Carleton "Carl" Marlow 1933 ~ 2005 Holt Carleton "Carl" Marlow, 72, retired professor of history at Brigham Young University, died early in the afternoon of Thursday, October 6, 2005 at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah, after a long struggle with kidney disease and other health problems, surrounded by his loving family who will forever honor and cherish his memory. He was born April 2, 1933 in McCurtain County, Oklahoma to John A. and Bessie C. (Lebow) Marlow, the 2nd of four children. He had an older sister, Mary, and two younger brothers, Joseph and David. He met his sweetheart, Beth Ivy Marchant in January 1958. They were married August 18, 1958 in the Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah and sealed for eternity by Elder Harold B. Lee. Carl is survived by his wife, his daughter Lenora "Lynn", his son John and wife Shelly, his son Daniel, his daughter-in-law, Danette, his brother Joe and wife Maggie, his sister-in-law Suzanne, his aunt Irene, his grandchildren, cousins, nieces and nephews. Carl had a special sense of humor which helped him through life's trials and problems. He kept that sense of humor until the end of his life. He was teasing the medical staff and trading jokes until he could no longer talk. In fact, the following is what he wanted for his obituary: "I was born. I married and had a family. I died." He didn't want a fancy eulogy. He served in the United States Army in the Finance Corps from 1954 to 1956 and saw duty in the United States, Austria, and Italy. He was proud of his country and always grateful that he could serve. He earned three medals for his service, of which his family was unaware (until reading his discharge papers to prepare for his obituary). He taught at the University of Oklahoma in Norman while attaining his PhD, then at Memphis State University in Memphis, Tennessee (1962-1964), and finally at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah (1964-1996). He loved teaching and influenced many during the years he taught. Carl was a man of humility and integrity. Because of his special personality and wry sense of humor, he was beloved by those who knew him. He faced life and many physical problems with his humor, dignity, and reason. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
