As was also common, he left a note for just the family to see which always ended with "I love you all and keep smiling." This is the note he left: " I was born on December 23, 1942 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shortly after, I was adopted by Dr. Galen O. and Irene Bunch Belden who have preceded me in death. Not much in my life was notable after that. There was graduation from East High School in 1961, graduation from Westminster College in 1969, working for Union Pacific Railroad in 1963 and elected to Union Officer of the United Transportation Union in 1963. Over the course of the rest of my life, being an officer in UTU has given me great honor and something I have been able to dedicate my life to. Interspersed throughout some of that time, I served in the United States Army and had the privilege and honor of fighting with the men of Blackhorse in Vietnam. Now I skip forward to May of 1988, when I met my soul mate and the woman who brought meaning to every facet of my life. A woman who would complete me and make better everything I attempted to do. From the day that we met until I was called, I have been driven by her energy, by her love and by the desire to deserve to be a part of her life. I have always tried to be a positive influence in the lives of her children and I think I have been somewhat successful. I am preceded in death by our Australian Shepherd, Chase (Mar. 28, 2005). I am survived by my wife, Charlotte 'Charlie' Marshall Belden, Cpl. Michael S. Marshall, USMC, a young man I have always considered my son; Aleshia M'Lis Marshall, a beautiful young lady I have always considered my daughter; and my sister, Kathleen Vysa. I am also survived by the UTU, which I have always considered a family, and an ever-growing family called the "Harley Owners Group." Without the love, the prayers, and the best wishes of all these families, the last call would have come much earlier than it did. My love to you all, and as my taillights disappear over the horizon, don't mourn for me. Love and be kind to each other and KEEP SMILING!" Scott's final call was at home on Wednesday, October 12, 2005 at 8:15 am EST. In lieu of flowers, Scott would like donations to go to the St. Jude's Children's Hospital. Scott said, "No child should ever have to suffer like this." A final ride to bring his ashes home will take place at Waugh Harley Davidson on Sunday, October 23, 2005 at 1p.m. A wake will be held in Scott's honor on Thursday, October 27, 2005 from 4 to 6 p.m. EST at the office of the United Transportation Union in Washington, DC. A gathering will be held following across the street at the Hawk 'n' Dove Saloon, "where stories are to be told and drinks are to be spilled." Scott and Charlie renewed their wedding vows on Tuesday, October 11, 2005. My love, You have many things to explore and lots of "catching up" with friends and family. Knowing you, everything will need to be perfect, so when my call comes we can once again ride off into the sunset together. Until that time, you will be forever in my heart, and I promise to try to "keep smiling." Published in the Deseret News on 10/18/2005. Cunningham, Justin Phillipps Justin Phillipps Cunningham 3/21/84 ~ 10/15/05 WEST VALLEY CITY, UT - Justin Phillipps Cunningham, born March 21, 1984, lived a wonderful life filled with adventure and love. He accidentally died October 15, 2005, while performing a compassionate act of kindness, trying to save his puppy, Blade, from drowning. He graduated from Hunter High School, where he was captain of the football team, and attended Utah State and SLCC. Justin was an active member of the LDS church and an Eagle Scout. He was employed by C&H Construction and enjoyed working side-by-side with his father and brothers. Justin had an enormous heart that was matched only by his brilliant smile. He truly would give you the shirt off his back (and he wore some crazy ones!) His life was filled with numerous family and friends with whom he snowboarded Mt Hood, Jeeped at Moab, scuba dived in Cancun, and fished the Sea of Cortez. He was also a talented artist and mechanic who could modify everything from vintage El Caminos to Jeeps. He was always looking forward to his next great adventure. Justin was accepting of everyone and judgmental of no one. When others would only think of doing something good, Justin would have already done it! Justin's friendships were deep and lasting, evidenced by his habit of exceeding his text-messaging minutes. He cultivated and maintained friendships he began even in his early childhood. Justin is survived by his parents, Joseph and Karen Cunningham, brothers Cade and Travis and sister-in-law Nikki. Justin also leaves behind many loving cousins, aunts and uncles. Surviving grandparents, Phillipp and Jerry Condie (West Valley) and John and Josephine Cunningham (St. George). Justin, because of you, we will love stronger, laugh louder, and live larger. Your smile will help us carry on until we are together again. We love you, our sweet son. Morris, Donald Donald Morris 1927 ~ 2005 On that resilient October morning, Donald Morris ventured home catching his last train here on earth. Don married Ruth Atkin on July 7, 1947, and the marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple, where together they are sealed for all of time and eternity. Don lived life as a free spirit and his genuine personality touched the souls of many. He was an entertainer at heart, seeking pleasure in playing the cool, sweet tunes of the drums in his jazz band. His musical talent led him in the direction of playing with some of America's finest musicians, including the likes of Herb Albert's Band. Dad's love for music cannot compare to the love he shared with his family. He was a man of strong character with an abundance of unselfishness. Grandpa kept his wits about him throughout, constantly using his charm to produce a laugh or smile. His sense of humor was special, a gift from the hands of God that will live forever. Dad was also an exceptional athlete playing football for one of Utah's first professional teams in 1944-45. After retiring from Hill Air Force Base in 1983, he enjoyed fishing, traveling and spending time with his family and grandchildren. Grandpa's passion for life resembled his courageous spirit.
