Hill A Legacy of Optimism and Strength Louise Isabelle (Matthies) Hill died of natural causes December 29, 2004 in Salt Lake City. Her remarkable life was an example of faith, strength, endurance, beauty and patriotism. She blessed the lives of her family and friends for almost 93 years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dexter C. Hilll; as well as her two brothers Charles and Ken Matthies. She is survived by her son, Keith Hill, who was the light of her life; her daughter-in-law, Kristin (Nelson) Hill whom she treated as a daughter and a friend from the first meeting; and by Erick Hill, her cherished grandson. Louise also leaves her two extended families the Hills (Texas) and the Nelsons, (California) with whom she spent many wonderful, loving, happy times. She was born January 23, 1912 in Salt Lake City to John Matthies and Nellie Brewster Matthies, German and English immigrants. Although she traveled throughout the county, Utah was always first in her heart. She shared priceless memories of her childhood and youth with her family. She watched her father drive one of the first street cars in the city. She skated on the Liberty Park pond at Christmas time. She picked flowers and sold bouquets to her neighbors on Redondo Avenue. And one of her favorite memories was the smell of the cake her mother would bake every Saturday, for Sunday dinner which followed church. Louise's life changed forever the night she met Dex, a handsome young enlisted man from Texas. Their love affair lasted for more than 60 years. She was a model military wife and mother, moving her family across the county seven times and raising her son alone when her husband served his country on three separate tours of duty to Japan. She was a friend and hostess to hundreds of displaced service personnel. When a life passes that was well lived, it is difficult to find the right words. This was a woman who truly knew who she was. She leaves her family lessons of courage, as well as the importance of facing challenge with optimism, and meeting life head-on with humor and grace. Perhaps there is no better legacy for anyone. Funeral services will be Tuesday, January 4th at Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 Highland Drive at 11 a.m. Friends may call one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Air Force Enlisted Widows Foundation, 92 Sunset Lane, Shalimar, Florida 32579-1000. Published in the Deseret News from 1/2/2005 - 1/3/2005. Orton, Steven Frederick Steven Frederick Orton 1967 ~ 2004 Steven Frederick Orton passed away Friday, December 31, 2004 at his home. Steven was born on August 21, 1967 in Wheatridge, Colorado to Frederick and Beverly St. Clair Orton. From the very start of life, Steven had some physical problems. An operation for pyloric stenosis at one month at which time a heart defect was seen on x-ray. His first five months of life, he was given antibiotics and kept from contact with other outside of family to protect him from infections. Then a cardiac catherization was done to examine the heart defect, none was found. He had been healed through prayer and fasting of family and church members. However, he was found to have other developmental problems which were also present at birth. In later years, his diagnosis was called cerebral hypotonia, meaning that the nerves were present, but not functioning properly. He actually had a combination of syndromes including some autism. Over the years we had to wait and see how his life would unfold. His life was beautiful but an uncertain experience for his family. He was a very loving person, very accepting of whatever had come his way. He had a beautiful spirit inside him which touched all who came to know him. He attended special education schools until the age of 24 and then lived in a duplex home in Provo, Utah with others who needed special care. He worked with others and a supervisor cleaning offices, parks and United Way vans and gaining experience in community living skills. He loved music and enjoyed singing and dancing, Christmas, church (especially the organ and choir), his family and light-hearted comedy. He had a way of touching the lives of those around him. I'm sure he was here to help us all learn to love and care for one another. Steven is survived by his mother, Beverly, brothers, Douglas and David, and sisters, Deanne Johnson and Michelle Watkins. He was preceded in death by his father, Frederick. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 4, 2005 at 3:00 p.m. in the Cascade Chapel at Sundberg-Olpin Mortuary.
