A most unusual woman, Wanda was famous for her remarkable talents. She could make a rug, upholster a chair, remodel a house, lay brick and rock, and pour cement as well as be a superb seamstress, beautician, cook, decorator, and gardener. She was just as much at home with a sledge hammer as she was with a spatula or a needle. The sound of a wall being torn out was music to her ears. The best way to raise her creativity and determination was to tell her that something couldn't be done. One of her more endearing quirks was her talent for always rearranging furniture. Published in the Deseret News on 10/27/2005. Hinckley Jr., Robert H. Robert H. Hinckley, Jr. "In his own words" "I was born lucky! To the union of excellent parents- Robert H. Hinckley and Abrelia Clarissa Seely Hinckley- on 12th January 1917 in Mt. Pleasant, Utah at the home of John H. Seely. As the first Hinckley grandchild, I was a birthday present for my Grandmother Hinckley. I was blessed with a sound and proud pioneer heritage. I grew up in Ogden during the Great Depression. As a janitor at Robert H. Hinckley, Inc., I swept around a 1933 Dodge Sedan on the show room floor for 11 months before I finally sold it. While attending Ogden High School, I met a charming young lady by the name of Janice Scowcroft. I graduated from Ogden High School in 1936, attended Stanford University in 1937 and graduated from the United States Military Academy in 1942. Life has been good for me, but the very best part of my life began eight years after high school, when I was able to convince Miss Scowcroft that this young Westpointer was the best teammate for her. Then came World War II, The Army Air Corps, B-24's, England, VE Day, VJ Day, life in the Air Force and the Dodge automobile business in Salt Lake City. Out of all of this quality time came four wonderful dividends in the form of great citizens: Robert H. Hinckley, III, oil analyst in New York City; James S. Hinckley, Dodge Dealer in Salt Lake City and Ogden; Dr. Scott S. Hinckley, owner of a small animal clinic in Anchorage, Alaska; Kristin H. Yeager, owner-operator of the Garden of Eden Welsh Pony and Arabian horse farm in Eden, Utah. What enormous dividends these great children have been. I was born lucky. I lived lucky. I have had no problems in this world; I have had only opportunities. I have always had enough to eat, bags o'fun and great family experiences all with the finest teammate one could ever have- Janice Scowcroft Hinckley. We have loved each other and life together for 63 years. Oh yes, I had the fun of enjoying nine of the friendliest Arabian horses that the breed has produced." Robert Hinckley is survived by his wife Janice, sons Robert (Diana Busch), James (Lyn Cushman), and Scott (Anne McCullough), daughter Kristin (James Yeager), nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; sister Betty Nibley (Mrs. Preston). Watson Jr., Alonzo Wallace Alonzo Wallace Watson, Jr. 1922 ~ 2005 Alonzo "Lon" Wallace Watson, Jr. died Monday, October 24th at his home in Salt Lake City. In his last hours he summed up his life in his own words, saying, "It has been a great adventure." He was a man of action - intelligent, thoughtful, charismatic, gentle, fair, witty, kind, athletic, generous of spirit, and committed to helping those in need in Salt Lake City where he was born, grew up and raised his children. Born to Alonzo W. and Lolita Byrd Watson on May 3, 1922, he graduated from the University of Utah (BA '43), the Georgetown School of Foreign Service (BSFS '47) and the University of Utah College of Law (JD '50). During World War II, he served for three years as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corp. On May 10, 1952, he married Mary Louise Koch, a marriage that lasted over 50 years until her recent death. They had two children, Robert Wallace Watson, born in San Francisco in 1958, and Hillary Anne Watson, born in Salt Lake City in 1961. Lon began his career as a lawyer working for the U.S. Department of Justice as a Special Assistant Attorney General and for firms in San Francisco, San Diego, and Milwaukee. But it is in Salt Lake City he planted the deepest roots and began his lifelong participation in this community. He was a lawyer with Ray, Quinney and Nebeker for over 40 years, rising to the senior position in the firm. He served on the boards of many charitable foundations, including the S.J. and Jessie E. Quinney Foundation where he was an advisor and trustee. He helped create both the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation and the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Foundation, and served on their boards for more than 30 and 20 years, respectively. As a trustee, he was known for his integrity, insightful questions, and ever-open door to those in greatest need. He was also a member of many other boards including Westminster College, the Utah Symphony, the University of Utah National Advisory Council, and for 10 years with the Sundance Institute National Advisory Board. Whether playing tennis, skiing, golfing or swimming, not a day passed without exercise. And Lon claimed he never missed a day of work because he was sick. He loved a party because he loved people. He loved a good book and political discourse. A devout Democrat, he was a key member of the exclusive ODO (Old Democrats Only) group, which meets each Friday at the Alta Club. His bible was "The Conquest of Happiness" by Bertrand Russell. He was loved as he loved - completely. After saying his life had been a great adventure, he looked upward and asked, "What are those fireworks for?" "They're for you, Dad. They're for you." Lon is survived by E. Jean Watson, his sister; Robert and Anne Watson, his children; Gavin, Kacey, Ashley and Cole Watson and Chloe Hardmon, his grandchildren; and Eric McChancey and Alexis Watson, his great-grand-children. Funeral services will be held at St. Mark's Episcopal Church, 231 East 100 South, Salt Lake City, on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, his family thinks Lon would have appreciated contributions to the Watson/Koch Scholarship Fund at Westminster College, c/o Advancement Office, 1840 S. 1300 E., Salt Lake City, UT 84105 and the Alonzo W.
