Matheson Will Be Missed Max S. Matheson, former director of the chemistry division of Argonne National Laboratory in the Chicago area died Wednesday, January 26th, 2005 at his home in St. Louis, Missouri. He was 91. A native of McGill, Nevada, Max Matheson graduated from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City with a degree in Physical Chemistry. He pursued a masters degree from Brown University and received his doctorate from the University of Rochester, New York, under the guidance of his mentor, Dr. Albert Noyes, Jr. Max's career at Argonne began in 1950 and included stints as a research chemist, a senior scientist, and finally director of the chemistry division, retiring in 1978. During this time Max published numerous articles and books, spent a year in Paris at the Laboratoire de Chimie Physique under a Guggenhiem Fellowship, and was a visiting professor for a term at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem. As Director, he was- and has always been- deeply committed to supporting his fellow scientists in their research endeavors. Dan Meisel, Director of the Radiation Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, worked with Max for many years and said this of him... "In spite of his huge knowledge he was extremely modest. He was always giving first credit to his fellow colleagues, hiding his own contribution to the solution of a problem that could not be resolved without him. Even on scientific issues of deserved credits, which are often a source of contention among the practitioners... He was the ultimate liberal, tirelessly seeking justice for the weak. He never could find a fault in a socially "Iiberal" cause even at his own expense. 'A society as rich as ours should take care of its weak and poor and sick even if it means that I pay higher taxes' was a common motto..." He will be remembered for his dry humor laced with witty puns, his interest in art, his fervent desire to make a political point, his intense interest in theologies of the world, his quiet love for his family, and his desire to help his fellow man. He is survived by his children: Linda Matheson of Baltimore, Marc Matheson of Sacramento, and Jean Fornango of St. Louis; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; his brothers Robert and James and sister Margaret. Private funeral services will be held in St Louis. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Evergreen Park, Illinois. A memorial luncheon will be held on Tuesday, February 1, in Darien, IL.
