Ruth was born in Ogden, Utah, on August 14, 1918, to Thomas Clyde Greenwell and Sarah Lenora (Leah) Pardoe Greenwell. She attended Ogden High School, Weber College, and BYU, receiving a B.A. degree in Education in June 1940. She taught elementary school for two years. On August 25, 1941, she married Fredric Maurice Abbott in the Salt Lake Temple. During World Ward II, Ruth volunteered as a Nurses Aide, while Fred was serving in the U.S. Navy in Washington, D.C. In 1949, after Fred accepted a position with General Mills, the family move to Monterey Park, California, where they developed many lasting friendships. Ruth was actively involved in church activities and community service, again, making many dear and lasting friendships. In 1965, the family moved to the San Francisco Bay Area (Mountain View and Walnut Creek). Fred retired from General Mills in 1980, after which Fred and Ruth returned to their city of birth, Ogden, Utah. Ruth was a woman without guile, who will always be remembered for her compassion and sensitivity to the feelings of others. She was always for the underdog. Her children were amazed with how their mother maintained close contact with the numerous friends she and Fred had made over the years during their moves throughout the country. The hundreds of Christmas cards she would receive each December is legendary. All were welcome in her home, and no one left hungry. Her family could not have asked for a more loving and caring mother and Grammy. Ruth's grandchildren will always remember the fun Russian Rummy and Scrabble games with their Grammy. She cherished her friends from Chareya (service club), her bridge club, and her ceramics club. She will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her. Polly, Caroline Scorup Caroline Scorup Polly 1908 ~ 2005 A dear and gracious lady has passed from among us into a better world. On February 15, 2005, Caroline Scorup Polly died at age 96 of causes incident to old age. She was born on April 4, 1908 in Salina, Utah, her father's hometown. He had taken the family to Salina from their home in Bluff, Utah, so that this sixth child could be delivered by a doctor. But on the day Caroline was born, the doctor was out of town. And so, her father John Albert Scorup, a rancher who had delivered many a calf, delivered her himself with instructions from his wife Emma Theodora Bayles, who was a midwife, as well as a schoolteacher. Caroline was the youngest of six sisters, Edna Scorup Larsen, Veda Bayles Scorup Nelson Williams, Anna LaVerde Scorup Gurney, Juliette Scorup Ward, and Pearl Alberta Scorup Fairbourn, who all died before she did. Growing up to the age of nine in Bluff, Caroline saw there the last mustering of the U.S. Cavalry from Denver for an expected Indian uprising which never happened. Her family moved to Provo, so that all six sisters could graduate from BYU. Caroline chose to major in Dietetics and Business. While at BYU she met her sweetheart Orville Louis Polly, who became her chemistry lab instructor and husband. They married during the Great Depression on August 29, 1934 in the Salt Lake Temple and rode the bus for their honeymoon to Baltimore, Maryland, where Orville completed his Ph.D. Fortunately finding a job in the oil industry in Southern California, they settled in Long Beach, where they raised their family, Karen Elizabeth, Julie Ann and Kenneth Edward. Caroline and Orville made many wonderful friends and were active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For many years Caroline was the secretary-treasurer of the Relief Society women's organization of the church during the bazaar era. She also taught Primary, Mutual, Sunday School and was a faithful visiting teacher as long as she was able. When Orville died in 1971, Caroline followed through alone on their retirement plans to move back to Provo. The people of her neighborhood and Edgemont 8th, now the 11th Ward have been cherished friends. Caroline held her extended family together by keeping in touch. She always knew just what to bring each person she visited. She was a consummate Christmas elf. She crocheted numerous afghans for loved ones. She nurtured beautiful flowers. She loved to go galavanting in her car. And she delighted in tossing firecrackers on the Fourth of July. We who are left here will miss her greatly. Her son Ken passed away in 1991. Karen Polly Sandberg (Howard) and Julie Polly Snow (Jerry) survive her, along with eleven grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. We thank the people at Orem Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for their kind care of our beloved mother, grandmother and Aunt Caroline. The funeral will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at 12:00 noon in the Edgemont 11th Ward chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane (3050 N. 1250 E.) in Provo, Utah. Born September 12, 1916 in Panguitch, Utah, she was the youngest of Albert F. and Margaret Hatch Haycock's four children. They later moved to Salt Lake City where she graduated from East High School in 1934. On October 14, 1940, she married Harold M. Rex (of Randolph, Ut) in the Salt Lake Temple. Their home was blessed with five children. Government and service to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took their family to many parts of the world. As a young mother she and her husband presided over the Brazil Mission from 1945-1949. Harold worked for the US Foreign Service in Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, Paraguay, Libya, Trinidad, and Colombia. Diania was a wonderful hostess and friend to foreign dignitaries and many general authorities who visited. Life was not easy being so far from family and homeland. They were often the only LDS members in a country, holding church services in their home. Diania instilled in her children a love of the gospel of Jesus Christ and a deep appreciation for their American heritage and freedoms. After retiring in 1975, they returned to the US and their family, making St. George their home. In 1977 they accepted a mission call to serve in the Genealogical Society's extraction program. They traveled to New York, Central America, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Jamaica to secure permissions and oversee the microfilming of church and government records. They returned and built their first home in Bloomington in 1984. Living in impoverished parts of the world enhanced Diania's natural compassion for all people, and especially those less fortunate. She taught her family service and sacrifice as she volunteered in many settings such as hospitals, schools and libraries. In St. George she worked for eight years at the Chamber of Commerce and donated over 3,500 hours to the Dixie Regional Medical Center as a Pink Lady. An avid reader, she especially loved helping children and adults learn to read. A champion of good causes, her family first, she worked cheerfully and tirelessly for others. We know her joy continues. She is survived by her loving children: John (Deann) of St. George, Ut., Jeff (Joette Marie) of Escalante, Ut., Yara (Wayne) Selph of Salt Lake City, Ut., Judd (Cindy) of Yorba Linda, CA., and J.B. (Fran) of Leeds, Ut., 26 grandchildren, and 35 great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, husband, and one grandson. Instead of your having now to put together my obituary, consider letting me write it for you, as follows. I was born on March 29, 1928, to William H. and Gladys Barker Westwood, in Salt Lake City. I grew up there and after graduating from the University of Utah College of Law in 1952, practiced law there for a time, mostly while working half time and later full time for the State of Utah. That job led to my working for the U.S. Bureau of Public Roads in Washington, D.C. My last job of any consequence, it involved the collection and analysis of highway accident and travel data. In time, I left Washington to live again in Salt Lake City. I never married, living most of my life with my stepmother, Ruth Newman Westwood, in her home in Salt Lake City. There she gave me sustenance of every kind, sacrificing unstintingly in doing so yet avoiding being judgmental with me about my many shortcomings. That I didn't deserve what she did for me is a huge understatement. To each member of my family (both nuclear and extended) and to each of my friends: Thanks for the joy and richness you brought into my life and for being you. Carry on...and take care. Ralph is survived by mother, Ruth N. Westwood, sisters; Carol (Arnold) Angle, Sandy, UT., and JoAnn (Gale) Johnson, Grover, WY; brothers; Dale (Shirley) Westwood, Salt Lake City, and Richard Westwood, Cedar City, UT; and many nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by parents, sister Lucile (Carl) Weatherbee, nieces, Shauna Angle and Linda Weatherbee. Memorial services will Friday February 18, at 3:00 p.m. at the Wasatch Ward, 1750 South 1500 East. Inurnment, Wasatch Lawn Memorial Mausoleum 3401 South Highland Dr. Published in the Deseret News on 2/18/2005.
