Passionate about gardening, she enjoyed landscaping each new home. Her kids loved to tease her about knowing the common (and Latin) names of each flower variety known to man. Peggy lived life with frugality and moderation, moving at a gentle pace to enjoy the beauty of life around her. She is known for her quick wit, quiet intelligence, love of geography, and her wide knowledge on many subjects, often reading encyclopedias and dictionaries in her spare time. Shafer, James Harry James Harry Shafer 5/6/1914 ~ 5/26/2005 The family of James (Jim) Shafer would like to share in a celebration of his passing with all of his friends. He set out on his final cruise May 26, 2005 from the Residence of Care Source in Salt Lake City, Utah. Jim was born in Pocatello, Idaho on May 6, 1914, the son of Harry and Urania Shafer. He graduated from Pocatello High School, where he was known as "Slim Jim". He also attended Diesel Technician Institution in Portland, Oregon. On July 3, 1938 he and Dorothy Perkins were married in Pocatello and then moved to Salt Lake City. He worked for 47 years as fleet operation manager at Garrett Freight Lines, where he was the backbone of the fleet. Under Jim's supervision, he helped Garrett become one of the top trucking companies in the country. Known as "Big Jim" at Alta, Jim, with wife "Tomata" were true pioneers in encouraging families to enjoy the outdoors together. Through their efforts, skiing was introduced to numerous children and their parents in the Salt lake Valley. In like fashion, in summers, Jim and Dorothy (Poppie and Goggie) taught us all how to enjoy the wonders of nature; hiking in the Wasatch Mountain, and water skiing at Wanship, Flaming Gorge, Jackson Lake, Redfish Lake and Lake Powell. Poppie especially enjoyed his role in tour guide at Lake Powell, showing countless friends and family the wonders of the red rock canyons, and the secrets of catching striped bass for dinner. For a man who never learned to swim, Big Jim loved his boats and being on the water; the very water that a few months earlier has been the snow in the Colorado Rockies where Jim and Dorothy, son Jim and daughter Sue had spent winter vacation at Aspen and Vail. On other years they ventured to Sun Valley, where Jim and Dorothy found themselves in 1936 helping to inaugurate that grand lady of the skiing world. They loved to dance away the evenings in the Duchin Room, and make friends with all who came by. Poppie, as he was nicknamed by granddaughter Jennifer, will always be remembered for his big smile and even bigger heart. With Dorothy as the social director, and Jim with his signature expression, "Yes, Dear", there was never a dull moment around the campfire, or barbeque, or on the beach, or at lunch at Alta. Jim was always there to tell stories, help fix something, offer a ride, change the oil, or tow a boat. He was truly a wonderful, gentle man to all. Jim is survived by his daughter Sue Rowland (Frank) and son Jim Shafer (Carol); grandchildren Jennifer Diehl (Brent) and their two sons Hunter and Axel; Ginger Ferries (Tom), John Rowland, Michael (Kimberly) Tolley and their children Kayleigh, Katherine, and Emma; and Ryan Shafer. Jim was recently preceded in death by his lifetime companion and loving wife of 67 years Dorothy. A celebration of Jim's Life will be held Saturday, June 4, 2005 at 11 a.m. at the Holladay Cottonwood Mortuary, 4670 Highland Drive, Salt Lake City. There will be a reception for all family and friends following the ceremony at the Peruvian Lodge in Alta (van provided). In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made in Jim's name to the Utah Ski Archives addressed to: University of Utah Ski Archives, Marriott Library, 295 South 15th East, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112.
