Hansen Beck "Grandma Tell" Our dear mother and grandmother Stella Johanna Hansen Beck passed away after a long fruitful life on November 8, 2005 at Highland Care Center, Holladay, Utah. Just a few weeks from her 99th birthday. She was born on December 23, 1906 in Ephraim, Sanpete, Utah, to James Peter and Annie Caroline Thompson Hansen. Loving and kind parents, they taught their daughters to work around the home and also to help on the farm. Stella's mother died when she was 14. This was a great blow to her and she has missed her since. We are happy that she is reunited with her husband, parents and sisters. Stella attended Ephraim Elementary, Ephraim High School and Snow College, where she graduated in May 1926. She taught school for most of her life starting in Axtell and Plymouth, Utah. She taught in Nephi, Utah and they moved to Sandy, Utah where she taught at Sandy Elementary. She became certified in Library Science and became the librarian at Bingham High School, and later at West Jordan Junior High School, where she retired after teaching approximately 42 years. Stella met her sweetheart Clayton J. Beck while attending Snow College. They were married on August 22, 1928 in the Salt Lake Temple and were the proud parents of two boys, Clayton Ronald (Rosalie) Beck and Roger Neal (Louise) Beck. Tragedy struck when Clayton became very ill after 11 years of marriage and he passed away January 17, 1940. Stella was heartbroken and continued to miss him over the many years since. Strong and hardworking, she supported herself and her sons and provided them with a good life. She made sure that she was able to care for herself all of her life and has never been a burden to anyone. She taught her sons to be hardworking and honest, and she was proud of her family and their accomplishments in life. Stella is survived by her sons, their wives, eight grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. They will remember her for the many handmade gifts of quilts, sweaters, pajamas and beautiful knitted afghans. She loved her home in Midvale, Utah, where she was proud of her flower garden and prize tomatoes and she enjoyed her neighbors. Stella was an active member and officer of the DUP. The funeral will be November 12th at the LDS chapel at 1500 East (Altair Dr.) and 8600 South in Sandy, Utah. The viewing will commence at 8:45 a.m. followed by the funeral at 10 a.m. The interment will be at Spring City Cemetery in Spring City, Sanpete, Utah at 2:30 p.m. Gratitude is extended to the many who have helped and cared for our Grandma Tell at Highland Cove and Highland Care Centers, and to Affinity Hospice. Olpin, Robert Spencer Robert Spencer Olpin 1940 ~ 2005 Robert Spencer Olpin or "Bob" as friends liked to call him or "Professor Olpin" as he was known by thousands, passed away on November 5, 2005 from complications brought on by a stroke at the age of 65. Robert was a beloved professor at the University of Utah for 38 years, an outstanding author of numerous books on Utah Art and Sculpture, and a wonderful man whose humor was legendary and his political views were well known to all. Bob was born August 30, 1940 in Palo Alto, California to Ralph and Lucille Olpin. Bobby was cherished by his parents and lived in California until he graduated from Palo Alto High School in 1958. He moved to Salt Lake City to attend the University of Utah and became a very popular member of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. His various charms helped him narrowly escape trouble and in 1962, he met the love of his life, Mary Florence Reynolds. They were married on August 24, 1963 in Short Hills, New Jersey and a year later were sealed in the Oakland Temple. He graduated in 1963 and they moved to Boston, Massachusetts to attend graduate school at Boston University. He received his Master's Degree in 1965 and PhD in 1971. They returned to Salt Lake City where he began his now infamous position as Professor in the Art History Department at the University of Utah. In his tenure at the University, he was Chairman of the Art History Department twice as well as the Dean of Fine Arts for 10 years, where he helped raise millions of dollars for his college that he loved so much. He adored teaching and loved his students' enthusiasm and just about wherever he went, he was recognized by someone he had taught at the "U". He had an extensive knowledge of art history, but his favorite subject was art in Utah and his lectures (whether they be in the classroom, in front of an audience, on television, in a museum, or sitting at the dinner table), made you want to know when, where, why, and how art was created. The sparkle in his eye, the tone of his voice, everything about his mannerisms, made you appreciate it so much more. He had a magnetic way of drawing you in and making you aware of details that would have otherwise gone unnoticed. He wrote beautiful books filled with as much information as he could fit on every page and you could feel the love of his work in every word. He also won numerous awards for his tireless effort to celebrate Utah Art in every form. He was a teacher, a writer, a husband, a father and most importantly-a friend. He will be missed by everyone who ever got the chance to know him. He is survived by his wife Mary, his four daughters: Corey (Brad), Cris, Kate (Neil), and Carrie (Brady) and his two grandsons, Brady and Brett. He is also survived by the other loves of his life, his dachshunds Jake and Sam. They were his constant companions and his biggest fans, and will miss him terribly as well as the treats, he claimed were never more than bite sized. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Lucille Olpin and his older brother Michael who passed away as an infant. Goodbye Bob. We love you Dad! Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 12, 2005 at 12:00 noon in the Little Cottonwood Stake Center, 6180 S. Glen Oaks Street, Murray. Richards, Maxwell Lynn Maxwell Lynn Richards 10/29/05 ~ 11/2/05 Maxwell Lynn Richards was born on October 29, 2005, he left this life shortly thereafter on the second of November 2005. Joseph Smith Jr. taught, "The Lord takes many away, even in infancy, that they may escape the envy of man, and the sorrows and evils of the present world; they were too pure, too lovely, to live on earth; therefore, if rightly considered, instead of mourning we have reason to rejoice as they are delivered from evil, and we shall soon have them again." Maxwell was one such child. He was pure, innocent and foreordained for a greater calling. Maxwell had proven himself worthy in the pre-existence and was therefore given a special task. It was his charge to come to this life to give life to others. Maxwell became an organ donor, giving life to two children, who will now live long and wonderful lives. He was truly one of the great spirits in heaven and has returned to do our Father's work. Maxwell happily looks down upon us endowed with eternal life. It is now our duty to follow his example so that we can meet him again in heaven to be an eternal family. Maxwell is survived by his mother Rachel Phelps Richards, father Jeremy Lynn Richards, brother Grant Alvin Richards, brother Monte Everett Richards and sister Lillian Mary Richards. There will be a viewing on Saturday Nov. 12th from Noon until 1:30 p.m. Following the viewing the funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Chapel located on 860 East 200 North in Springville, Utah. Jeremy and Rachel wish to express their gratitude to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center and all others who have given their love and support during this difficult time.
