Monson Jr., Laurence Christen Laurence Christen Monson, Jr 1915 ~ 2005 Laurence Christen Monson, Jr. passed away October 9,2005; at the age of90, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Laurence was born September 22, 1915 in Salt Lake City; the oldest of seven children of Laurence C. Monson and Cornelia Diana Fife Monson. This large, loving family from a modest home in the Avenues produced shining examples of "The Greatest Generation". Laurence Sr. and Cornelia must be very proud of their children. As a child and young man, Laurence attended schools in Salt Lake City, graduating from East High School. He enjoyed participating in athletic events and was a runner in high school. He loved to play tennis. Prior to graduation, during the summer, Laurence and his brother Joe worked on his grandfather Fife's farm in Butlerville, Utah. He was an Eagle Scout with gold, silver and bronze palms. In 1935, Laurence moved to Spokane to become assistant traffic manager for California Fruit Growers Exchange (later renamed Sunkist Growers). Sunkist was to become his employer for over 48 years. He was promoted to District Manager in Butte, Montana. As years went by, he became District Manager in Omaha, Nebraska, and later in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Every time he went into a food store, Laurence went directly to the citrus to check the display of his products; if he found a bad orange, he would pull it from the pile. Laurence married Loraine Huss in 1940, later divorced. This marriage produced his three children. On August 1970, he married Jeanne B. Amis. The marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple October 8, 1971. Jeanne passed away in 2002. Laurence was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served in numerous positions including bishoprics and high councils. He was Ordained a Patriarch in 1977 by Marvin J. Ashton. Laurence was able to fix things; but not just little things. In Butte, he once jacked up his house, did all the digging by himself, and built a foundation and basement. He was not afraid to get his hands dirty, not one to shy away from hard work. Laurence served in the Active Club in Butte, as Treasurer and later, as President. He was enlisted in the United States Marine Corp for a brief period in 1940. We remember Laurence as a true gentleman throughout his life on this earth. He was not one to complain. He was slow to anger. He always gave his mother a gift on HIS birthday. He revered his mother. He spoke with incredible love and respect as he told of her cooking, canning, washing, building early morning fires in the kitchen stove; and all the many things involved in caring for a large family. As the effects of Parkinson's Disease advanced on his body and memory, he never lost his sweet, polite personality. The smile was never far away, the humor endured. He would open doors for women, when he could barely stand without falling. It was difficult for him to tell a joke -- he would start laughing before he was finished. The staff at Silverado Senior Living called him "Uncle Larry", he would smile. Laurence always knew right from wrong; his loving parents, his siblings, and his faith, gave him a strong foundation, and it served him well. He was not afraid of death. Survived by one son, Laurence C. Monson, III (Ann) Seattle W A; two daughters, Kathryn L. Monson San Diego CA; Ann C. Bader (Edward) Minneapolis MN; two brothers, John D. (Julie), William S.
