Wood 1918 ~ 2005 Evelyn Brown Wood, 86, died Saturday, Feb. 26, from injuries suffered in a fall at home two days earlier. A true daughter of Zion, Evelyn was dedicated to church and family her entire life, serving in many capacities in the LDS Church. She was born Dec. 11, 1918 in American Fork, Utah, a daughter of Ephraim Knowlton Hanks Brown and Zina Spratley Brown. Her mother died when she was 4 and her father remarried Laura Brown. She and her sister moved to Brigham City, Utah, to be with them when she was 7. She graduated from Box Elder High School June 1, 1938 and married Dean F. Wood. Evelyn and Dean, her husband of 67 years, were the parents of twin daughters, Judean and Geraldean, who were born in 1939; Judean died at 10 months. Later they had a daughter, Geneal and sons Willard and Scott. She was a homemaker most of her life and worked at Littons after her children were raised. Evelyn served as Primary president and in other church positions before she and Dean served a welfare mission to Liberty Stake in Salt Lake City. They served 12 years as temple workers in the Ogden and Bountiful temples. Evelyn was an excellent seamstress, gracious hostess, kept a fine house and was always willing to serve others. She and Dean spent many years hunting, fishing, and camping with friends and family mainly at Strawberry Reservoir. Bridge was big in her life, and she was part of a bridge club for more than 60 years. She is survived by daughters, Geraldean (Quane) Kenyon, Boise, Idaho; Geneal (John) Newman, Alpine, Ut; sons Willard (Tonya), Springville, Ut and Scott (Melissa), Rexburg, Idaho. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother, Knowlton, sister, Melva Brown and son-in-law, Glade Dunn. The family gives a special thanks to friends and neighbors. Thanks also are due to medical personnel at University of Utah Medical Center, Lakeview Hospital and Vista Care Hospice. Her grandchildren will forever remember grandma's house and her cookies. Bishop, David Clayton David Clayton Bishop 1921 ~ 2005 Our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle joined his beloved wife in the arms of our Heavenly Father on 24 February 2005. David Clayton Bishop was born 17 February 1921 in Hinckley, Utah to Don Taylor Bishop and Alice Tullis. Clayton served honorably in the North Central States Mission and following his return to Utah, he married his sweetheart, Mary Ethyl Meeks Bishop, in the Salt Lake Temple on 1 March 1944. During the first four years of their marriage, Clayton helped run the Meeks ranch in Wayne County and in 1948, the family moved to Orem, Utah, where he was employed at Geneva Steel. Clayton worked as a first helper in the Open Hearth and retired after 33 years of service. He was always proud to call himself a "steel man." Clayton was truly a renaissance man. He loved music and sang with the Mendelsohn Chorus for over 20 years. He was an avid reader and had a thirst for knowledge. His hobbies included carpentry, jewelry making, golf, fishing, hunting and watching BYU football and basketball. Most of all Clayton loved people. He was humorous and caring and there were few people whom he met that could not be tied in some way into his family tree. Clayton served faithfully in many church callings and had a profound love for his Savior. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Margaret Bishop Spears, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews, all whom he loved greatly. Buchanan 1908 ~ 2005 GUNNISON, UTAH- Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Donald R. Buchanan, 96, of Gunnison, Utah, returned to the loving arms of his Heavenly Father February 26, 2005, in Gunnison. Don was born December 6, 1908, in Manti, Utah, to Raphael Simms and Margret May Braithwaite Buchanan. He made his home in the Gunnison Valley from the time his family moved to Centerfield in 1918. He married Julia Modeen on June 23, 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple. Don loved Gunnison Valley. It was his favorite place to be. He loved to plant a garden and raised his own vegetables every summer. He was a prominent businessman and owned the Gunnison drug store for many years. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, bowling and especially golf. He was dearly loved by his family and will be deeply missed. He is survived by his wife, Julia; daughter, JuLynne Buchanan, Salt Lake City; son, Scott (Brenda) Buchanan, Salt Lake City; grandsons, Jeremy Buchanan and Shaun (Lisa) Buchanan, Salt Lake City; three great-grandchildren; sister, Twyla Jensen, Gunnison; and a brother, Ray Buchanan, Casper, WY. Childers, Danny Danny Childers "Rebel Dan" Danny Ernest Childers returned home to our Heavenly Father February 26, 2005 from complications following surgery. He was born to John and Janean Childers on October 27, 1967 in SLC, UT. Danny was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he currently served as 1st counselor in the Elders Quorum. He married his best friend in October 1989 and was later sealed in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Christensen, Mable Smyth Mable Smyth Christensen 1911 ~ 2005 RICHFIELD, UTAH - Mable Smyth Christensen, 94, passed away peacefully in Richfield, Utah on February 23, 2005. She was born February 11, 1911 in Manti, Utah to Frederick Duncan Smyth and Mary Verona Cox. She married Rangwell Niels Christensen of Ephraim August 9th, 1940 in the Manti LDS Temple. The couple lived in North and South Dakota and Montana for 22 years before moving to Richfield, Utah in 1962. Mable received a BS in Elementary Education from Utah State University in 1965, and was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She retired from teaching in 1976. Mable was active in the LDS church, holding many Stake and Ward positions in Relief Society and Sunday School and worked for 10 years in the Danish Name Extraction Program. She served in various positions in the Richfield Culture Club (1992 Woman of the Year), the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers and Delta Kappa Gamma Professional Teacher's Society. She is survived by her children, Carl S. (Kathy) Christensen, of Oceanside, CA; Richard N. (Pamela) Christensen of Columbus, OH; Carol (Robert) Geddes of San Jose, CA and Betty (Kenneth) Roberts of Gig Harbor, WA; 18 grandchildren and 15 great- grandchildren; sister, Evelyn McNeill of Bluewater, New Mexico. She was preceded in death by her husband, Rangwell (March, 2000), sisters: Francis (Lester) Blackham, Alice (Lionel) King, Verona Beth Smyth, and Carol (Conrad) Keller. She was born April 25, 1912 in General Alvear, Argentina, the daughter of Luis and Mercedes Villalba. Married Pedro Rubino Colombi in Mendoza, Argentina. She was an active member of the LDS Church and provided pension room and board for many missionaries in Argentina who dearly loved her cooking and friendship. She loved to grow flowers and travel. Her pet bird, Chico, was her pride and joy. Survived by her daughter, Ana F. Porter and her husband David L. Porter of Bountiful, two grandsons, Lonnie and Andy and three great-grandchildren (Drew, Micah and Courtney). Preceded in death by her husband, Pedro and some of her brothers and sisters. He was born December 26, 1920 in Upland, California to Ralph and Lucille Zander Crossman. Married Elaine Thelma Cone in 1944. They had three children Ralph, John and Susan. Elaine passed away in 1973. Married Patricia Maree Casper in 1976 at Camp Pendleton, California. Joined the US Marine Corps Reserves in 1938. Called to active duty December 7, 1941 and served in three wars: World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He retired in 1967. He held an Extra Class Amateur Radio Licence with call sign K6HAV. He was a member of the Capitol Hill Kiwanis Club. He is survived by his wife Patricia, son Ralph Barrett Crossman II; three granddaughters: Charif Dianne Martin (Fred), Elaine Jovann Crossman and Samantha Ilea Crossman; three great grandchildren. Born December 14, 1911 in Hunter, a daughter of Thomas Jones and Maud Wolstenholme Evans; she was the middle of seven children. Married Fred Richard Fonger September 24, 1938 in Kaysville; he died May 8, 1994. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Beth was an active member of the LDS Church, where she served as a temple worker at the South Jordan LDS Temple. She was a proud Democrat and worked for many years in the Salt Lake Democratic Central Committee. Employed by Salt Lake County to head the Indigent Burial Program. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Utah State Training School and Utah Mental Retardation. Member of the DUP for many years. Beth enjoyed her work as a 4-H teacher; cooking was one of her favorites. You could often find her sitting out on the lawn during summer months. In earlier years, Beth was chosen Miss Hunter and took 1st place in violin competition. In 9th grade, she was asked to sing with her high school senior class at a special vocal competition at the University of Utah. Survived by children, Kathleen (Jay) Christopher, West Valley City, Richard (Shirley) Fonger, Ruth, NV, Robert (Denise) Fonger, Murray, Floyd Fonger, Provo; 10 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; brother, Rawlin J Evans. Hedin, Kenneth Weland Kenneth Weland Hedin 1928 ~ 2005 On Sunday, February 27, 2005, one of the Lord's noble and stalwart sons was called home after enduring 15 months of pancreatic cancer. Husband, father, grandpa, brother and friend, he will be deeply missed. We are comforted that he is now in the presence of our Savior and will be able to do what he has always loved doing which is serving others. Truly of him it can be said, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant." We have the sure knowledge that death is not the end and this period of separation is only temporary. Born March 30, 1928, to Wilhelm Gabriel Hedin and Mary Augusta Linnea Weijland in Salt Lake City, Utah. A graduate of South High School, he served an LDS mission to his ancestral homeland of Sweden. Married Jeanine Eleanor Bailey in the Salt Lake Temple on June 9, 1951. After graduating from the University of Utah, he proudly served his country in the Korean War as a military policeman. His love of children was evident while teaching school in the Granite School District for 33 years. He was loved and respected by students and faculty alike. He was also employed 60 years at the Deseret News and the Newspaper Agency Corporation. He had a strong, valiant testimony of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and held many Church callings in the Salt Lake Grant Stake including Bishop twice, Stake High Councilor, Stake Mission President, Stake Executive Secretary, High Priest Group Leader and dedicated temple worker. He was a friend to all he met and beloved by all who knew him. Dad was a loving husband and a devoted father, and was so proud of his family. He cherished spending time with them, such as camping in Southern Utah, target shooting, boating at Pineview and Lake Powell, relaxing at his cabin at Bear Lake, and ocean vacations to Bandon-by-the-Sea. His jovial laughter, fun yodel call, and good humor made every event memorable. Preceded in death by his parents. Survived by wife Jeanine, children Kenneth B., Kerry C. (Michele), Elisa (Brady) Sines, and Kevin B. (Debra). His deepest joy was his 14 grandchildren: Cory, Eric, Terra (David) Shepard, Ammon (currently serving an LDS mission in Uruguay), Austin, Taylie, Brendan, Emelia, Noble, Logan, Adam, Megan, Noah and Jonas. Kofoed, Alice Robinson "Ila" Alice "Ila" Robinson Kofoed 1928 ~ 2005 Alice "Ila" Robinson Kofoed, 76, died Feb. 27, 2005 as a result of colon cancer surrounded by her loving family. Ila was born Sept. 20, 1928 in Hilliard, Wyoming to William Theodore and Sarah Beatrice (Gibson) Roinson. On Feb. 20, 1950 she married Lynn Jensen Kofoed in the Logan Utah Temple. Ila was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many calling including, Young Womens president, Relief Society secretary, Nursery Leader, Primary teacher, and Primary president. Ila was an avid square dancing and was a member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers. She enjoyed sewing, family parties, and following grandkids in all activities. Ila was unselfish, a great teacher, and an example for good to all that knew her. She will be remembered for her positive attitude and her sense of humor. He was born April 10, 1967 in Provo, Utah to Charlotte Nielsen and Michael P. Lanphear. Mike loved spending time with his sons. He was a music enthusiast. He loved collecting records and memorabilia from earlier decades. He enjoyed making jewelry and toy models. In his past time he enjoyed the out doors and fishing was a passion he dreamt about often. He leaves behind his precious children Zachary, Gabriel and Elijah; hyis mother Charlotte Nielsen; step-father Jim Nielsen; sisters Jacklyn and Dale Mart, Jamie Nielsen and Mike Richards; niece Demi Mart; grandmother Athena Swasey; special friends Shanie and James Scott, and an extended family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Larsen, LaVerd LaVerd Griffin Larsen 1918 ~ 2005 LaVerd Griffin Larsen passed away peacefully February26, 2005, in Salt Lake City. LaVerd was born January 8, 1918, in Escalante, Utah, daughter of J. Edgar Griffin and Laura M. (Dolly) Lay. She was raised by her aunt, Nethella K. Griffin. She went to schools in Escalante and graduated from Bear River High School, Garland. LaVerd married Howard R. Larsen, September, 1935, in Panguitch. They lived in Salt Lake City, Mayfield, and finally settled in Gunnison. She was an original member of the Literary Club and loved her home and garden. LaVerd is survived by two daughters, Lois Ann Hubbard, Salt Lake City and Alayne L. Peterson, Washington D.C., four grandsons, John M. Hubbard (Brenda), Alan G. Peterson (Jodi), Brady H. Luna, Daniel Ray Swaner Daniel Ray Swaner Luna "Dan -The Man" On March 8,1981, we were blessed by the birth of our first son, grandson, brother and nephew Daniel Ray Swaner Luna. He died Feb. 25, 2005. Our hearts are saddened by this loss and a huge void has been left. Our sadness is superseded by the great joy, light, kindness and compassion that he shared with all who knew him. Daniel had an extraordinary talent and passion for music, acting and sports. He attended Cypress High School and won many awards for his acting abilities in musicals and plays. He was a born performer with a charismatic personality, charm and a great sense of humor. Daniel eagerly shared these gifts with everyone around him. He was a gentle soul with a big heart. Mamanakis, George Michael George Michael Mamanakis 1915 ~ 2005 MORGAN, UT - George Michael Mamanakis, 89, passed peacefully from this life on February 26, 2005, at his home surrounded by his family. George was born September 6, 1915 in Hanna, Wyoming to Michael and Artemisa Barboulakis Mamanakis. On July 24, 1943, he married Ellen Nelson, later solemnized in the Logan Temple. On January 7, 1945, while serving in the Solomon Islands, he was baptized a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. George was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy SeaBees. His company joined the First Marine Division in capturing and securing Okinawa Island. George was a heavy duty equipment specialist. After retiring from Civil Service, George dedicated the next 30 years serving his country as the top Naval Recruiter for the 11th and 12th Naval District. Throughout his years of dedicated service, he received various awards including the Naval Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. At the age of 62, George enrolled at Weber State College and three years later graduated with a degree in Gerontology and Photography. A lover of mechanics, he operated his own garage for many years. George also enjoyed camping, gardening, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, and photography. George leaves behind a family that loved him, he will be missed but not forgotten. He was an exceptional son, devoted husband, and caring father and grandfather. George is survived by his wife, Ellen of 62 years, three daughters and two sons: Linda ((John) Willerton, Elwood Mamanakis, Katie (Rob) Allred, Gary (Kandis) Mamanakis, and Carol (Glen) Mecham. His legacy also includes 19 grandchildren and 20 great-grand-children. George was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters, two brothers and two grandchildren. She was born March 17, 1923 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Harry and Martha Lawrence. She attended schools in Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School. She married Robert Patterson in the Salt Lake Temple on June 10, 1948 and built their first home in Alpine at that time. They lived shortly in American Fork and then moved back to Alpine and spent the rest of her life raising her eight children in Alpine. She was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all the days of her life and served in many callings including; Primary, Relief Society, and Scouting. She worked with her husband and children in the family construction company (Patterson Construction) as bookkeeper and advisor. She enjoyed being a mom and grandmother. She also enjoyed reading, cooking, crocheting, doing yard work, attending the temple, working on family history, serving and spending time with her husband, children and grandchildren. He was born April 24, 1929 in Murray, Utah, as the sixth of seven children, to Stanley Albert and Agness Fitzgerald Rasmussen. He married Linda Kay Jacobson (daughter of Sigurd and Julina Jacobson) in the Logan, LDS Temple on December 14, 1962. They were blessed with two children: Julie (Russell) Rhome of Elk Grove, CA; and Christian (Shelli) Rasmussen of Kansas City, MO. He graduated from Jordan High School in 1947; and later from Brigham Young University in 1955. He led an Insurance Industry career, including ownership and operation of Beacon Insurance Agency; and retired in 2000 from Utah Local Governments Trust. He was active his entire life in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, fulfilling many callings including serving a wonderful mission to Denmark from 1949 to 1951; and as Bishop of the Millcreek 1st Ward. He is survived by his wife, children and their spouses, and his grandchildren: Opalgene, Dayna, Kirsten and Russell, Jr. Rhome; and Jacob, Nicholas and Brooke Rasmussen. Also by brothers: Vester (Esther), Rulon (Donna), Donnell (Geniel), and Vaughn (Judy). Also by mother-in-law Julina Jacobson and in-laws: Moedl Steadman, Dorothy Rasmussen and JoAnn (John) Barker. Roberts, Fay Fay Roberts 1924 ~ 2005 "In Loving memory" SALINA, UTAH - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, Fay Roberts, age 80, passed away at his home in Salina on Sat., February 26, 2005. He was born June 28, 1924 in Joseph, Utah, a son of James Able and Caroline Conder Roberts. Fay was the sixth of 11 children and was raised in Austin, Utah. Fay started working at a young age mining, truck driving and logging. He served honorably in the US Army during World War II, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He married his sweetheart, Evelyn Mason on February 28, 1942 in Flagstaff, Arizona. They were blessed with nine children. Their marriage was solemnized in the Jordan River LDS Temple, September 30, 2003. Fay purchased a farm in the Sevier Valley and operated it for 17 years. In the 60's he moved his family to Salt Lake City where he owned and operated Phillips 66 at 205 East 3300 South. After 35 years he moved to Salina where he dealt in used cars. Fay was a member of the LDS Church. His family was very important to him. He loved spending time with them at his cabin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping. He also loved a good game of cards. Fay is survived by his wife of Salina; children: Steven and Peggy Roberts, Sharleen and Paul Robinson, Karylin Riggs, Aileen and David MacArt, all of Salina; Shawna and Dino Gamangasso of Kearns; brothers and sisters: Leonard Roberts, Scott and Jennie Boyter, all of Austin; Lavar and Verona Roberts, Nola and Tom Crane, all of Salt Lake City; Elva Thompson of Richfield; 24 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. Roth, Lois Lois Roth 1925 ~ 2005 Lois (Hash) Roth, beloved wife and matriarch, passed away on February 26, 2005. She will be remembered for her honesty, generosity, and fierce family devotion. Born on December 16, 1925 - the last of four daughters to Cleve and Leda (Hicks) Hash - Lois was a Depression Era child who quickly learned the values of resourcefulness and optimism. She graduated South High in 1943 and married her high school sweetheart, Mel Roth in California, on January 5, 1944. She achieved all three self-established goals in life: to be an excellent wife, a loving mother and a wonderful grandmother. Lois and Mel have three children [Lynn, David (Kim), and Janie] who brought forth 10 grandchildren [Daniel, Justin (Andrea), Gena, Kaydee (Aaron), Tysen, Sarah, Calan, Skylie plus Michelle and Trevor] and to date, four great-grandchildren [Aysha, Caleb, Ian plus Rylie]. Those who knew Lois knew her family, as she never tired of speaking about them. A birthday was never missed, even when she was away; as the family grew, she was the hub, holding us together with her love. Lois patronized the performing arts, with a special love for the Hale Center and Pioneer Memorial stages. She was also a loyal supporter of the University of Utah, especially Women's Gymnastics. Smoot 1939 - 2005 WEST BOUNTIFUL - Paul Neldon Smoot, age 65, passed away on February 27, 2005 of complications from diabetes. He was born November 23, 1939 to Neldon and Lola Smoot, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married Linda Smith on June 12, 1963 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Paul spent many years working with his dad at Smoot Dairy in Centerville. Later he opened his own small engine repair business in West Bountiful. He served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Texas Houston mission from 1960 - 1962. His greatest joy in his later years were his 18 grandchildren. He was a very devoted husband to his precious wife, Linda, and a loving father to his seven children. MUSIC WAS HIS GIFT AND HE WILL BE GREATLY MISSED. A.J. was born September 2, 1926 in Logan, Utah to Albert James and Portia Southwick Sr. He married Phyllis Clayton on April 1, 1950. Graduated from East High School went on to the University of Utah and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Speech and Business. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi and Honoree member of Theta Alpha Pi. Served in the United States Navy in World War II and the Korean War aboard the battleship U.S.S. Iowa and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. After his discharge from the Navy, A.J. worked from a Salesman to Vice President of Utah Banknote Company for 42 years retiring in 1991. During his retirement he worked for U.S. Bank as their new construction inspector until April of 1998. During his career, A.J. was a member of various musical groups, Orpheus Club Male Chorus, Utah Power and Light Show Boat, Utah Oratorio Society, Utah Symphony Chorus and Bountiful Community Church Choir. Also much vocal and solo work for groups, friends and family. A.J. has been involved in many public services, President of the Kawanis Chapter of Bountiful, Board of Director of Kawanis Salt Lake Chapter, President and Board of Director for Children's Service Society and President of Oakridge County Club. Among his many achievements he enjoyed river running and had been on all the class one rivers in the Western States and Alaska. He enjoyed golf, bowling and his cabin in the pines. He lost his first wife after she had endured long years with Alheimzers and married again to Charlotte Nielsen on March 4, 1994. His wife, Charlotte, his daughters Carolyn (Doug) Anderson, New York, Elaine (Buggsy) Gardiner, Vernal, Portia Whitmer, Layton, eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren survive him. She was born June 18, 1918 in Clifton, Kansas, a daughter of Bernard and Loretta Straub Wurtz. She attended high school in Haddam, Kansas and at age 18, she moved to Omaha, Nebraska to attend beauty school. In 1939, Veronica met Con Merkley in Omaha and they later married and moved to California. They later divorced. She married a widower, Dr. Rollo Watkins, in 1949. She and Rollo raised his three children, John, Roxanne and Jay in Pasadena where they lived until 1993. They also owned a vacation home on Santa Catalina Island where the family and relatives enjoyed many happy times together. Rollo preceded her in death. Veronica was a wonderful cook. She was a very lovely, talented woman who crocheted tablecloths, bedspreads, doilies and knit over 100 sweaters for her grandchildren and friends. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Concordia Branch. She and Rollo served as Temple workers in the Los Angeles Temple. For the past 11 years Veronica had lived in Concordia, California, first with her sister Marie and then at Mt. Joseph Senior Community. Surviving are two stepsons, John (Judy) Watkins, Glendora, CA; James Watkins, Pasadena, CA; stepson-in-law, Nolan Clark, Claremont, CA; eight grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are four brothers and two sisters, Robert Wurtz, Topeka, KS; Bernard Wurtz, Wichita, KS; Wilfred Wurtz, Fairfield Bay, AR; Lawrence Wurtz, Manhattan, KS; Marie Dorman, and Vera Girard, both of Concordia, KS. Veronica was preceded in death by her husband Rollo, stepdaughter Roxanne Clark, parents, brothers Audry, Clarence and Marvin Wurtz, and sister Theresa Hoover.
