Donald S. Austin 1922 ~ 2005 Donald S. Austin, 82, quietly passed away at his home in South Jordan Utah on August 21, 2005. He was born December 2, 1922 in Honolulu, Hawaii to Herbert A. R. Austin and Beatrice Hancock Austin. He married Ruth Woolley Austin on Aug. 20, 1947. Donald graduated from Punahou School in 1941. He later attended Stanford University and the University of Hawaii graduating with a B.S. in Civil Engineering in 1951. During World War II he served in the Navy Reserves while working as an engineer for Hawaiian Airlines. Upon graduation from college, Donald took a position as a junior engineer for his father's engineering practice, H.A.R. Austin & Associates. When his father retired in 1959, Donald was elected President of the newly formed Austin, Smith and Associates. In 1976 the company name was changed to Austin, Tsutsumi and Associates. He retired in 1987 after 36 years of service. Austin, Tsutsumi and Associates remains in business today continuing the practice his father began in 1934. He loved working as an engineer and gave many years of service giving back to his profession. He was a life-member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, Consulting Engineers Council, American Water Works Association, National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineering Association of Hawaii, and Chi Epsilon. Donald was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he served in many positions of leadership. He served as a Bishop, High Counselor, and Counselor in the Kaneohe Stake Presidency. During his retirement years he and his wife served as missionaries in many capacities. They worked as employment counselors in Tucson Arizona, genealogical librarians at the Utah State Prison, and as proselyting missionaries in Sydney, Australia. Donald is survived by his wife of 58 years; his four children, Donald S. Austin Jr.; Maggie Austin Drake; Herbert H. (Rebecca) Austin; Allan R. (Barbara) Austin; 11 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 25, 2005 at 4pm at the River II Ward, 1540 West 10400 South. Born April 22, 1926 in Salt Lake City, Utah to William George and Geneva James Austin. Raised in Logan, Utah. Graduated from Logan High School, 1944. Joined the Marines at age 17. Served in the So. Pacific on Saipan, Okinawa and Japan 1944-1946. Married Wanda Marie Hansen, December 19, 1946. Sealed June 17, 1966 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Member of the LDS Church serving in various callings: Elders Quorum President, Ward Clerk and Stake Executive Secretary. Worked for 30 years for Stewart Warner Corp. as Service Manager, Office Manager, Salesman and General Manager. Greatly loved his country, his church and most people. Howick Lory J. Howick Beal 1960 ~ 2005 Lory Jean Howick Beal, age 45, passed away August 22, 2005 from complications of pneumonia. Born January 25, 1960 in Salt Lake City to Stephen Boyd and Darlene Smith Howick. Married Richard Roberts, later divorced. Married the love of her life, Kevin K. Beal on March 12, 1987. Lory was a kind and compassionate person who loved doing for others. She had a passion for life and lived it her way. She had the most remarkable sense of humor, and was able to see the funny side of things, even in the most difficult times. She is finally free of the many challenges and struggles she endured. Christensen, Robert Johnson Robert Johnson Christensen 1943 ~ 2005 Robert Johnson Christensen passed away Saturday, July 30, 2005 in Taipei, Taiwan of complications of cerebrovascular disease. Robert was born April 22, 1943 in Payson, Utah to Romagene and Norman Mack Christensen. He graduated in 1961 from Highland High School in Salt Lake City. Bob served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the French East Mission, and graduated with honors in 1967 from Yale University. After beginning a graduate program in Chinese Art and Archaeology at Princeton, Bob went to Taiwan for additional language study, but stayed indefinitely. He taught English to ESL classes and private students, copy edited or translated for the Journal of Chinese Philosophy, Central News Agency and several other organizations, and contributed numerous articles to the Asian Wall Street Journal and various Asian publications. Some of the articles were commentaries on the Taipei arts scene or concert reviews, reflecting Bob's interests. Somewhat later, Bob completed an M.A. in English in 1992 at Taiwan National University, and then did additional graduate work at the University of Oregon before returning to Taiwan. Bob had an enthusiastic, affable personality with seemingly endless energy. He befriended many people and had a genuine, enduring interest in them. He was always sincere and forgiving. Bob was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother, two brothers (Danis and Mack), a niece (Jamie), and a generous and supportive extended family. We are especially grateful to Bishop Ross Chiles (Taiwan), as well as the many friends and associates who have assisted or befriended Bob over these many years. Giambazi Durrant, age 86, of Milford, CT, beloved wife of the late Maurice "Speed" Durrant, passed away on Saturday August 20, 2005 at Milford Healthcare Center. She was born on March 7, 1919 in Bridgeport, CT and was a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah for 35 years. She was a member of the Ladies Oriental Shriners in Salt Lake City. Graham, Lillian Jane Statham Lillian Jane Statham Graham 1945 ~ 2005 Lillian Jane Statham Graham passed away Sunday morning August 21, 2005 at home in Francis, Utah. Grandma Jane was born November 27, 1945 in Caliente, Nevada and raised in Park City, Utah. She married Frank Nuneviller in 1960, later divorced. They had four children. Jane married Dennis Graham in 1986 and spent 19 wonderful years together. She loved to travel and spend time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She worked at the mine and school district in Park City and Bank One in West Valley before retiring. A devoted wife and a loving mother, Jane will be missed deeply. She was preceded in death by her father, Percy Statham. Hamada, Kiyoko (Kay) Kiyoko (Kay) Hamada 1918 ~ 2005 Kiyo Hamada passed away peacefully Monday, August 22, 2005, following a long illness with cancer. She fought this battle with courage, dignity and attitude. Yes, she had attitude. . .it was always pleasant and cheery. She often mentioned that she could hear the birds singing. She was born May 17, 1918 in Ogden, Utah to Maki and Monkichi Murakami. Kiyo married Masaru (Mas) Hamada on July 19, 1944 in Ogden. Mas preceded her in death. Following graduation from Ogden High School, she moved to San Francisco, California where she attended the Ohata Sewing and Drafting School and the Haymor School of Fashion. She loved to design and create the latest styles. A member of the Ogden Buddhist Temple, she was active in church activities, especially with her friends in the women's organization. Kiyo and Mas lived in Tokyo, Japan for 18 years where he represented the Chicago Bridge and Iron Company. Eager to learn about Japan and the culture, she studied Japanese and expressed her artistic ability, excelling and becoming a certified instructor in Ikebana, (flower arrangement), in Japanese doll-making and in sumi-e (black ink art). Kiyo and Mas traveled extensively throughout the world and especially in Southeast Asia. Kiyo is survived by her daughter Claudia Nakano, son Craig and daughter-in-law Susan Hamada, granddaughter Lindsay Mueller, grandson Trenton Hamada and in-laws: Ruby Murakami, Aiko Hamada, Min (Martha) Hamada, Haru (Art) Toimoto, Dick (Sheryl) Hamada, Roy Enomoto and nieces and nephews. Hansen, Russ Russ Hansen 'Papa' Lynn Russell Hansen passed away August 20, 2005. Russ was born on August 22, 1948 in Salt Lake City to Lynn and Jessie Hansen. He attended schools in Salt Lake and graduated from Olympus High. Russ married Anne Mitchener on August 6, 1971. For the last 30 years he has been with Sandy Fire Department, most recently as their Fire Inspector. Being a fireman is something he loved and was proud of. He also loved fishing and was happiest on the lake with his boys. The thing that gave him the greatest joy and the biggest smile was the love he had for his two sweet grandchildren. They were truly a gift and he treasured every moment. She was active in various positions in the Relief Society and Primary over the years and was a member of the DUP as well. She was a long time resident of South Salt Lake prior to moving to the Atria Retirement Center in Sandy eight years ago. She is survived by one son, Glen L. Jensen, Coleen Susan Gambee Coleen Susan Gambee Jensen 1/19/1930 ~ 8/22/2005 One Awesome Lady Coleen Susan Gambee Jensen, mother, grandmother, great-grand-mother, sister, a true friend to all, lost her 36 year battle with heart disease on Monday, August 22,2005 at LDS hospital. One of the youngest female recipients of the vein replacement bypass surgery at the age of 41. Survived a second bypass surgery at 56 and breast cancer three months later, she fought hard to come back from a very rare third heart and bypass surgery and the young age of 75 but somehow knew she would never be the active spirited person she needed to be. Words cannot express the tremendous loss her children and loved ones are feeling as a result of her unexpected passing. Born to Lloyd Owen and Minnie Fouse Gambee 1930 in Latuda, Utah on January 19th, 1930. Graduated from Granite High School class of 1948 and soon after married Darrell W Jensen. They had four children together and although they divorced after 17 years of marriage, remained good friends until his death in 1998. Mom worked for the State of Utah for 25 years retiring in 1990 as Manager of the Department of Motor vehicle in Murray. For the next several years, she spent many tireless hours caring for her mother Minnie and Aunt Ethel. She loved to golf, the Utah Jazz, Tiger Woods, walking her four miles each morning with her special neighbors, Bob, Denise and Diane. She enjoyed many trips to Mesquite with her dear friend Jean but most of all enjoyed spending time with her teacup poodle Chelsea whom she nurtured for 15 years until her death two months ago. We are comforted knowing they are together again celebrating with her dear sweet mom; Grandma Minnie. A member of the LDS church, she was enjoying her recent calling as Visiting Teacher and participating in the ward welcoming committee. Survived by her daughters: Pamela (David) Cavazos, Debra (J.) Milt was born March 14, 1935 in Logan, Utah the son of Ernest Bert and Ruby Jane Johnson Kendrick. He married his eternal sweetheart, Karen Bartonek, in the Salt Lake Temple on August 9, 1956. Mouskondis, Mary Christopulos Mary Christopulos Mouskondis "Yiayia" Our sweet beloved mother, yiayia and great-yiayia fell asleep in the Lord on Sunday, August 21, 2005. Mary was born November 18, 1927 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Thomas and Athanasia Christopulos. She married George Mouskondis on April 27, 1947 who preceded her in death. Mary graduated from East High School and attended business college. She was employed for many years for the Veterans Administration in the Loan Guarantee Division. She also helped her husband in the food brokerage family business, Advanced Institutional Marketing (A.I.M.). Mary was a true follower of Christ and the Orthodox Christian faith. She was a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, and also the Philoptochos and Panahiakos Women's Organizations. Beautiful, from the inside out, she was loyal, kind, loving and giving. A friend to all, you could never stop by for one cup of coffee. Instead, you would experience the best home cooked meal and hours of her charming hospitality. A prim and proper, first class lady in every way. But it was her virtue and patience that set her apart from everything else. She touched us all in such a special way. Everybody loved Mary. She and her grandchildren shared a special relationship which will never be forgotten and cherished forever. Mary is survived by her two daughters: Mrs. Michael (JoAnne) Finicle and Mrs. A. D. Niederhauser, Marguerite Jaggi Marguerite Jaggi Niederhauser "Oma" Marguerite Niederhauser, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother died peacefully on August 21, 2005 in San Diego, CA. She was 90 years old. Born in Basel, Switzerland on June 3, 1915, she and her husband, Alfred, emigrated from Basel to Utah in 1948 because of their devotion to the LDS Church. She served in many church callings, and with her husband served two missions to Switzerland. She loved music, and took great pleasure in singing and traveling with the Swiss Choir Edelweiss. She shared her love of cooking (especially Swiss cuisine) with her children and grandchildren, a heritage they will carry on. She will greatly be missed by her husband Alfred; her daughter, Edie Pike of San Diego, CA; son Orson of Acton, MA; son Thomas of Price, UT; daughter Carol Haddock of Henderson, NV and their spouses. He was born on Aug. 24, 1986 in Kenner, Louisiana, Jefferson Parish, the son of Maurits and Jill (Green) Noot. Adam was a member of the LDS church. He loved life, particularly music and being with his friends. He was a very giving person and helped a lot of people realize their self worth. Born in Paul, Idaho on August 1, 1917, daughter of Orson Frances and Lydia Ellen Higley Walton. Married Elmer William Reed on March 3, 1937. Solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple December 2, 1948. She was raised in East Layton, Utah and as a young girl after her mother passed away, helped raise her brothers and sisters and worked with her father in the fruit orchards. When she was first married, she helped Elmer start a business, doing the bookkeeping and driving trucks where they hauled sand and gravel. Later, after her children were raised, she worked in the school lunch program. Parlee will be remembered by her embracing personality where she could make friends anywhere and everywhere she traveled. She enjoyed spending time at the Bountiful Senior Citizen Center where she could dance, eat and socialize. She was an accomplished bowler and a wiz at cards, but her most precious possessions were spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer William Reed, son, Robert William Reed, and a very special companion Joseph Porter. Sparks, GeNeal Myers GeNeal Myers Sparks 1947 ~ 2005 LAYTON - GeNeal Myers Sparks passed away peacefully with her husband at her side in Riverside, California on Friday, August 19, 2005 after a sudden illness while on a family vacation. GeNeal was born to Neal and Leatha Myers on August 30, 1947 in Ogden, Utah. GeNeal married Richard L. Sparks for time and all eternity in the Ogden Utah Temple in 1977 after a civil ceremony on June 6, 1969. GeNeal raised five children, Richard Jr., Robert, Randall, Christine and Connie who were the light of her life. GeNeal and Richard had the perfect marriage and friendship, always at each others side holding hands. GeNeal was a wonderful loving grandmother to her four grandchildren who loved her and always ran to her arms when she entered a room. Her boys affectionately labeled their Mom, "Molly Mormon" that totally described her life and her love of the gospel. GeNeal had a close loving relationship with all of her children including her daughters-in-laws and her son-in-law. GeNeal and Richard celebrated their 36th wedding anniversary in June and spent much of their time together riding their bicycles or playing golf when they were not visiting their children and grandchildren. Sunday dinner was always a special occasion in her home and a warm gathering place for all family activities. GeNeal lived in Riverdale, Utah while attending grade school and Weber High School. She graduated from Brigham Young University (BSN) in 1969 as a registered nurse. GeNeal was the nurse at Weber Valley Detention Center for over 15 years and a nurse with IHC for 20 years. GeNeal is survived by her husband, Richard, her children, Richard (Rachel Archibald) Jr., Robert (Barbara Lyman), Randall (Tiffany Bean), Christine, Connie (Kevin) Davies, mother, Leatha Myers of Riverdale, sister, Myrna (Ray) Thompson of Salt Lake City, grandchildren, Ashley, Samuel, Collin and Kelsey, 10 nieces and five nephews. She was born July 7, 1958 in Blackfoot, Idaho, the daughter of LeRoy Elsdon Howard and Juanita Virginia Hostetter Howard. Penny graduated from Blackfoot High School. After graduation, she attended Ricks College where she received her Associates Degree. She also received a business degree from Boise State and a Bachelors in Electronic Engineering after attending ITT Tech and Weber State. On August 24, 2002, she married Nephi James Thorpe in Salt Lake City, Utah. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she had served in all the auxiliaries of the church. Penny worked for Evans and Southerlands, TSA for the federal government and Primerica Financial Services in Salt Lake City, UT. She loved to dance, camp, fish, and had a desire to work with children who suffered with disabilities. Ward, Ruth Sorenson Ruth Sorenson Ward Beloved Mom Our dear mother, grandmother and friend, Ruth Ailene Sorenson Ward, returned peacefully to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father Tuesday August 23, 2005, after a lifetime of service and devotion to God and family. Ruth was born January 4, 1933 in Salt Lake City to Cecil Reed Sorenson and Martha Walters Douglas Sorenson. Ruth, her brother and two sisters (Marilyn, Reed and Louise) were raised in Salt Lake City, except for summers spent on the large family wheat farm west of Malad, Idaho, which was homesteaded by her father's family around 1918. Ruth loved her days on the farm. She graduated from East High School and attended the University of Utah. She married James Noal Ward in the Salt Lake Temple on December 5, 1952. James preceded her in death May 28, 1991. Ruth's children and grandchildren were her pride and joy. She found great contentment in always learning, doing, and serving, and she savored the ordinary pleasures best, like music, crochet work, scrapbooking and conversations with her friends and family. She thrilled to travel many countries around the world in recent years, including Greece, Turkey, Israel, Alaska, Mexico and the Caribbean. Many gospel and historical topics of learning captivated Ruth's interest. She liked to follow the events of the day and discuss how they fit in God's great plan. She showed her knowledge and faith by her many works, serving diligently in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Primary, Sunday School, Young Women's organization and in several ward choirs. She served the past 10 years as a temple ordinance worker in the Jordan River Temple and more recently as a part-time service missionary and hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building and Temple Square, where she greeted people from around the world. In recent years Ruth lived in a beautiful area in the southwest part of the valley, where it was her great blessing to meet and befriend many wonderful people in her ward. She will be greatly missed by friends and family. Ruth is survived by her children, Mark Ward (Aimee) of South Jordan, Joan Hogan (Steve) of Woods Cross, Jennifer D'Ambrosio (Ricardo) of Mesa, Arizona and Matthew Ward (Angela) of American Fork, and by her 16 grandchildren. Rachel's life ended much too quickly when a lung infection (Sepsis) took over her body. Rachel was born January 23, 1980, in Richfield, Utah. Rachel grew up in Kearns with her family. She had the opportunity to live with her most beloved grandma, Mona Lou Gentry, for her senior year in Richfield. Rachel was a gifted ballerina/dancer and writer. She married Nefi Miramontes on August 2, 1997, (later divorced) and became a mother on Valentines Day, 1998. Rachel was a wonderful mother. The love of her life was her son, Anthony (Stinky). They loved to eat Chinese food, make dance videos, and go to movies. They shared the love of music and reading. Rachel also loved her niece Vanessa. She was the daughter that she didn't get to have. Rachel became a Licensed Massage Therapist in 1999. She attended SLCC where she was an editor for "The Globe". Her life dream was to write an autobiography - which she was in the middle of. Rachel lived life to the fullest. Rachel lit up a room with her spunk and smile. She had many friends. She offered compassion to all and never gave up on anyone or anything. One of her downfalls, was perhaps, she loved too much. She gave her whole heart when she loved and was often left hurt and disappointed. Rachel, we hope that you feel love now. We will never let a day pass by without remembering and thinking of you. We will love and miss you forever. Together they owned and operated a local tavern, Quix Inn for several years. They enjoyed their fishing outings in Idaho. She enjoyed her retired years cooking, shopping and visiting with her family, friends, and neighbors. She shared her wisdom, helpful hints, and know-how to all who knew her. She is survived by her brothers, Jose L. and Eddie Sanchez, and sister, Vera Struck. Her spirit lives on in her nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Florian F. Weisser, her father and mother, her brothers Alfonso, Benjamin, and Leroy Sanchez, and her sisters, Bertha Sanchez, Della Valdez, and Barbara Trujillo.
