I'm following the path God laid for me. I took His hand when I heard Him call, I turned my back and left it all. I could not stay another day, To laugh, to love, to work or play. I found that peace at the close of day. If my parting has left a void, Then fill it with remembered joy. A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss. Ah, yes, these things I too will miss. Be not burdened with times of sorrow. I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow. My life's been full, I savored much, Good friends, good times, a loved one's touch. Perhaps my time seemed all too brief. Don't lengthen it now with undue grief. Lift up you heart and share with me. God wanted me now; He set me free. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Christ United Methodist Church, 2375 E. 3300 S, Salt Lake City UT 84109 in his name. As per his request there will be no services. Gray, Alvin Russell Alvin Russell Gray 1908 ~ 2005 Alvin Russell Gray, Professor Emeritus of Modern Languages at Snow College, passed away peacefully of natural causes June 25, 2005 at the Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful, Utah, nearly three months prior to his 97th birthday. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah 29 September 1908 to Ralph and Elizabeth Ruth Saunders Gray on his grandparent's "squatters land". He married Dorothy Peckham 22 February 1935 in the Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death in 1991. Six children were born of their union, which they raised in Ephraim, Utah except for several brief periods when Russell pursued graduate studies. After retirement in 1974, Russell and Dorothy lived in Ephraim, Utah for several years; then Yuma, Arizona; and finally Bountiful, Utah. Russell lived in Centerville, Utah following Dorothy's death. Russell's paternal and maternal grandparents were early Mormon pioneers who braved the hardships of early life in the Salt Lake Valley. He grew up amid his relatives in the sagebrush covered open hills known as the "East Bench" near the University of Utah and the Fort Douglas reservation. In this playground he walked every foot of ground on the East-Bench Dry Canyon, Red Butte, Emigration, Mill Creek, Parleys and Big Cotton Canyons. He spent his summers in Big Cottonwood Canyon helping his father in the mines. He was an accomplished fly fisherman and frequently fished the streams of Mill-D Flat near his father's mining cabin. He obtained the first nine grades of public education at the University of Utah Training School and later the Stuart Training School. He attended LDS High School and was on the tennis, basketball and football teams. During the 12th grade won the Salt Lake City High School tennis championship using a borrowed tennis racket. He commenced studies at the University of Utah in 1927, but interrupted his studies in 1928 to serve three years in the German-Austrian Mission for the LDS Church. Upon his return, he resumed studies at the U of U, receiving BA. and M.A. degrees in 1934 and 1936, respectively. Following graduation, he commenced a college teaching career at Snow College in Ephraim, Utah that spanned 38 years. During those years he became proficient in many languages, but mainly taught German, French, Spanish, and sometimes Latin, as well as other subjects such as History, Philosophy, Western Civilization, and English. He was recognized as being both versatile and a talented teacher. It was said of him in a tribute at a 1971 Snow College Alumni Banquet: "Mr. Gray is a lover of the cultured, the beautiful things in this life. He has a knowledge of art, of music, and of literature. One of the reasons he is such a successful teacher of a foreign language is because he knows the history, art, music and culture of the people who speak the language he teaches. He seems to remember everything he has learned and is able to recall it at the proper time." Russell was active in School, Church and Civic affairs. He served as the Chairman of Snow College's Lyceum Committee for many years and was a faculty representative on the Athletic Council, he taught adult Church classes and served in scouting, was a member of the Ephraim Public Library Board and the City Council. Russell supplemented his meager teaching income by building and renovating homes. He was an accomplished cement finisher, brick mason, carpenter, painter, and landscaper. Russell was preceded in death by his parents and five siblings: sisters Vera Ruth Paul, Hannah Leona Gray, Dorothy Mae Cundick, and Lilian Beth Christensen, and a brother Ralph Saunders Gray. He is survived by his six children: Russell L. (Joan Andersen) of Provo, UT; Robert C. (Mary Lou Bailey) of Foxfield, CO; Stephen R. (Elaine Wanlass) of Sandy, UT; Wayland E.( Maile Roberts) of Bakersfield, CA; Janet E. (Michael Kjar) of Centerville, UT; and Edward F.
