Stevenson and Bertha Starley Stevenson. She married Robert Finch Snedden, the love of her life, on October 10, 1941 in Salt Lake City. Died February 23, 2005 in Walnut Creek, CA. Ester attended Salt Lake City public schools and was a 1934 alumna of East High. She was active in the Thespian Club, the Twittertonians Glee Club and was Society Editor of the Red and Black. Ester then attended the University of Utah, graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree, with a diploma in Elementary Education, in 1938. While at the University, she was vice president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority and was active in the Spurs and Trotters clubs. She devoted her professional life to teaching Kindergarten and First grade in Ephraim, Murray and Salt Lake City while living in Utah and in Sacramento and Concord after moving to California. She was a lifelong member of AAUW and belonged to the California Retired Teachers Association. According to the many notes received from parents of her former students, Ester was an expert in bringing the joy of learning to two generations of five and six-year olds. It would always pleasantly surprise her when a chance encounter with a former student, most of whom she immediately recognized and knew by name, would occur. She was also well loved by her colleagues, many of whom became her dear lifelong friends. Ester loved being with her family and friends. She had a creative nature, loving the Arts, and enjoyed painting, needlework and dancing, especially to Big Band music. While she didn't really care to work in the dirt (unless planting tomatoes), she enjoyed the roses and floral gardens her dear Bob planted for her. A lunch with family or friends followed by the musical theatre or a movie was always a great treat. Ester enjoyed card games, being especially good at Bridge and Poker. She loved socializing and playing with her weekly Bridge groups. She was a bit prone to wanderlust. During her life she traveled throughout North America, Central America, South America, North Africa, Europe, Russia, Asia, various Pacific Islands, New Zealand, Australia and the Caribbean. For some unknown reason, she was not interested in Antarctica. Mostly, she traveled with her dear Bob, but later she went on cruises with her "little" sister and best friend, Betty. She absolutely refused to capitulate to the use of sensible shoes, her cane or suggestions that she might need a hearing aid. Ester is survived by her daughters, Elizabeth, of Healdsburg, CA, Stephanie of Mayhill, NM; granddaughters Adela Luz of Washington, D.C., and Elena Xochitl of Fort Collins, CO; her sister Betty S. Allen of Salt Lake City; She was a loving aunt and great-aunt to many nieces and nephews, especially Jane C. Cox of Walnut Creek, CA; and Vicki Stevenson Mitchell of Springfield, VA, both of whom were loved as daughters. She was preceded in death by her cherished husband Bob, her parents, sisters Maurine S. Holt, Elaine S. Evans, her brothers Vernon, Elbert, Claudius, Ronald, and Victor, her nephews Walter J. and Gerald Michelsen and her niece Julia Elaine M. Oberg. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent in Ester's memory to the Concord Education Foundation (Scholarship Fund), c/o 2165 Brittany Ct., Concord, CA 94518 or the University of Utah Scholarship Campaign to the Department of Education, 800-716-0377 or www.ugive.utah.edu.
