master Sgt. before graduating from Officer Candidate School and served in the Army until August 1948 having attained the rank of Captain. He then moved back to Salt Lake and joined Souvall Brothers wholesale business. George married Lois Mathews in September 1945 and their daughter Patricia was born in 1948. In 1956, they moved to Phoenix and started Arizona Sundries, a music distribution business, which merged with Alta Industries of Salt Lake City in 1970. George was a founding member of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers (NARM) and served as its president in 1977-1978. Lois passed away in August 1984. On February 8, 1986, George married Ann House, and they shared 19 happy years together. In later years, George ventured into the commercial real estate investment business with his brother Sam. He was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Phoenix and was highly respected by the parish. He has been an Archon in the Order of St. Andrew of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America for 20 years and was one of the original members of Leadership 100. He also served on the San Francisco Diocesan Board for six years. He was a holder of the" Medal of St. Paul" and the "Ellis Island Medal of Honor. George enjoyed traveling with Ann, taking four memorable trips to Europe and three great driving trips covering 30 states and Canada. He also enjoyed spending time in Coronado, California with his family. George was an active member of the following organizations and boards: Founding member of Alta Industries, Inc. and served as a board member, Foundation Board of Banner Health Hospitals, One of nine Founders and member of the 100 club of Phoenix, an organization supporting the families of law enforcement officers or fire fighters killed or injured in the line of duty. Fund raiser and contributor to the Phoenix based Pappas School for Homeless Children. George is survived by his wife, Ann; daughter, Patricia; granddaughter, Nicole; brothers, Sam (Mary), Pete (Mary) both of Salt Lake City; sister, Rita (John) Billinis of Salt Lake City; and sisters-in law, Toula Souvall of Salt Lake City; Bonna Mathews of Phoenix; many loving nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his first wife, Lois and brother, Andrew. The family appreciates the kind, gentle and highly professional care of the Phoenix based Mayo Clinic Hospital. He will always be remembered for his kindness, generosity, deep faith and quiet leadership contributing meaningfully to several charitable causes in his community. He was indeed highly respected by all who knew him. May his memory be eternal. LaVon (Bonnie) Bateman Stratton, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and friend passed away on February 6, 2005 when a golden heart stopped beating. Born March 4, 1924 in Alpine, Utah to William Allen Bateman and Sarah Russon, she moved with her family to Salt Lake nine days later. After graduating from South High School, she attended LDS Business College. She worked at Standard Oil Co. and in the office at Granite School District. She married Leo. N. Stratton Feb. 24, 1950 in the Salt Lake Temple. Their eternal marriage is truly a sweet love story. She was a woman of many artistic talents. She enjoyed sharing her dried flower arrangements with her family and many, many friends through the years. Her homemade candy was a special treat that she also loved sharing. Making and keeping friends was a rare trait that she possessed. Her loving gentleness and quick humor touched and enriched the lives of all those who were privileged to be in her midst. She radiated the life of her Savior - caring for others and giving years of service in various ward and Stake callings. She preferred teaching by quiet and gentle example. Her "I'm fine" answer regarding inquiries about how she was feeling characterized her always optimistic attitude. Her sweet, kind, loving spirit endeared her to all. She was faithful, determined, unwavering, and persevered to the very end. Though the last years of her journey were especially difficult, it is now time for her to rejoice! All is well! She is survived by adoring husband Leo, brother Joe (Dorothy) Bateman, and loving sister Belva Walkenhorst, son Scott (Shelley) of Santa Clarita, CA, son Shane (Jill) and daughter Heidi Stratton of Salt Lake. Swim 1948 ~ 2005 Gaylord Kingsley Swim, beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away Saturday, February 5, in Provo, Utah, of causes incident to brain cancer. He was born December 17, 1948, in Carmel, California, to H. Dudley and Katherine Merrill Swim. In 1966 he graduated from Carmel High School and entered Pomona College at Claremont, California. After his sophomore year, Gaylord transferred to Brigham Young University, where he investigated The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was baptized in August of 1968 at age 19. BYU and the Church played important roles throughout his life. He graduated from BYU in 1970 with a B.S. in Business Management, and served a mission for the Church in the Central German Mission (D sseldorf) from 1970 to 1972. Following his mission, he returned to BYU to pursue an M.A. in Political Science. On June 1, 1973, Gaylord married Lauralyn Bankhead in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they were blessed with five children. As a couple, they set an example of mutual devotion, service, and faith. Among other church assignments, Gaylord served as a bishop at BYU, and as a counselor in the Lakeridge North Stake presidency from 1996 until his passing. Most of Gaylord's professional career was spent managing investments. In 1984 he opened and managed a branch office for Dominick & Dominick. By 1989 he had established what would become Pillar Capital Advisors, which he led until his retirement in 2003. In addition to his investment management practice, he served on the boards of directors of EFI Electronics, Covey Leadership Center, and Eyring Research Institute, and established the Foundation for the American West, a community foundation. Gaylord spent much of his life engaged in civic affairs. In 1995 he founded the Sutherland Institute a Utah-focused public policy research organization. He also founded Rural Health Management Corporation, served as a trustee of Central Valley Medical Center, and was awarded Utah Hospital Trustee of the Year in 1993. He served on the boards of the State Policy Network, Deseret International Foundation, Enterprise Mentors, and the Utah National Parks Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He had a deep commitment to education, a commitment which spanned all age groups in both public and private sectors. He served as chairman of American Heritage Schools for more than a decade, working intently to introduce new curriculum as well as direct the design and construction of a new campus. In 2004, he chaired an ad hoc committee that studied a proposed division of Alpine School District. At the time of his death, he was a member of the President's Leadership Council at BYU and an advisory board member of the Foundation for American Christian Education. Regardless of the endeavor, his goals were always the same: foster faith, develop character, teach principles, promote accountability, build the community, and strengthen the family as the fundamental unit of society. Gaylord was preceded in death by his father, Dudley (1972), and mother, Katherine (2001). Born to Oscar and Nellie Dunn in Brigham City, Utah. Married Glen Holland in October 1929. He passed away July 20, 1962. Virginia married Raymond Teal in 1965. Ray passed away December 2002. Hers was a life of joy, fun, fishing, camping and simple pleasures that enriched everybody's lives. Torgersen, Gerald Wayne Gerald Wayne Torgersen 1943 ~ 2005 RICHFIELD, UTAH - Gerald Wayne Torgersen, 61, passed away Tuesday, February 8, 2005. He was born on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 1943 in Burbank, California, the second of four children born to Lynn and Darthell Torgersen. He is survived by his sisters, Mava (Newel) Huntsman of South Jordan; Janet (Brice) Curtis of Sigurd; and Collette (Richard) Tomlinson of South Jordan; and stepmother Orlene Chestnut Torgersen of Richfield. His mother, Darthell, died on December 31, 2002, and his father, Lynn, died on February 2, 2005. Gerald was born with "infantile glaucoma" blindness. At the age of 5, Gerald enrolled in the Utah School for the Deaf and the Blind in Ogden, Utah, where he lived in the dorms on campus until he graduated in May 1960. He moved home to attend public high school in Richfield for 10th -12th grades and graduated in 1963. He then attended BYU and graduated in 1970 with honors with a double major in psychology and sociology. Then one evening while walking to work, everything was taken away from him when he was struck by a car. He suffered severe injuries and had to relearn how to eat, walk, talk, dress, and care for himself. He lived with his parents in Sigurd from that time on, until 2003, when he moved to the Richfield Care Center. Gerald was an active member of the LDS Church and had a very strong testimony. He loved to serve the Lord and faced his life with optimism and cheerfulness. Funeral services will be held February 12, 2005, at 1:00 p.m. in the Sigurd LDS Ward Chapel. Tsubakihara, Sumi Matsukawa Sumi Matsukawa Tsubakihara 1912 ~ 2005 Sumi passed away January 31, 2005 in San Diego, CA. She was the daughter of Rijiro and Sui Matsukawa, born November 1, 1912 in Ogden, Utah and educated in Salt Lake City, a graduate of West High School. She is survived by husband George, son Kent, and Brother Dr. Shig Matsukawa; also many cousins, nephews, and nieces. Preceded by her parents, brothers Hichiro, Sam, Isamu, and Masuo, and Sister Utako. A memorial service will be held Saturday February 12 at 11:00 a.m. at the Japanese Church Of Christ. Published in the Deseret News on 2/10/2005. Watabe, Masao Masao Watabe 1914 ~ 2005 OREM, UT. - Masao Watabe passed away peacefully on February 6th at his home in Orem, Utah. Masao was born on June 6, 1914 in Keikanzan, Manchuria, China, the second son of Senji Watabe and Kon Takano. He graduated from college in Harbin, China with a major in Russian. His fluency in Chinese, Russian and his native tongue, Japanese, helped him secure a post in the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. On March 20, 1938 Masao married Hisako Watanabe. Masao's life changed dramatically after World War II when he met two LDS missionaries in Sendai, Japan. He was so inspired by the Joseph Smith story that he stayed up all night reading The Book of Mormon. In the gospel he found salvation not only for himself, but for all of his ancestors, his family and his friends who died in the War. He was the first person in Sendai to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served as a branch president there for several years. Later he was asked to become a full-time translator for the Church in English, a language he taught himself after he joined the Church. He served in various callings in the Church including branch president, district president, mission genealogy chairman and stake missionary. In 1972, he became the first patriarch in Asia when he was called to serve as patriarch for the Tokyo Stake. After he retired from his job as translator for the Church, he and his wife served several full-time missions including missions to the Hawaii Temple, the Tokyo Temple and the Taiwan Temple, where he served as the second counselor in the temple presidency. In 1990 Masao and Hisako moved permanently to Utah to be close to many of their children and grandchildren. While in Utah, Masao served as patriarch of the Asian branches at Brigham Young University where he gave patriarchal blessings to students in Chinese, Japanese and English. He was so grateful that he was able to give more than 1,700 patriarchal blessings during his tenure as patriarch. He also served as a sealer in the Hawaii Temple, the Tokyo temple and the Taiwan Temple, and as a temple worker in the Provo temple. He now rejoins his wife, Hisako, who passed away in 1996. They are survived by their four sons, Masahisa (Faith), Masaji (Claire), Masakazu (Rose) and Masasue (Junko), and two daughters, Seiko (Yoshiteru) Matsuura and Yasuko (Kazunori) Okano, 23 grandchildren, and 26 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005, at 2:00 p.m. in the Canyon View Stake Center, 575 E. 800 N. Orem. A viewing will be held in the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 E. 800 N. White Jr., Dr. E. Hartley Dr. E. Hartley White, Jr 1921 ~ 2005 Dr. E. Hartley White, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully at his home Monday, 7 Feb. 2005 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born to Dr. Edgar H. White and Lucy Jones White in Beaver, Utah 10 May 1921. He grew up in Tremonton, Utah and graduated from Bear River High. He attended the University of Utah where he played football on Ike Armstrong's team, and also Freshman Heavyweight Wrestling Champion at the U. He graduated from the School of Dentistry at the University of Missouri at Kansas City and practiced Oral Surgery in Salt Lake City for 38 years. At the time of World War II he and his high school sweetheart Margaret Ruth Manning were married at the mission home in Independence, Missouri 31 January 1944. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple 11 June 1945. They just celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. He served in the Navy during World War II and also in the Korean Conflict. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a long time member of the Capital Hill Ward where he served as Scout Master, Bishop's Counselor and also as a High Counselor in the Salt Lake Stake. He served, with his wife, in the Texas Dallas Mission and also as a Salt Lake Temple Ordinance Worker. He very much enjoyed his association through the years with friends in the "Bill Shea" golf group, golf being his favorite sport. He is survived by his wife and eight children: Kathryn (Barry) Miller, Huntington Beach, CA; Dennis M. (Sherry) White, Abilene, Texas; Ruth Ann White, Salt Lake; Elizabeth (Michael) Lefler, Farmington; Lucy (Corey) Ekins, Wellsville, Edgar H. (Debbie) White, Henry M. (Lisa) White of Salt Lake; Rebecca (Bryan) Geurts, Washington, D.C.; 32 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Jensen, Provo. He was preceded in death by two grandsons; Curtis Child and Navy Lt. Nathan D. White, Iraqi Freedom; his parents; and three brothers, Jones E. White, R. Wendell White, DDS, Hobart J. White, MD. Funeral services will be Saturday 12 February 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Capital Hill 2nd Ward located at 413 West Capital, Salt Lake.
