Wesley J. Aagard 1915 ~ 2005 Wesley J. Aagard, age 89, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 25, 2005 in Sandy, Utah. Wesley was born May 31, 1915 in Fountain Green, Utah to John and Mary Ellen (Ostler) Aagard. He married Voneal Anderson on September 14, 1937 in the Manti LDS Temple. First and foremost, Wesley was a sheepman; as was his father and his father before him. He often said he could not have had a better life. For him, ranching WAS his life. Wesley was past-president of the Woolgrower's Association where he received the Lifetime Sheepman award. He was well known among his friends and family for his quick wit and humor. Wesley is survived by his children: Carolyn (Gary) Gottfredson, Martha (Don) Sutherland, Alice (Michael) Garcia; nine grandchildren; and thirteen great-grandchildren; twin brother, Welby Aagard; sister, Kenna Rassmussen. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Voneal; son, Wesley Gene Aagard; infant daughter, Mary Lou Aagard; brothers, Burnell, John, Vance; sisters, Lapreal, Hazel, Laurel. Arnold, Kim R. Kim R. Arnold 1955 ~ 2005 CHARLESTON, UT - Our loving husband, father, grandpa, brother and son, Kim R. Arnold, age 49, passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attack on Wednesday, January 26, 2005 in Heber City, Utah. Kim was born March 3, 1955 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the son of Lester Jay and Annie Kathryn Turpin Arnold. He married Elaine Soderborg Jan 13, 1977 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Kim was an active member of the LDS Church, serving a mission to New Zealand 1974 - 1976. He also served in many callings throughout his life, most recently as Bishop of the Charleston Ward from 2000 - 2004. Kim was also active in his community. He was a member of the Wasatch County Search & Rescue; the Charleston Town Board for four years; and he owned and operated 'Kim Arnold Plumbing' for 20 years. He truly enjoyed being outdoors, especially fly-fishing. But more than anything he loved being with his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Elaine; six children: Angela (Matt) Fillmore, Bryan (Laura) Arnold, Danielle (Doug) Farley, Kathleen, Spencer and Levi Arnold; mother, Kathryn Cole; mother-in-law, Norma Soderborg-Harris; three brothers: Randy (Vickie), Mike (Sherilyn), Dale (Anna); and eight grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Lester Jay, and father-in-law, Don L. Soderborg. Beach, Jon Lee Jon Lee Beach 1964 ~ 2005 Jon Lee Beach, 40, died on January 25, 2005, in Salt Lake City, Utah. His health had been declining for several years. Jon was born in Gothenburg, NE, on June 18, 1964. He attended Aurora, NE, public schools and graduated in 1982. He subsequently attended Hastings, NE Community College. After college he moved to California. After a brief stay, he moved to Salt Lake City, where he lived until his death. Jon was preceded in death by his father, John Beach; grandparents, Wayne and Dorothy Beach and Leland and Mildred Ripley; and step-grandmother, Erma Ripley. He is survived by his mother, Marji Beach; twin sister, Jodi Zaruba; brother-in-law, Tim Zaruba; and an adored nephew, Trevor; all of Raleigh, NC. He is also survived by a stepmother, Rheta Beach of Salt Lake City, as well as many friends and family. Jon loved to laugh and never met a stranger. He had a kind and loving spirit and will be dearly missed. A memorial service will be held at Memorial Mortuary, 5850 S. 900 E., Murray, UT at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 28, 2005. Steven Bird (63), born to Melban N. and Virginia Sharp Bird in Salt Lake City, Utah, December 16, 1941, died Friday, January 21st at 1:46 p.m. in Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City. Steve graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City in 1960. He was a proud alumnus of the University of Utah and brother in the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He served in the Army Reserves at Fort Ord. Steve married Janice Morgan in 1964. The family moved to seven different locations around the country when Steve was employed for Armour Dial Inc. from 1965 to 1976. They then remained in Edmond, Oklahoma where he became a partner with Carl C. Wheeler & Associates. He stayed with the business until it dissolved in 1997. Steve's passion was golf. He enjoyed playing as well as watching golf. He was an avid sports fan of all kinds. He followed golf, football, basketball, and baseball religiously. Steve became an avid supporter of organ donation after he received a liver transplant in May of 1994. In August 2004 Steve learned he had stage IV lung cancer that had spread to the bones. Though he was strong willed and optimistic this ultimately lead to his death four and a half short months later. Steve is survived by his older brother Scott and wife Barbara of Orinda, California; His younger sister Becky Vos and husband Neil of Draper, Utah; His ex-wife Janice Bird of Edmond, Oklahoma; His son Steven M. Bird and wife Cathy and their two sons, Shane and Brett of Little Rock, Arkansas; And his daughter Amanda M. Giles and husband Tadd and their four children Talya, Mason, Landon and Baylor of Kirkland, Washington. He will be missed by his family and a host of friends around the country. Brunsvold, a true "son of Beach," beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, went home in the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Wednesday, January 26th. His unconditional love, infectious smile, sense of humor and lefsa will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing this honorable man. Born June 1st, 1928 to Byron and Lydia in Beach, North Dakota. He worked for Ford Motor Company until 1988 and spent the last 16 years in blissful retirement. Edgar, 80 years old, quietly slipped away Wednesday, Jan. 26, 2005, surrounded by her family. Miriam was born in Hanover, Germany on April 17, 1924. When she was two, her family immigrated to New York City. Her family moved to Salt Lake City while she was in her teens. She was married briefly to Ahti Niemela and then to Don Edgar. Retired from Utah State government where she was the manager of Central Stores and then worked for the LDS Church for 10 years. She was an active member of the LDS church where she served in numerous callings, one of which included genealogy work, which was her life passion. Her accomplishments in genealogy were immeasurable. Another passion was reading. She studied everything, including the Bible, geology and history. She loved the arts. She was a season ticket holder to the opera and ballet, which she enjoyed with friends and her grandchildren. Miriam also enjoyed many outings with the Senior Friends. Some of her other interests included gardening, yard sales and Saturday morning massages. Her best memories are the times she spent with her son driving in the desert rock hunting. That was a passion they shared. Miriam was a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, daughter and aunt. She recognized the needs of her family and was always there for them. She is survived by her son Michael (Jinnie) Edgar, West Bountiful, grandchildren Kelly (Jonalynn) Edgar, North Salt Lake, Barbara ("Bobbie") (Robert) Bennett, Sandy, and great granddaughter, Autumn Bennett. Also survived by her sweet step-mother and best friend, Eva Retzlaff, her loving brothers Carl (Doris) Retzlaff and Martin Retzlaff, all of Salt Lake City. Alsp several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her mother and father, Carl Frederick and Marta Henriette Retzlaff, and her sister Dagmar (Bill) Winward. Featherstone, Catherine Catherine Featherstone 1910 ~ 2005 Catherine Wymer Featherstone of Bountiful, Utah, loving wife, mother and friend returned to her heavenly home Wednesday, January 26th, 2005. Born January 15, 1910 in Ogden, Utah to Charles E. Wymer and Josephine Nelson. Married Dean R. Featherstone in the Salt Lake Temple in 1929. Survived by children Nancy Gunn of Denver, CO, Marie Hill of Tucson, AZ, Richard (Emily) Featherstone of Henderson, NV and Zen (Gayle) Featherstone of Layton, UT, and sister-in-law Janet Romney. Also 20 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Catherine graduated from the LDS High School and attended LDS Business College. She worked for Sego Milk Company, American Automobile Association, and the Utah State Dept. of Aging. Catherine served in many LDS church callings, often as ward organist or pianist in various auxiliaries. She loved music and played for church meetings at Heritage Place until 93 years of age. With her companion and best friend, Dean, she served a mission in Nauvoo, Ill. from 1975-76. Her kind and gentle way will be missed. Playing bridge with friends and family was a favorite recreation. Her pies and rolls are world famous. Three different cancers couldn't take her fighting spirit. The family wishes to thank caregivers from The Heritage Place, The Avalon Care Center, the Odyssey Hospice providers and dear family friends Suzanne Granger and Sylvia Bailey for helping Mother be as comfortable and happy as possible in the last months and years of her life. She was born October 1, 1918 in Canton, China to Frank Yee and Toy Lin Gee. She married Leslie Quan Gin in China. He preceded her in death. Haedt, La Von R. La Von R Haedt 1912 ~ 2005 La Von R Haedt, age 92, passed away January 20, 2005 with her husband at her side. She was born April 22, 1912 to J. Earl and Minnie Rytting. She grew up in the Liberty Park area of Salt Lake and graduated from East High School. She worked as an executive secretary at Ingersoll Rand company until her marriage to Robert V Haedt Jr June 20, 1942. Their never faltering love flourished for almost 63 years. She kept and cherished a love letter to her, dated May 1, 1942, which said, in part, "All I can say is that I love you- over and over- a thousand times or more- for that is what really matters." They met as members of the Wasatch Mountain Club as novice skiers and both shared the love of the mountains and skiing prompting a move to Park City in 1983. In 1965 she started a gift store, La Boutique which later became GREAT GARB which she ran, with her son Bob, in Salt Lake and Park City until a stroke forced her to retire late 1999. She was always active; skiing, tennis, golf, and entertaining. Her recipes were always in demand. They loved to travel evident by the 15 cruises they took to the Tropics, Europe, and South America. Two brothers, Edward and Robert; and a sister, June, preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband; sons, Robert and David; grandchildren, Olivia and MacKay; and brother, William Rytting; nieces and nephews. Heartfelt thanks to the nurses and staff of Christus St. Joseph Villa for their loving care during her last few months. Jones, M.D., prominent Salt Lake City physician, died January 21, 2005 of causes related to cancer. He was born October 11, 1922 in Hiawatha, Utah to William Bell and Sylvia Alta Jones. The absence of his dry wit and contagious laughter creates a void no other can fill. Bob graduated from Carbon High School in 1939 and from the University of Utah in 1943. Although offered a scholarship to the Juilliard School of Music, Bob instead chose to follow in the footsteps of his older brother, Jack, and received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania Medical School in 1946. During medical school, Bob joined the U.S. Army and following graduation served as an army doctor at Valley Forge General Hospital, from 1948 to 1949. He decided against an army career when he discovered argyle socks were not standard issue. Following completion of his internship at Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia and a residency at Delaware Hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, Bob returned to Salt Lake City in 1952 to begin private practice. He practiced internal medicine more than 42 years and was affiliated with Salt Lake Regional Medical Center (formerly Holy Cross Hospital). Bob enjoyed traveling, tending his beautiful flower gardens, collecting and creating works of art (he especially enjoyed working with stained glass), Jazz basketball, and professional tennis. Above all, however, he enjoyed practicing medicine. Helping the sick was never considered work - it was his privilege. Bob was the embodiment of a dedicated, selfless, caring generation of physicians. The lives he saved are many; the lives he touched immeasurable. Bob is survived by his sister-in-law, Sarah Anne Jones; nieces, Linda Oswald (Fred), Cynthia Jones, M.D. (Steve Prather, M.D.); nephew, David Jones; his devoted friend and long-time assistant, Sandra McDonald; and loving friend and companion, Dorothy Woolf. Preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Frank Jones, who died in infancy, and William Jack Jones, M.D. Sincere gratitude is offered to Bob's wonderful neighbors and friends, to the hospice nurses and to Margaret Hecht, M.D., for their generous gifts of love, care and support. She was born on June 20, 1950 in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is survived by her husband - Mark Robert Malley of Naperville, whom she married February 11, 1977; two children - Seth David (Reyna) Malley of Dover, DE and Amy Marie Malley of Naperville, IL; her mother, Deloris (nee Barker) Rasmusson of Salt Lake City; three Siblings - Marilyn (Steve) Avery, Cheryl Rasmusson and David Rasmusson, all Salt Lake City. A homemaker for many years, Mrs. Malley taught school and worked for her husband's business before starting her family. Marett, George George Marett Sheriff BRIDGELAND, DUCHESNE CO.- George Ephraim Marett, age 88, of Bridgeland passed away quietly in his sleep on January 27, 2005 at his home. George was born July 13, 1916 in Lake Fork (Ioka) to Parley Marvell and Mary Lavina Mitchell Marett. Married for 56 years to Edythe Wimmer. Since 1954 George and Edythe have lived on their farm near Duchesne. George's first love as an occupation was tilling the soil. He served for 24 years as elected County Sheriff of Duchesne County. After retiring from the office of sheriff he devoted his working time to running the family farm, with the help of his children and grandchildren. An active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, George served as Bishop's Counselor in the Bridgeland Ward and on the High Council of the Duchesne Utah Stake. Matley 1907 ~ 2005 LOGAN, UTAH: Kathryn Stahmann Matley passed away at Sunshine Terrace in Logan, Utah, on January 26, 2005-the date of her husband, Mark's, birth. The first of the six children born to Benjamin R. and Lydia Soeffner Stahmann, Kathryn was born in Payson, Utah, on May 23, 1907. She grew up in Spanish Fork and attended schools in Spanish Fork, Utah, and Palo Alto, California. She was also a graduate of Brigham Young University. Her teaching career began in Coalville Utah, where she taught in the North Summit Elementary and Secondary schools for 25 years. Kathryn married Mark A. Matley on August 1, 1928. Their family was later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together, she and Mark served in the Nauvoo Mission, and she was also a Temple Officiator in the Logan Temple. Mark passed away in 1980. They are the parents of two children: Fred (Myrna) Matley and Joyce (Kent) Wood. Along with her children Kathryn is survived by her brother, Fred Stahmann, and her sister, Grace Stahmann Bishop; eight grandchildren, 22 great-grand children and one great, great grandson. Morrison, 68, passed away in Bountiful, Utah, January 26, 2005 having humbly met the challenges of dementia, multiple strokes and Parkinson's Disease. He was born August 27, 1936 in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Charles Henry and Ann Morrow Morrison. He married Sheila Adair, December 22, 1960 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Teaching math was his love and he reluctantly left the classroom to be a counselor some years before retiring in 1996, having served 35 1/2 years in the Salt Lake and Granite School Districts. Dale also retired from the Utah Air National Guard after serving 20 years in the refueling unit. He was a man of many talents. He loved to build and our home displayed his handiwork, as did a ski boat he built in his youth. He helped build his parents home at Bear Lake, helped many neighbors with projects, and tutored friends' children in math. Dale was proud of his family and loved them. We will continue loving him and we will miss him; but we are grateful that he is finally free. Thomas was born on March 20, 1930 in Cidra, Puerto Rico to Fernando and Bernanda Santos Quiles. He married Gloria Esther Santiago Alverio, November 20, 1947, later solemnized in the Oakland, CA. LDS temple. He was a master chef, loving to cook, and especially loved his family. He is the father of four sons and two daughters and grandfather to 20 grandchildren and 35 great-grand-children. Scott, Ruth Carolina Pearson Ruth Carolina Pearson Scott 1917 ~ 2005 Ruth Carolina Pearson Scott of Pinesdale, Montana, passed away January 27, 2005 at the Marcus Daly Hospital in Hamilton, Montana. She was born in Ririe, Idaho, May 16, 1917 to Clarence and Johanna Pearson and grew up in the Salt Lake Valley, Utah. Ruth married George W. Scott in 1948 and in 1956 they moved to Montana. Her home has been the Bitterroot Valley for the last 38 years. She loved Montana, the Valley and the people here, and was loved and respected by all who knew her. She is survived by one brother and four sisters, five children, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren, and a multitude of friends. She was a strength to her family and her community. We will miss her love and her light. A viewing will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the Pinesdale Chapel on Saturday, Jan. 29. The funeral will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday in the Pinesdale Chapel. Interment will be in the West Jordan Cemetery, Salt Lake City, Utah on Monday, January 31. Stahl, 89, died Wednesday January 26, 2005 in Tooele with her family by her side. She was born July 11, 1915 to Angelo and Clementina (Amestadi) Marchetti Sr. in Chisholm, Minnesota. She married her eternal sweetheart, John E. Stahl on August 28, 1940 and out of this union they were blessed with two children, John and Fay. Ida worked at the Central School as a lunchroom cook then went to the Harris Elementary also as a lunchroom cook. She left the school to work at the old Officer's Club at the Tooele Army Depot, and then she retired to spend time with her husband. She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary for 50 years and made many friends she cherished. She was also a member of St. Marguerite's Catholic Church in Tooele. She enjoyed cooking for the Holidays knowing she would have a house full of family members present and they did love to eat. She enjoyed crocheting making hats and slippers for the family members. She was preceded in death by her parents Angelo and Clementina (Amestadi) Marchetti Sr.; husband John E. Stahl in 1982; brother Angelo Marchetti Jr.; and sisters Viola Bertagnoli, Mary Haigh, Rose Lucas and Annie Stahl. She is survived by her son, John W. Stahl, daughter Fay (Ben) Ruybal both of Tooele; sister Angeline (Ted) Balko of Blackduck, MN; grandchildren, Travis (Jodi) Ruybal of Portland, Oregon; Troy and Ace Ruybal and Toni Valdez of Tooele, Preston Stahl of Salt Lake and Lindsay Stahl of St. George; great-grand-children Hayden Ruybal of Taylorsville; Trenton Ruybal and Kenadee Valdez of Tooele. Steele, Harold James Harold James Steele "A Noble Gentleman" On January 24, 2005, Harold died of natural causes at the age of 93. Born to James Hardy and Elizabeth Sumner Steele on Dec. 23, 1911 in Rigby, Idaho, raised in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Harold graduated from Rice Institute and completed his graduate work at the University of Texas (Houston). After graduation, he accepted a job in Washington, D.C. with the Federal Housing Administration. Harold was highly respected in both the business and social communities. He was President and a Director of First Security Bank; Vice President and Director of First Security Corporation; Member of Investment & Policy Committees, Executive Board of First Security Corporation. He also served as President of the Utah Bankers Association, President of the Clearing House Association; President of the Alta Club, President of The Utah Symphony; President of the Salt Lake Chapter of the American Red Cross; Chairman of Ballet West Board, Chairman of St. Mark's Hospital Board; Chairman of the Marriner S. Eccles Foundation; Director of the following: Anderson Lumber Company, Alta Industries, Christiansen Diamond Company, St. Mark's - Rowland Hall School, YWCA, and the Salt Lake Chamber of Commerce. In 1970, Harold was elected to serve on the International Board of IBANCO, the parent Board over all international banks issuing Bank Americard - now Visa Card. In 1985 Harold was honored by the Utah Arthritis Foundation as their "Man of the Year". He was presented this honor by former first lady, Betty Ford. During his retirement years, he and his wife, Eleanore, lived both in Indian Wells, California and Salt Lake City. He served as a director of The Eldorado Country Club, as well as The Salt Lake Country Club. Harold was also a member of the Desert Island Country Club (Rancho Mirage, CA), Flat Rock Fishing Club (Idaho), New State Hunting Club, and the Teton Valley Lodge (Idaho). To reduce the magic of Harold's life to his extensive list of business and social accomplishments seems incomplete, since such accomplishments, although important in their works, are only parts of his true life's achievements. We will miss the twinkle in Harold's eye, his unending curiosity and the genuine interest he had for everyone he met. Lucky were the many who experienced Harold's charm and wit, especially at dinner parties or the many social functions he attended. A noble gentleman always, we will remember Harold for the ready smile on his face and the love and kindness in his heart. The full balance of his life was celebrated with his wife Eleanore Eccles, who he married on September 1, 1937. Together they raised a family, traveled extensively, played lots of golf, entertained and enjoyed 67 very good years together. Harold is survived by his wife, Eleanore and his three children; James M. Steele (Linda Wolcott), Sharon Steele-McGee (Stephen), Robin Steele Palmer (Kent); four grandchildren; Stephanie R. Steele, J. Michael Steele, Anna Palmer, Maysie Palmer and one great-grandchild, Ashton Jones. Velasquez, George Paul George Paul Velasquez "Devoted Father, Grandfather & Son" George Paul Velasquez passed away of natural causes on January 26, 2005. George was born May 25, 1935, son of Fidel and Benita Velasquez, in Bingham, Utah. He graduated from Granite High School, attended the University of Utah and was a member of the Utah National Guard Engineering Division. George was employed by several different companies throughout his life; however, George's passion, along with George Jr., his sidekick, was buying cars and fixing them up. George was survived by his mother; brothers and sisters, Joe, Dale, Esther, Elaine, Rose, Ben, and Mick, including their spouses and children; his children, Jim (Sheree), Candy (Mario), Tammy (Rick), George Jr. and 12 grandkids. Wagstaff, Dale Cleon Dale Cleon Wagstaff 1954 ~ 2005 Dale Cleon Wagstaff died January 17, 2005. Dale was born October 6, 1954 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Donald Hills Wagstaff, Sr. and Annie Lucile Bowcutt Wagstaff. He comes from a family of ten children and has an identical twin brother. Dale is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. From his early youth, Dale appeared in many plays and musical productions at the Valley Music Hall, and at the University of Utah. He grew up in Holladay, Utah and later moved with his family to the Foothill area of Salt Lake City where he attended Highland High School. Dale taught school at the Salt Lake Technical College and was a skilled mechanic and craftsman. Dale was an avid snow skier, competitive motorcycle rider, and all around sports enthusiast. He was an accomplished musician and artist. He loved nature and was most comfortable out of doors with the wind blowing through his hair. From the time he was a little boy, he had a fascination with trucks. He used to play on the tank trucks at his father's Gas Stations and Truck Stop. Dale began "Dale C. Wagstaff Trucking Company" in 1973. He traveled over three millions miles, serving people and making friend across North America for over thirty Years. Since 1986, Dale lived in Billings, Montana. He loved Montana's Big Sky, and his passing is a great loss to his friends and family who love him so much. Dale is survived by his 90 year-old mother, Annie Bowcutt Wagstaff, eight siblings (four brothers and four sisters); Sheryl (Steve) Mason, Stevensville, Montana; Donald H. Wagstaff, Jr., Las Vegas, Nevada; Janet Howells Wolfley (Darrell), Shoal Creek, Alabama; Doug (Laura) Wagstaff, Oakley, Utah; Dwayne (Carmen) Wagstaff, Twin Falls, Idaho; Kathy (Mark) Emery, Holladay, Utah, Darlene Macey Hughes (Jordan), Sandy, Utah; Darol (Loree) Wagstaff, Bountiful, Utah. Dale loved all of his nephews and nieces and considered his twin brother Darol's five children and twin grandchildren to be his own. Dale was preceded in death by his father, and his older sister Judith Elaine Wagstaff. Through the Organ Donor program, Dale was able to extend the lives of four individuals.
