In 1963, he received his Masters of Architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a professor of architecture and was later named Dean of the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Utah. Among his significant volunteer contributions to the community, Carl served ten years as the president of a non-profit organization that succeeded in building the Multi-Ethnic Senior Citizen's High-rise in Salt Lake City. Following his retirement as Dean in 1993, he served as Executive Director of Utah Non-Profit Housing which builds housing for low income people, seniors and people with disabilities throughout the state. Johnson, Leia Victoria Leia Victoria Johnson 5/25/95 ~ 2/5/05 "Princess" Leia Victoria Johnson was born May 25, 1995 and was welcomed into heaven on February 5, 2005. At the age of nine she was very tired after her long and heroic battle against three genetic diseases. Leia was very reluctant to leave her loving family, especially her mother. She is survived by her mother Sally Ann Sammut Johnson, father Randall Brent Johnson, sisters Chelsey Grace Johnson and Jennifer Stanton Hatch, her kitty Angel, beloved nanny Nancy Alejandra Caraveo, her grandmother Helen Sammut, grandfather Joseph Sammut, her three uncles Dennis, Joseph and Richard Sammut and their families. Most of her life was lived in Salt Lake City, Utah. She and her family relocated to California just last year. But she loved California and wanted to stay. The beautiful red-head was indeed a princess, who took pride in her exquisite head of long, thick hair. However, the color was so unique, copperish-reddish-brown, that everyone stopped to remark on how stunning it was. And her long, luscious eyelashes made her a truly living doll. And every princess has a heart of gold. Loving, sweet, and compassionate, she was thinking of others 'til the end. Leia loved everything pretty and pink, in fact most of her wardrobe was pink. Leia's laughter was contagious as she loved to tell jokes and spark enthusiasm. She loved conversation and kept everyone informed of her day at school. Listening and telling stories was a favorite past time, especially of enchanted places and fairy princesses. She spent lots of times drawing, painting, and writing, always including a heart or "love" in her creations. Leia loved music, any music she could wiggle to, but especially Britney Spears. Her favorite movie was the Wizard of Oz and she identified with Dorothy dreaming of a magical world "somewhere over the rainbow." On Halloween she would always dress as a beautiful icon: Dorothy, Princess Jasmine, or Tinkerbell; but every day she appeared as herself, Princess Leia. She enjoyed school and learning and the company of her peers. But Leia's heart was always at home with her mother, sisters, and nanny. Leia and her little sister Chelsey took special care of one another, always together, always loving. She valued every minute spent with her mother, who was her bestest friend in the whole wide world. Leia will be terribly missed by her family. She is in our hearts, happy and whole in heaven. Smith, Carter Joel Carter Joel Smith 8/23/1989 ~ 2/6/2005 Carter Joel Smith, our sweet little baby boy, age 15, passed away on Sunday, February 6, 2005. Carter was born on August 23, 1989 to Chuck and Lita Smith. Although Carter remained a baby during his time with us, he was able to teach all he encountered. He had a smile that could soften any heart and a giggle that was absolutely contagious. Through him, we learned the joy of service and unconditional love, and the sweet comfort of cuddling. He attended Monte Vista and Windridge Elementary. The family appreciates how much the children and staff at these schools opened their hearts to our little boy. Carter loved school, and especially loved all the attention he got there. Carter leaves a void in the hearts of his parents; his sisters, Carly and Courtney Smith, and Christy Williams, his brother-in-law Jeff Williams, his grandmothers, Corrie Asmus and Mollie Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. In heaven, Carter's reunion with his brother Cameron must have been joyous. He was also greeted by his grandfathers, Stephen Asmus and Frank Smith, his Aunt LaVerle McCurdy, and his cousins, Tom and Andy Jackman, and Jenny Koceja.
