Gene Hatch 1917 ~ 2005 SALT LAKE CITY - Wilda Gene Glasmann Hatch, age 87, passed on June 7th in her home surrounded by family and loving caretakers. When Gene passed on, she left her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren a legacy to share with all Utahns. Gene was a quiet but effective voice for the beautiful Redrock canyons and plateaus of Southern Utah. With her husband, George Hatch, and other conservationists, Gene helped establish Capitol Reef and Canyonlands National Parks, expand the borders of Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, add lands to Arches National Park and create Antelope Island State Park. As a young woman, Gene was deeply concerned about the welfare of migrant workers. In 1937 she interrupted her studies at Stanford University to offer assistance to those hit hardest by the depression. An accomplished debater, Gene met her match when she debated young George C. Hatch. In fact, he was her match and their marriage thrived over 60 years. Together, Gene and George lovingly raised a large family and expanded the Glasmann communication business. From 1955 to 1993, Gene was Director and President of the Standard Corporation which included The Ogden Standard Examiner, KUTV television, KALL radio and many other communication businesses. Gene's active career was arrested by the onset of Alzheimer's disease. For 20 years, Gene struggled with the debilitating disease. George, her children and caregivers tenderly cared for her over the long duration of her sickness. The family is grateful for the kindness of Gene's doctor, Dr. Cherie Brunker; the staff of Hospice, longtime friends Bill and Donna Vogel and Gene's many caregivers. We especially thank Rawlin and Marcia Pinkerman, Jean Taylor, Jeanie Eames and Raquel Luz for many hours of kind and expert care. Gene was born November 28, 1917 in Ogden, Utah, to Abraham Lincoln and Edris Alida Toombs Glasmann. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University and received an Honorary Degree, Doctor of Humanities, in 1981 from Weber State University, Ogden, Utah. Her husband is George C. Hatch, and her children are: Michell Arnow, Orlando, FL; Diane Orr, Salt Lake City, UT; Jeffrey (Peggy) Hatch, Salt Lake City, UT; Randall (Ann) Hatch, Salt Lake City, UT; Deepika Avanti (Carlos Ogsbury) Gold Hill, CO; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Close friends and family are invited to celebrate the gentle and bright life of Gene Hatch on Thursday, June 16 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the home of Jeffrey Hatch. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to support organizations preserving Utah's desert wildlands and groups dedicated to understanding and curing Alzheimer's disease. Thomas, M.D. 1916 ~ 2005 "Having fought a good fight... having finished his course... having kept the faith" Madison Hayball Thomas received orders to report for duty beyond earth's veil on Monday June 6, 2005. He relinquished his tenacious grip on this life after a blessedly brief hospitalization for pneumonia and without the incapacitation which would have so frustrated him. He was always the servant, always the doer, always the believer that one man could tackle even the toughest problems in this world and by so doing, wrestle them down to manageable size. Madison H. Thomas was born on 18 August 1916 to William Preston Thomas and Lucile Hayball Thomas in Ogden Utah. As a youth growing up in Logan, he was high school valedictorian and active in dramatics. At Utah Agricultural College he was elected freshman class president and led the R.O.T.C. regiment with the rank of Cadet Colonel. He later served in the Coast Artillery as a physician during WWII and commanded a thousand-bed Army Reserve Hospital for 10 years, with 42 total years of military service. He graduated in 1943 from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, served an internship at Cornell Medical and completed a master's degree in neurology at the University of Michigan. He married Marian Peterson in the Logan Temple on March 17, 1944. They had five children, three daughters and two sons, and 13 grandchildren. They enjoyed a long and happy life together flying, skiing, hiking, swimming, traveling, studying great books and serving in the Church. She passed away on 20 March 2003. She sustained him throughout his life and he sustained her. What joy in the reunion of these eternal sweethearts! In 1949 he began the practice of neurology in Salt Lake City, serving at several local hospitals as well as in state hospitals in Wyoming and Utah. For over ten years, he was the only board-certified neurologist between Denver and San Francisco. He was active in the Western Institute on Epilepsy, the Western EEG Society, the Epilepsy Foundation of America, the American League Against Epilepsy, the Utah State Driver License Medical Advisory Board, the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists, etc. He was awarded a distinguished service award by the Utah Medical Association and a certificate of appreciation for service to the State of Utah by the governor. He served for many years, until the time of his death, as chairman of medical panels for the Utah Labor Commission. He was active in the Boy Scouts of America, becoming district chairman and later Council Explorer Program Chairman, in which role he took the largest contingent of young men to the National Post Presidents' Conference in Washington D.C. He was an Eagle Scout and was awarded the Silver Beaver. He was a loyal member of the LDS Church and served in numerous positions including the high council, as a teacher and doing genealogy work. He served as mission president with his wife in the England Bristol Mission from 1982 to 1985, as a Temple Square missionary in 1986, and as a public communications missionary in New York City from 1987 to 1988. He is survived by his brothers Bill and Paul, and his children: Christina Van Rye; Gloria Thomas Gilmore and her children: Britta, Stewart, Nathan, and Myra; Daniel (Alison) and their children, Sarah and Taylor; Matthew (Jane) and their children, Clarissa and Madison; and Lisa Thomas Clayton (Weatherford) and their children: Madeleine, Marian, William, Elizabeth, and Laura. He was born July 1, 1942, to Evelyn Reiser and Felix Millard Toone in Salt Lake City, Utah. His seven older sisters eagerly greeted their baby brother and have showered love and affection on him ever since. He grew up in Salt Lake, graduating from South High School in 1960. Millard married Beverlee Bigler in 1962. He has said that the happiest days of his life were the days that each of his six children were born, and has always made each of us feel as if we were capable of achieving anything. He served six years in 5016th US Army Garrison Reserve unit. He worked at Bigler's Speedometer and Appliance, Inkley's Audio Visual and for the last ten years at his family business, Executive Boat and Yacht Brokerage. He loved his time on the water, especially when he captained the whole family on many sunset cruises on Lake Powell. As a diehard Parrot Head, he instilled in his children and grandchildren an appreciation for Jimmy Buffet's music and easy-going attitude and lifestyle. Every time we listen to "Fruitcakes" we will think of him smiling, singing, and dancing along with Jimmy. An outdoorsman of many interests, he enjoyed softball, camping, fishing, riding tractors and motorcycles, and teaching his younger grandkids everything he knew about horses. He loved watching his grandkids participate in soccer games, recitals, horse shows, and family gatherings. He had many good friends and cherished the time he spent with them. Millard never forgot a name or face. He knew a little bit about everything and could fix anything. A life-long member of the LDS church, he served in many capacities, particularly enjoying the times he served as assistant Scout Master and nursery leader. Millard is survived by his children Kimberlee (Ed) Michaud, Kory (Michele) Toone, Bekki Patton, Robyn (Mike) Olesko, Greg (Sharlene) Toone, their mother, Beverlee, and grandchildren Brandi, Dani, Matt, Lauren, Baylee, Nick, Oaklee, and Taylor. He is also survived by sisters Marjorie (Dick) Landeen, Wilma (Bill) Walton, Eileen Toone, Winona Woods, and Marilyn (Don) Gee. Preceded in death by his son Donovan, sisters Miriam Toone and Kathleen Weiser, and his parents. A celebration of Millard's life will be held at Memorial Estates, Mountain View, 3115 E. 7800 S. at 2 p.m. on June 11.Viewing will be held Friday, June 10th from 6-8 p.m. and one hour prior to the funeral (Casual Dress). It was Millard's request that rather than sending flowers, everyone should use the money that they would have spent on flowers to get a colonoscopy - NOW. If his cancer had been detected and treated earlier, we may have had several more years to enjoy with this good man. It goes without saying that we will miss our dad every day, but the important things he taught us will remain with us forever. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 6/9/2005 - 6/10/2005.
