Berger, Alisa Anne Alisa Anne Berger 1979 ~ 2004 It has been a year since you left us. You are deeply missed each day, but your memory is cherished in the hearts of so many who love you. We remember how you lived your life full of laughter and dance until your illness, and then you lived it with courage, grace and dignity. We will strive to live by your example as we look forward to the day when we will be together again. All our love, from your family on earth. This year there was one less smiling face at Christmas dinner, one less gift to set under the tree. But as we look around at the lives you have traveled beyond, we know that you are still here leaving your gifts in every twinkling laugh and warm moment you helped create. Findlay, Aquilla Riggs Aquilla Riggs Findlay Quill Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, Aquilla Riggs Findlay (Quill), 94, returned to our Heavenly Father Dec. 27, 2005. Quill was born December 16, 1911 in Kanab, Utah, to John Fuller and Tessa Riggs Findlay. He moved to Salt Lake at the age of 12. He graduated from West Junior and West High School, where he loved to play the game of basketball. He served in the 8th Air Force in World War II, which he was very proud to be a part of, in protecting our freedom. He met Fay Critchlow at the Coconut Grove, and later married her in the Salt Lake Temple August 15, 1947, for "Time and all Eternity". He was a High Priest of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His favorite calling in the church was being a home teacher, helping many widows with service as their husbands passed on. When the coach at West High retired in 1931, he reported to the Deseret News that Findlay "was appraised by Coach Ballard as the greatest basketball player he had ever coached at West High. His tall, lanky form at center, gets the tip-off from most any high school center, and his push-shot from all angles of the floor has made him famous among the sports editors of the city." In a follow-up article on December 2nd, 2005, the newspaper said "once Findlay graduated from West, he received scholarship offers from colleges all over the West, and even made a few recruiting trips to universities in Wyoming, and Nevada. In the end, he opted to stay in Salt Lake City and play for a recreational team, the Antlers." "Times were not easy, and seeing the sacrifice that my mother and sister went through, I decided to stay home and work to help support them, they had worked hard to get me through high school," Findlay says. "I couldn't just leave them to go play somewhere far away." He was credited to be one of the first players to use the hook shot and one handed shooting method. He loved the game of basketball. Once drafted into World War II, the Air Force wanted him to stay behind and play basketball in the states, but he could not leave the group of men that he was in charge of; he wanted to protect our freedom, and that is exactly what he chose to do. He was drafted in the Air Force by luck. He was drafted in the Army at first and was supposed to fly out with his men the next day. His pants were too short so they held him over for a day. The next day the Air Force took him. He was stationed 80 miles north of London at Harrington Field. He helped to put up all the telecommunications for the area. He was one of the first 500 to be deployed to England. He always enjoyed talking about basketball, World War II and Kanab. His first job out of high school was working at Zion's Wholesale Grocery. He started working as a stock boy, unloading freight trains. After the war, he took a different job with Zion's, selling candy, and other products to small stores, and cafes. He traveled throughout Utah in this business. In his travels, he discovered others selling punch boards. He introduced Zion's into the punch board business, where he doubled the profits for them. Later, he owned and operated his own punch board business. He was self employed for 25+ years until he retired at age 62. Smart, Thomas Max Thomas Max Smart 1921 ~ 2005 The world is a little less wonderful today because our husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend is not in it. Thomas Max Smart left this earth to be with his Savior on December 25, 2005. Tom (known as Max in his youth) was born March 21, 1921 in Preston, Idaho to Vernal and Clothiel Clayton Smart. Sadly, his father died six months later in a hunting accident. Loving grandparents, aunts and uncles stepped forward to help his mother raise little Max. In the small town of Preston, Tom met and later married his high school sweetheart, Claradean Goaslind. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the LDS Logan Temple on February 25, 1943. Through 62 years of marriage, the love between them was inspirational. Their union was blessed with three children. Tom was always generous with expressions of love and appreciation to his family. From an early age, Tom took great pleasure in music, and his talent on the trumpet became apparent. He excelled in his school bands, Navy band and The Men of Note, a dance band that entertained patrons of the Fort Douglas Officers' Club in Salt Lake City for 25 years. He also taught trumpet to students at Westminster College. Tom sang in and conducted many church choirs with an innate talent and flair that brought joy to others and himself. He served in the US Navy during World War II as a Chief Petty Officer. Tom was active in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in bishoprics, leadership and teaching assignments. He served a mission to the North Central States. He and Claradean served a leadership mission in the Salt Lake City area. Tom, Claradean and the children lived in Idaho, Utah and Colorado before settling in Salt Lake City where Tom worked as a mortician and funeral director for Larkin Mortuary. He felt honored to help grieving families, and his kindness was very much appreciated. In retirement, Tom and Claradean enjoyed "snowbirding" in St. George, Utah. Tom had a talent for connecting with people. It seems that everywhere he went he either met an old friend or made a new one. He will be missed by so many people. Tom is survived by his loving wife, Claradean, children Kathy (Ron) King, Sparks, NV; Cindy (Steve) Lewis, Taylorsville, UT; and Michael (Karen) Smart, Boise, ID; grandchildren Matt, Amy, Jon, Stephanie, Kellie, Tim, Annie, Allison, Megan, Peter, Sara; five great-grandchildren; sister Karen (Ross) Hansen, Preston, ID; and brother Carlyle (Shirley) Bowers, Kaysville, UT. Many nieces and nephews will also miss "Uncle Max." The family wishes to thank Dr. Steven Towner, Dr. Clyde Ford and their wonderful staff, and the nurses at LDS Infusion Therapy Dept., staff at Highland Cove, Garden Terrace and Affinity Hospice.
