He was born July 25, 1932 in Yamanashi, Japan to Fukuichi and Yasuji Akaike. Upon graduating from Nihon University in Tokyo, he came to the United States as an agricultural intern. While working at the Hori Farm in Ogden, he was introduced to Mary Doke, whom he later married. He joined Kennecott Copper Mining Company shortly after their marriage and retired after 30 plus years of service. In his early years, John enjoyed competing in sumo and judo, of which he had earned a black belt. Playing mahjong with his many friends was a favorite past time in addition to golfing, fishing and picnicking in the canyons. In 1992 he discovered his true calling. Always a generous and sympathetic person, he volunteered his services to the LDS Hospital and the University of Utah Hospital's heart transplant departments and served as a translator. These families were already living in the most stressful circumstances, but to compound the situation by moving to a foreign country where they didn't speak or read the same language was unimaginably difficult. Even grocery shopping was daunting if they didn't know what was inside a package. John gave the heart transplant patients and their spouses cheerful support in their daily activities and both the LDS and University of Utah Hospitals were appreciative of John's assistance. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Mary Akaike, of Salt Lake City; his stepdaughter, Florence Aoyagi of Petaluma, CA; his son-in-law, Edward Aoyagi of Petaluma, CA; his granddaughters, Suzanne Aoyagi of Rohnert Park, CA and Kathleen Aoyagi of New York City, NY; his sister, Yoshiko Yamada of Tokyo, Japan; his brother, Komei Akaike of Tokyo, Japan; his sister-in-law, Akiko Akaike of Tokyo, Japan; and his four nieces and nephews, all in Japan. The family wishes to thank the many doctors, nurses, and supporting staff at St. Mark's Hospital during his stay. Both the viewing and the funeral will take place at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park and Mortuary, 3401 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City, Utah. The viewing is Tuesday December 13, 2005 from 6-8 p.m. and the funeral is Wednesday, December 14, 10 a.m. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 12/12/2005 - 12/13/2005. Dexter, Jack F. Jack F.
