Allred, Oliver Tillman Oliver Tillman Allred "Gone Golfing" Oliver Tillman Allred, age 95, made his final putt on the earthly 18th green Friday, September 16th, 2005. Oliver was born January 5th, 1910, at Whiterocks, Utah, to George Quayle Cannon Allred and Mary 'Mamie' Elmer. Married his sweetheart of 62 years August 3rd, 1933, at Vernal, Utah. Retired after 26 years working for the State of Utah as a Boiler Technician at the Utah State Capital Building. Oliver was an avid golfer. He was an ordinary man who quietly went through life doing extra ordinary things. He lived a life of service to others, with a helping hand to his family and friends. He will always be remembered for his strong devotion and loving friendship. Oliver was preceded in death by his wife, sisters: Myrtle Irene Henrie, Mamie Pauline Allred, and half sister Elmira Aurelia Roberts, brothers: Lindon Cloy, Austin Quentin, Raymond Cleatus, Delos, Roland Dee, Wendall, Warren and his half brother: Fenton Doyle and Rex 'N' Allred. Anderson, James Allen James Allen Anderson 1923 ~ 2005 James Allen Anderson, 81, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully at his home on September 19, 2005. He was born November 23, 1923, the fifth of 13 children, to James Cleon and Selma Jensen Anderson in Fairview, Utah. He married Audrey June Rolph on June 4, 1948 in the Manti Temple. Allen grew up in Sanpete County and attended schools there. He graduated from North Sanpete High School in 1942. Allen worked at Geneva Steel for 38 years. He was a man of many talents and skills. Endless hours were spent perfecting his garden and orchard. Allen built the family home in Orem where he and Audrey raised their five children. Allen was an active member of the LDS Church where he held many positions during his life. Allen and Audrey loved to travel and did so extensively. He enjoyed golf, playing guitar and time at the family cabin. Allen enjoyed bowling and won gold medals at the Senior Games in St. George. (It was quite a life!!) He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Audrey; five children: James Michael Anderson, Orem; Debbie and Bruce Nelson, Orem; Tanya and Brad Carter, Pleasant Grove; Janet and Chip Garriss, Peoria, AZ; and Valerie and Steve Burnett, Austin, TX; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grand-children; siblings, Ernel Anderson, Lowell Anderson, Gary Anderson, Elma Olsen, Ada Kinsman, and Oren Anderson. Bertoch, Allen Keith Allen Keith Bertoch 1926 ~ 2005 Allen Keith Bertoch passed away peacefully at the hospital in Logan, Utah, on September 21, 2005. Born September 29, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Hazel Coon Bertoch and William Hemenway Bertoch. He attended schools in Bacchus, Utah and Cyprus Jr. and Cyprus High is Magna, Utah where he played football and was all state tackle. On September 1944, he enlisted in the Army Air Cops Reserve and was called to active duty April 6, 1945. He was sent to Hickman field in the Hawaiian Islands. He served as a military policeman and criminal investigator. He was on a motorcycle patrol for General Eisenhower when he was on the Islands. He returned from the service in January 1947 and attended the University of Utah. He was in the business of appliance sales for a few years and many years as a stockbroker. Married Donna Vee Record Aug. 30, 1947 later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple Feb. 15, 1949. She preceded him in death. They had two sons Stanley Allen and Thomas Roger. Allen later married Donna Jeanne Coet Marrietti, March 16, 1980. Her daughter Jeanine became part of the family. Donna Jeanne died March 30, 2000. Allen was survived by son Stanley Allen Bertoch, sisters Marilyn B. McDonald (Ralph), Jeanne Dalton, step daughter Jeanine and his 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. He was receiving special loving care in the home of his grandson Paul and Sarah Bertoch with their 5 young children, Scott, Kayden, Kaitlyn, Shantel, and Alyssa, who brought so much happiness and enjoyment to his life. An accomplished musician, having spent countless hours arranging and performing string music. A dedicated member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, showing great devotion and unconditional love for her large blended family. Preceded in death by parents, Frank and Mima; husband Ralph; brothers Harold, Arthur, Ralph, Lebron. Coons, Donald Lynn Donald Lynn Coons 1944 ~ 2005 Our dad and grandpa, Donald Lynn Coons, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, September 19, 2005 in Provo, Utah. He was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on May 10, 1944 to Harold and Carol Coons, the third of five children. He was raised in Aurora and Richfield, Utah. Dad loved to explore the hills of Sevier Valley, and also loved hunting and fishing. He graduated from Richfield High School in 1962 and attended Salt Lake Trade Tech where he received a certificate as an electronic technician. He then served in the North British Mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1965 to 1967. After his mission, he went to California and completed his Associate Degree, then went to BYU and finished his Bachelor's Degree in business. Anyone that knew Don was familiar with his quick wit and the ability to sell a person anything. Dad could tell stories with the best, and was a never-ending fountain of knowledge. He married Mary Robison in the Los Angeles Temple. They had five children, and were later divorced. In later years, he married Julie Turner and they later divorced. He is survived by his children, Heather (Brian) Davis of Payson; Elizabeth (Robert) Earnest of Sonoma, CA; David (Adrianne) Coons of Sonoma, CA; Bryan (Patricia) Coons of Redwood City, CA; and Angela (David) Niacaris of Brea, CA. He is also survived by his mother, Carol; his sisters Valerie and Diane; and his brother Steven; grandchildren, Aspen, McKell, Tyler, Atticus, Holden, Madison and Demetri were the joy of his life. Born on January 28, 1966, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Niels and Margit Jensen. Jules graduated from East High School and the University of Utah, where she received her B.S. degree in English. Jules worked tirelessly as a journalist and publicist. She was also generous with her talents as a grant writer for non-profit organizations including the homeless shelter. Ikakoula, Seini Sipaika Seini Sipaika Ikakoula 1912 ~ 2005 Seini Sipaika Ikakoula, our loving mother, grandmother, aunt and sister passed away on Sunday September 18, 2005, at her home in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was born on August 1, 1912, in Haalaufuli, Vavau, Tonga. She had three sisters and two brothers. She is survived only by her sisters, Ana, Luisa and Akosita. She had six children, five sons and one daughter, 27 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was married to the late Fauniteni Ikakoula. She was sealed to her husband in the Laie, Hawaii Temple in 1971. She held many church callings in the LDS church, including a mission at the New Zealand Temple. Her husband taught at Liahona High School. She loved cooking, sewing, baking, cleaning, etc. She's a very loving and sweet mother whom will be very much missed by her family and friends. Lawrence, James Gordon James Gordon Lawrence "Our Loving Father, Jimmy" 1921 ~ 2005 James Gordon Lawrence passed away peacefully in his home Sept. 21, 2005. He was born Aug. 26, 1921 in Salt Lake City to Martha and Harry Lawrence. Married Marion J Graham in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they had nine children. He graduated from East High School and received a Bachelors Degree in Biology and Teaching from the U of U. He began his teaching career at Whittier Elementary. Later became a Principal, and continued for 35 years with the Granite School District. He served in the Air Force during World War II as an instructor. He loved nature and spent many years protecting its resources. Jim was a faithful servant of those in his neighborhood, serving numerous years as a Teacher and a Home Teacher. He was the "best home teacher" to many and served them into his last days. Preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Jean; and sister, Patricia Patterson (Patsy). Survived by his wife; children, Dennis (Jan), Michael (Patty), Patrick (Ann), Casey (Tawni), Colleen (Mel), Kathleen, Maureen (George) Fedor, and Brian (Stacie); 18 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Dad said: "In my last years my greatest joy has been spending time and talking with Gavin, Clarissa, Sam and Jeremy" (Brian's children). Loveless 1929 ~ 2005 Aurlen F. Loveless, age 76, passed away September 19, 2005, in West Valley City, Utah. Aurlen was born January 29, 1929, to Ralph Loveless and Delene Sargent Loveless in Payson, Utah. He graduated from Payson High School and Henegers College, and attended BYU. Aurlen married Lela Johnson on March 6, 1953, in Spanish Fork, Utah. The marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on September 30, 1953. He was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Aurlen loved the gospel of Jesus Christ, serving in many callings in the Church, and was a faithful home teacher. He was a Veteran of the Korean War. Aurlen was a retired U.S. Postal Carrier. He loved his children and took great pride in his grandchildren. Dad you are our greatest example. Born in Union Oregon on July 14, 1917, to Henry and Julia O. Maxfield. On December 20, 1940 he married Dorothy Andrews in the Salt Lake Temple, and they are the parents of three children, Anita (Richard) Bates, John (Sherrie) Maxfield, and Julie (Lance )Paddock. After serving in Italy in World War II, he received his Masters degree in art at the University of Utah, and began his teaching career in Utah. He moved to his family to Anaheim, CA in 1963. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, David, served a Spanish-American Mission in El Paso, Texas, and later, he and Dorothy served in the Illinois Nauvoo Mission. He was also a worker in the Los Angeles Temple. Preceded in death by his wife, who passed away Sept. 11, 1988, by his daughter, Julie, and a grandson, Steven Bates. He is survived by his daughter, Anita, and son, John, both of Calif. and survived by eight grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and a sister, Carmen (Willard) Mann of Salt Lake. McConkie, Amelia Smith Amelia Smith McConkie 1916 ~ 2005 Amelia Smith McConkie, wife of the late Elder Bruce R. McConkie, passed away September 22, 2005, at the age of 89. Amelia was born June 21, 1916, in Salt Lake City to Elder Joseph Fielding Smith and Ethel Reynolds Smith. She had five older sisters: Josephine, Julina, Emily, Naomi, and Lois; and five brothers, Joseph Jr., Lewis, Reynolds, Douglas, and Milton. She was educated in the Salt Lake school system and graduated from East High School in 1933. She graduated from the University of Utah in June of 1937. She and her husband, Bruce, were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on October 13, 1937. Their union was graced by the birth of nine children: Bruce, Jr. (deceased), Vivian (Carlos) Adams, Joseph (Brenda) McConkie, Stanford (Kathy) McConkie, Mary (Ben) Donoho, Mark (Mary Ann) McConkie, Rebecca (J. Michael) Pinegar, Stephen (Shauna) McConkie, and Sara (Jerry) Fenn. Amelia has 59 grandchildren and 89 great grandchildren. An unpretentious woman of quiet goodness Amelia was graced with a wonderful balance of wisdom and humor. She was a queen among women, a marvelous mother, and a constant source of support to her husband. Her life was spent in the service of others. She was a teacher and officer in the Primary, Mutual Improvement Association, and Relief Society. She served as President of the Relief Society in the Kenwood, Kenwood II, and Canyon Road wards. She also served as a stake Relief Society president in the Wilford, University First, and Salt Lake Eagle Gate stakes. From 1961 to 1964 she served as mission mother and Advisor to the Auxiliaries of the Southern Australian Mission where her husband was the mission president. She also took tender care of her father after the passing of his wife, Jesse Evans Smith, while he was the President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Amelia was promised in her youth that she would bear testimony of Christ and his Restored gospel among the nations of the earth. She did so throughout the United States, in 47 foreign countries, and in two temple dedications. Notwithstanding her world travels, her greatest influence was within the walls of her own home, where she and her husband planted and nurtured the seeds of the gospel in the hearts of their children. Capturing that spirit, her children and grandchildren have filled 37 fulltime missions for the Church. In addition to the eight children noted above, Amelia is survived by her two youngest brothers, Douglas Allen and Milton Edmund Smith. Merrill, Marian Skeen Marian Skeen Merrill 1911 ~ 2005 On September 19, 2005, a very loving mother and grandmother passed on to a higher kingdom. Marian Skeen Merrill fought a good fight, endured to the end, and has now returned to her Heavenly Father with honor. Marian was born in Ogden, Utah on January 3, 1911, the daughter of Jed and Ethel Skeen. On September 16, 1932, she married Taylor H. Merrill in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they raised four sons and one daughter. She has 27 grandchildren, 74 great grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Marian was an active member of the LDS Church and a dedicated school teacher who enjoyed working with children. She also enjoyed playing bridge, playing in a cello group, and loved to give wonderful dinner parties. She belonged to many different clubs, including Tri Delta Sorority. Many family memories were had at their several lovely summer homes in Logan Canyon, Millcreek, Midway and Weber Canyon, and their winter home in Mesa, Arizona She and Taylor traveled to many interesting places in the world. Preceded in death by her loving husband, her parents, three sisters and one brother; a son, Dixon S. Merrill; and a granddaughter, Annie Merrill. What a wonderful reunion they will now have. She is survived by her sons, Taylor (Connie), Joseph (Myra), Victor (Sylvia), and her daughter Marcia (Ronald) Wright. Morris, Elliot Cobia Newberry Elliot Cobia Newberry Morris 1926 ~ 2005 Our beloved husband, father and grandpa, Elliot Cobia Newberry Morris left us Sept. 20, 2005 to return to the arms of his Heavenly Father. Born June 24, 1926 in Ely, Nevada to James William and Mary Loree (Cobia) Morris, he was the youngest of nine children. A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he served in the campaign to liberate the Philippines and in the occupation of Japan. He married his sweetheart and eternal companion, Margaret Derbyshire in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on January 6, 1950. Elliot earned bachelors and masters degrees in geology from the University of Utah and a Ph.D from Stanford University. He was employed for 30 years for the U.S. Geological Survey, twenty-five of those in Flagstaff, Arizona. He was immersed in scientific research connected with NASA's Ranger, Surveyor, Apollo, and Mars Viking missions. Upon retiring, he and Margaret moved to Stansbury Park. He was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Elliot served as a full-time missionary for the Church in the Eastern States Mission and later in life, with his wife, in the Massachusetts Boston Mission. Other church callings included counselor in the Flagstaff Arizona Stake Presidency, Bishop, and Explorer Scout Leader. His testimony of the restored gospel never wavered. He was able to find a perfect balance between faith and scientific inquiry, never doubting God's hand in the great mysteries of the universe he loved to study and contemplate. He is survived by his wife Margaret; son Elliot Kimball (Doris), Stansbury Park, UT; daughters Loree, Salt Lake City, UT and Nancy Ann Pollini (Gianluca), Swaffham Prior, England; brothers William Wendell, Salt Lake City and Reuben Curtis, Montevallo, AL; sister Anna Buckwalter, Oceanside, CA; and by eight granddaughters and one grandson-in-law. She was born, the second of four daughters on March 8, 1921, in Green River, Utah to Thomas Martin Curry and Hazel Gjettrup Curry. She married her lifelong partner; Donald C. Neeley on March 27, 1939 and was a devoted wife, mother and friend. She enjoyed reading and crocheting. She especially loved reading her bible. She is survived by sons, Ira J and Don Jr. (Cynthia), daughters, Sharon (Doug) Mears and Denise (Dusty) Bills, sister Thelma, Texas; 21 grandchildren, 55 great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren and many much loved nieces and nephews. Ovard, Carl Thomas Carl Thomas Ovard "Grump" HENEFER, UT - Carl Thomas Ovard "Grump," 80, died at his home on September 21, 2005. He was born on February 14, 1925 in Henefer, Utah to Joseph William and Retta Fowler Ovard. On August 28, 1944, he married Kathleen Durrant in the Salt Lake Temple. Carl graduated from North Summit High School and attended the University of Utah. He worked for Brown's Dairy Tank Company and was the founder of Dairy Tank Company and Grump's Gas and Grocery in Henefer, Utah. He also worked for Wardley Real Estate and the State Road. He was known for his wisdom, love, smile and humor. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Henefer 1st Ward, where he held many positions; he and his wife served a mission in Columbus, Ohio and he was also a temple worker. Carl served as a Summit County Commissioner. Surviving are his wife of Henefer, three sons and two daughters: Randy C. (Becky) Ovard, Henefer; Elaine (Lane) Fawcett, Bountiful; Jeffrey D. (Susan) Ovard, Henefer; Wendy (Dean) Bates, St. George; Chris Thomas (Katrina) Ovard, Mansfield, Texas; 20 grandchildren and 35 great great grandchildren. Park, Joanne Morley Joanne Morley Park Beloved Mother Joanne Morley Park died September 20, 2005, surrounded by her loving family. She was born in Salt Lake City Jan. 17, 1928 to Milton C. and June Morton Morley. She received a B.S. with honors in business (1965) and an M.S. in educational psychology (1973) from the University of Utah. She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi. She was a masterful teacher, and taught business at Viewmont High School for many years. She loved to help her students, and enriched the lives of all she knew. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many capacities, including an ordinance worker in the Salt Lake Temple. She loved literature and the arts, and was an accomplished pianist. She instilled her love of music in her children. She enjoyed gardening, and could make anything grow. She had a superb sense of humor, and faced every challenge with optimism and fortitude. She was a wonderful mother, and is survived by her daughters, June Cutler (Steven) Christensen, and Janet Cutler (Phillip) Goble. Also her sisters, Nancy M. Harrison and Janet Sue Morley, as well as seven grandchildren. Sloan, Betty Irene Graham Betty Irene Graham Sloan 1921 ~ 2005 Washington, Utah - Betty Irene Graham Sloan, age 84, passed away Wednesday, September 21, 2005, at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah. She was born February 21, 1921, in Salt Lake City, Utah, a daughter of William and Rachel Ann Nelson Graham. Betty and William Ernest Sloan were married September 23, 1940, in Salt Lake City, where they resided until 1996, when they settled in Southern Utah. Born and raised in Salt Lake, Betty attended Granite High School. She worked at the Busy Bee, for 28 years and was a past president of the Salt Lake Chapter of the American Oil Auxiliary. Betty enjoyed reading romance novels, watching Days of Our Lives, and bowling. She was the best cook in the world and kept an immaculate home. She was a very kind, gentle, loving, giving woman who was strong in every way. Betty was extremely family oriented, and a wonderful wife, mother, grandma, and nanny. She loved animals, "especially cats." She is survived by her: husband, William, of Washington, UT; sons, Raymond (Julia) Sloan, of West Valley City, and Lynn (Jeane) Sloan, of West Jordan, UT; daughter, Rachelle (Loren) Mutchler, of Magna, UT; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grand children; and eight great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her: parents; four brothers, Chauncey, Dick, Lyle, Donald; two sisters, Beulah, and Rhoda; and one great-grandchild, Casey. Earl W Thompson 1946 ~ 2005 Earl Wilford Thompson, beloved husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend, age 59, passed away peacefully after complications from surgery in Denver, Colorado on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. Earl was born March 15, 1946, in St. George, Utah, to Joseph Claude Thompson and Helen Leavitt Thompson. Earl was sealed to his sweetheart Kathleen England for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on September 19, 1969. Earl and Kathy made their home in Sandy, Utah and were blessed with five children who have brought much satisfaction and joy. Earl had a strong testimony of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Throughout his life he was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. As a young man he served a mission in New Zealand. He held many callings, including Elders Quorum President, High Counselor, and Bishop. He was a faithful home teacher. He touched the lives of many through his church service. Earl received his education from the University of Utah and worked for many years in credit management. Earl served dutifully in the US Army and National Guard. He retired as a Lt. Colonel after 20 years of service. Earl had a great sense of humor, and was fun to be around. He loved his grandchildren and they love him. Earl was devoted to his family. His family cherished him for his wisdom, his strength of character, his faith and love. Earl is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Kathy; his mother Helen; his children, Stephen (Natalie) Thompson, Scott (Ulya) Thompson, Jodi (Chris) Houston, Amy (Bret) Jordan, and Tracy (Jared) Livingston; 14 grandchildren; and his siblings, Richard (Gayle) Thompson, Ralph (Brenda) Thompson, Brenda (Don) Fawson, Lisa (Omar) Andersen, Lee Thompson, and Colleen (Vahl) Buchanan.
