Higuchi, Setsuko "Sets" Setsuko "Sets" Higuchi 1/2/1931 ~ 4/21/2005 Setsuko "Sets" Higuchi, 74, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, passed away on April 21, 2005, peacefully at her home, surrounded by her loving family. Sets was a role model to all who knew her with her sense of humor, generosity, optimism, outgoing energy, strength of character and remarkable ability to rise above adversity. Sets will be missed and remembered by many. Sets was born in San Francisco on January 2, 1931 to Fumiko and Yoshio Saito. She graduated from the University of California in Berkeley with a degree in education and received her master's degree at Eastern Michigan. Sets was a teacher early in her career but towards the end of her career she worked as a real estate agent at Coldwell Banker, as well as Prudential. The center of Sets' personal life was her husband of 49 years, Bill; their three children, Shirley Ann (Washington DC), Robert (San Diego, CA) and John (Salt Lake City); and four grandchildren, Bill, Adele, Tace and Rayna. Surviving siblings are Alfred Saito (Los Altos, CA) and Kathleen Yuille (Milwaukee, WI). Preceding Sets in death were son Kenneth, and brothers Yoshiro and Fred. Sets met Bill for the first time as children while interned in a World War II Japanese American relocation camp in Heart Mountain, Wyoming. Years later, they bumped into each other, unexpectedly, at the front steps of the University of California at Berkeley, and after a few dates they married in 1956 (Bill wanted to marry after the first date but, as a matter of principle, she made him wait). They moved from California to Wisconsin, and to Michigan, before settling in Utah where Bill accepted a position as Chairman of the Department of Pharmaceutics at the University of Utah. Sets was a risk taker and fighter (she battled pancreatic cancer in every possible way to the very end) and she encouraged others to plan ahead for their future. Sets, living modestly for much of her life, sacrificed a great deal to make the world a better place for her family and friends. For example, being a teacher Sets was an adamant supporter of her children and grandchildren's education. In addition, Sets did many of the "little big things" ranging from taking her family to University of Michigan football games, to hosting events for her husband and children, and (in gourmet fashion) cleaning and cooking the many fish caught by Bill and Billy (grandson) in the streams in Provo and Big Cottonwood canyons. Sets encouraged Bill to expand his extensive research activities into entrepreneurial ventures, leading to his participation in several life science start-up companies. She was involved in various community projects since retirement and made numerous donations with Bill to many organizations, including The University of Utah. Most recently she was an active board member of the Heart Mountain Foundation and helped organize their national reunion in Salt Lake City in 2002. Sets enjoyed traveling (she was very fond of visiting her ancestral Japan and its neighboring countries), particularly with her family. She enjoyed touring and walking around the Utah mountains, and gardening. Sets' true love and talent was in fashion and interior design that she shared enthusiastically with her daughter, Shirley, and sister, Kathy. Sets' friends and acquaintances are from across the world. Sets often entertained Bill's graduate students (from the respective Departments of Pharmaceutics at the University of Utah and the University of Michigan) and colleagues in academia and industry, all of whom enjoyed her unique warmth and hospitality. A memorial service will be held to celebrate Sets' life at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, UT 84111 on Saturday, May 14th from 4-5:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers or gifts, Sets requested that contributions be made to Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation, P.O. Box 547, Powell, WY 82435. On line condolences can be sent to www.legacy.com Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 4/24/2005 - 5/1/2005. Johnson, Eventa Delores Thompson Eventa D. I arrived on the planet Earth on April 4, 1930 and was given the star name William E. Taul. Barbara and myself raised four starlets, Lyndia, Lee, Jennie, Sheilia, and one star son, Jeffery.
