Tonnesen, Martha Irene Culp Martha Irene Culp Tonnesen 1/24/1926~8/1/2005 "And the only measure of your words and your deeds will be the love you leave behind when you're gone." Gramma loved roses. She learned precisely what her own roses needed. Marty saw herself as a steward of those precious roses, which could only grow and flourish under her special care. It could be said that Marty felt this way about her own life and the precious ones entrusted to her during her time on this earth. Perhaps life is best measured, not by a list of accomplishments and honors, but by the love a person leaves behind when she is gone. If this is indeed the true measure of a life, Marty presented us with a cup surely filled to overflowing. Martha Irene Culp Tonnesen was born in Salt Lake City on January 24, 1926 to Glenn V. Culp and Delia Keeler Culp; she had one sibling, Dorothy Culp Ford. The love she felt for her parents was evidenced by the way she included them in her life continually and helped to care for them in their home at the end of their lives. The joy Marty expressed after having visited her sister in Calabasas, CA just before her death in 2003 was an indication of their strong connection despite the miles between them. On May 31, 1946 Marty married C. Lorin "Tonny" Tonnesen and together they shared 40 years of marriage and four wonderful children until his death in 1987. Marty graduated from East High School and from what was then Colorado Women's College in Denver, CO. She taught Sunday school for many years at First Methodist Church in SLC. She served as a Pink Lady in surgery at St. Mark's Hospital and later as a member of the St. Mark's Auxiliary Board. Marty was a past president of several organizations, including the PTA, the Delta Gamma Mother's Club, and the Hidden Valley Ladies Golf Association. Marty and Tonny also created many fond memories and lifelong friends as members of the Fort Douglas/Hidden Valley Country Club. She was an avid golfer, and managed to hit 3 Holes in One during her years on the links. Marty was also a proud member of PEO Chapter L, initiated in 1950, and held numerous positions, including four terms as President. The love and support she received from this group of remarkable women was invaluable to her. She was a member of the International Order of Jobs Daughters, Eastern Star and Daughters of the Nile. She also enjoyed volunteering with the Assistance League of Salt Lake City. Marty passed away peacefully Aug. 1, 2005. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tonny in 1987, her parents, and her sister. She is survived by her four children. (In Marty's words, you are all "superb!" She writes: "Thank you for being a wonderful foursome - my gifts from God. I love you ~ Mom."). Marty's "gifts" are as follows: Dr. Glenn Tonnesen (and Meredith) of Reston, VA; Dody Tonnesen Nunley of Mesa, AZ; Carol Tonnesen Foster of Salt Lake City, UT; and Lynne Tonnesen Mayer (and Eric) of Valencia, CA. Marty leaves her loving support and her joy for life in the hearts of her grandchildren ("all special!") - Sarah, Brad, Jessa, Kara, Nicki, Scott, Nate, Ashley, and Alyssa, and her great-grandchildren, Ben, Brayden, and Makenna. Marty was blessed late in life to find love anew with her companion of 12 years, Grant Miller, who cared for her and was a source of constant friendship and tenderness. In the film The Notebook, Allie asks her love, Duke, near the end of their life together, "Do you think that our love can create miracles?" He responds, "I think our love can do anything we want it to." Love does create miracles. Thank you, Martharene, for teaching us just how amazing those miracles can be. Marty writes: "Remember the one red rose. I'll do my best to enjoy its fragrance and beauty with you as you think of me and I'm filled with your love and remembrance." In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Christ United Methodist Church, 2375 E. 3300 So., Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. Memorial services are scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, 2005 at 2:00 pm at Evans & Early Mortuary, 574 East 100 South, where friends may call 1 hour prior to service. Private family interment to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 8/7/2005 - 8/13/2005. Vigil, Natalie Marie Gonzales Natalie Marie Gonzales Vigil "Grandma T. T."
