Paul was born May 21st, 1911, the sixth child of John James Fredrick Schmidt and Marie Henrietta Bull. The family purchased a farm on Thanksgiving Day 1911, and moved from Salt Lake City to West Jordan where he developed his character and good nature, and lived the remainder of his life. While attending Jordan High School, he drove a school bus for Jordan School District, earning a little extra spending money, which most boys his age didn't have. He graduated from Jordan High in 1929. He married Laura Evelyn Martinsen, November 20, 1940, in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity. He loved and deeply respected his sweetheart and companion of 64 years. They are the parents of five children: John Schmidt, Byron (Lynn) Schmidt, Dorothy (Paul) Whetman, Stanley (Janice) Schmidt and Carol (Ronnie) Beckemeyer. Paul's father was called to serve an LDS mission to Germany in 1929, leaving behind his loving wife, Marie, with six children to tend and run the farm, so Paul learned to do a man's work at a young age. Hard work and service have become a hallmark of his life. He was an excellent self-taught mechanic and welder. Many friends and neighboring farmers depended on him for help in fixing cars, tractors, or other farm equipment. He loved to visit and would often be found in his shop visiting with friends and brothers he loved so dearly. In 1955, Paul and his brother Henry purchased a farm in Idaho. A few years later, they purchased another farm in Belgrade, Montana. These farms, together with the West Jordan farm, were a focus of family life, offering rich and memorable experiences for both families. Paul was a quiet man, but had a very strong testimony of the gospel. When he prayed, he knew his prayers would be answered. He served 13 years in the Bishopric, five years on the High Council, four years as High Priest Group Leader, and also served in the Young Men presidency. While serving in the bishopric, he would visit every home in West Jordan during the Christmas season. He is survived by his children, 26 grandchildren and 28 great-grand-children. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Evelyn; parents; brothers and sisters Emma Schmidt Pixton, Charles Schmidt, Joseph J. Schmidt, Henry F. Schmidt and Frank B. Schmidt. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Garden Cove Ward meeting house at 1925 W. 9000 S., West Jordan, Utah.
