Anderson, Marjorie Durfey Marjorie Anderson 1925 ~ 2005 Our beautiful loving wife, mama and grandma, Marjorie Durfey Anderson, slipped away peacefully October 29, 2005 in Bountiful. She faced the struggles of Alzheimer disease with dignity and patience more than 10 years. She never lost her smile, the sparkle in her eyes or the joy that was in her heart when she would see her husband and family. She was born February 11, 1925 in Brigham City, Utah to Henry Oakley and Vilate Jensen Durfey. She grew up in Beaver Dam and Riverdale with her five sisters. She graduated from Weber High School in 1943. She attended LDS Business College. Marjorie loved being a secretary. She worked at the Naval Supply Depot in Clearfield during World War II; and later at Paramount Pictures. She was one of the founding members of Anderson Engineering in Salt Lake City. Before she married, she traveled around the country visiting her sisters in Minnesota, Nebraska, and California. On June 30, 1947 she married her childhood sweetheart, Virgil B. Anderson in the Logan Temple. Throughout their life together they were a beautiful and devoted couple. They have three children, Pamela Ilene (Terry) Schmidt, Lynn Virgil (Dorte) Anderson, Steven Durfey (Jeanne) Anderson. They have left their children with a legacy of love and a firm heritage. She accompanied her husband during the Korean War to Wisconsin and Washington D.C. She had a full and exciting life living in California, Colorado, and Utah with her husband and children. She was active in the LDS church filling positions as Primary president, counselor in the M.I.A. and on the Relief Society board. She loved the gospel and strengthened others with her good example and high ideals. Her happiness and love for life was contagious to all those around her. She was a devoted wife and mother making home a wonderful place to be. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored her, as did her husband and children. She loved music, writing stories, decorating, cooking and travel. She shared wonderful stories of her travels to Europe, Russia, Alaska, and the Caribbean. She will always be remembered as being the life of the party, laughing with her sisters, and for her grace and generosity. She loved to go on Sunday "rides" much to the chagrin of her young children, but it has since instilled in them a love for nature and an appreciation for the many beautiful places of the world. Her husband and children believe she was their greatest fan. We will miss this bright star in our lives, but we know that she has left her earthly cares and is joyfully reunited with her beloved mother, father, two sisters, and brother who have preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Virgil; and their three children; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren, with two more on the way; her three sisters, Iris (Paul) Vance, Mesa, Arizona, Vienna Kelly, Castaic, California, Carol Kislan, West Bountiful. The family wishes to express their thanks and appreciation for the kindness and care the staff at Orchard Cove has shown Marjorie in the last two years of her life. Friends and family are invited to share in the celebration of Marjorie's life at the funeral services, Wednesday, November 2, 2005, 11 a.m. at the Lindquist's Bountiful Mortuary Chapel, 727 N. 400 E. To her patients, she was Dr. Dahl, the eye doctor in the white lab coat, a fixture of Sugar House for 27 years. She took care of many wonderful patients who were as devoted to her as she was to them. She was known for her precision in finding the exact eyeglass prescription. She had a remarkable work ethic, rarely taking a day off. She continued treating others until her own disease made it impossible to do so. Born January 6, 1936, in Salt Lake City, Mary was the second of three children of Dr. Richard P. and Lucy Rose Middleton. In her youth, she was an enthusiastic tennis player, ice skater and practical joker. She graduated from East High School in 1954. Mary completed a residency in ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, obtaining Board Certification and becoming a member of the faculty in 1967. For one year, Mary and Doug lived in Reykjavik, Iceland, where they had many adventures and learned to appreciate Icelandic culture and midnight sun. Returning to Salt Lake City in 1969, Mary was the first woman to practice ophthalmology in Utah. She was the first ophthalmologist in Utah to perform fluorescein angiography, a test for blood circulation in the retina. She participated in a national diabetic retinopathy study which succeeded in validating laser treatments for diabetic-related retinal disease.
