Born Louise Carolyn Ostin, November 21, 1921 in Los Angeles, CA., Carolyn Alter was raised in the heart of Los Angeles and graduated from L.A. High School. She attended the University of Southern California as well as Stanford and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. She married Howard T. Ryan in 1943 and had four children, Patti, Tom, Ramon and Larry. As a devoted mother she spent the majority of her time raising and chauffeuring her children in Los Angeles. She was an active supporter and contributor to the National Charity League and the Los Angeles Philanthropic Society. In 1962, she became an avid sailor and a member of the California Yacht Club where she rose to the challenge of becoming the Senior Executive Officer of the Women's Auxiliary in 1979. In 1981 she concluded her career as homemaker and declared the rearing of her children a success and at the age of 60 took up the sports of skiing, scuba diving and long range cruising. In the following years she built a 54' ketch, Teravanna, and spent her summers sailing with her high school sweetheart, soon to be husband Allan Alter, between the San Juan Islands in Washington state and Anchorage, Alaska. Due to her love and knowledge of sailing and competitions in 1984 she was selected as a judge for the wind surfing events for the Olympics in Los Angeles. In 1985 she built her first of three houses in Park City where she loved the skiing almost as much as she loved the pace and sense of community that she found here. She became a lifetime supporter of the Egyptian Theater and served on the board as treasurer of the Park City Community Church during the time of its ground breaking and construction at its present location on Highway 224. Her wanderlust caused her to purchase a house on Flat Head Lake in Montana with Allan where they spent their summers sailing their Cal 22. During the last 23 years of her life, when not sailing or skiing she was usually traveling around the world with Allan via their favorite mode of world travel, freighters. In 1999 she moved to Orcas Island, WA. Where she lived until Allan's death in 2003. She then moved across the country to Pensacola, FL. Until driven out by hurricanes last year and returned to Park City. Carolyn is survived by her four children, Patti (Chuck) Saccio of Park City, UT; Tom (Susan Miller) Malibu, CA; Dr. Ramon (Carolyn) Ryan, Milton, FL; and Larry Ryan, Brentwood, CA. Her grandchildren, Traci (Dennis) Smith, Park City, UT; Poett (Rodolfo) Ryan Carboni, Costa Rica; Christopher (Francesca) Soberon, Park City, UT; and Morgan Ryan, Elijah Worley Soberon and Dylan Soberon. Funeral Services will be held at the Park City Community Church on Saturday, April 2, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow at the Park City Cemetery. Arnold, Michael Michael Arnold Happy Birthday I thought of you with love today, but that is nothing new. I thought about you yesterday and days before that too. I think of you in silence, I often speak your name. All I have are memories and your picture in a frame. Your memory is my keepsake with which I will never part. God has you in his keep, I have you in my heart. Love and miss you, Sheri Published in the Salt Lake Tribune on 3/31/2005. Briest, Margie Jacobs Nelson Margie Jacobs Nelson Briest 1906 ~ 2005 God's finger touched her and she slipped away from earth's dark shadows to a brighter day. He saw the road was rough, and the hill was hard to climb and so he gently closed her eyes and whispered "Peace be Thine". God took her to a better place, where she would have only peace and love behind the golden door. She is home. Margie Jacobs Nelson Briest was born September 10, 1906 in Sandovall, Illinois to Laura Stonecipher and Walter Jacobs. She had many wonderful stories of traveling from Illinois to Utah in a covered wagon with her family. Our Mother had a great sense of humor and a quick wit. She liked going on picnics, making quilts, crocheting and embroidering on kitchen towels, but most of all, she liked "holding babies". If someone would mention, "lets go", she would have her bags packed. She lived in many places in Utah, but loved being in Helper and was there over 40 years. Her happiest memories of growing up were in Skull Valley. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She held different positions over the years and later went through the temple. Surviving family members include Bonnie (Leo) Paur, West Valley, Barbara (Ruben) Maldonato, Salt Lake, Nick (Joyce) Nelson, Elk Ridge, Don (Elaine) Nelson, Provo, Madeline (Charles) Bonomo, Salt Lake, Marilyn (Boyd) Bell, Price, Arlene (Ken) Roberson, St. George, Sheri (Paul) Reay, Provo, Steve (Barbara) Briest, St. George. She was a sixth generation grandmother with 212 posterity. Funeral services will be Saturday, April 2, 2005, at 12 noon, in the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, 646 East 800 North, Orem. He was Mr. Fix it Man to the children in his South Salt Lake neighborhood. Ready to fix a bike tire or tighten screws on a wagon or scooter. As his great-grandson Anthony said, "he can fix anything". Ray was an avid fisherman and spent much of his summers at Snow's Marina on Deer Creek Reservoir. He made many long lasting friendships at Snow's. To Gwen Mitchell NP of the Veterans Admin. Home Services, much gratitude for the years of excellent care given to Ray. Thanks to Care Source Hospice, and Wasatch Rehab for the compassionate care given, making his final months comfortable. Ray's express wish was for cremation and no services. Two of our boys were called back "Home", leaving a lingering void in our hearts. Life is tenuous and we cherished them while they were with us. We will always love and miss Aaron and J.R. Mom, Dad and Brother Rick Published in the Salt Lake Tribune on 3/31/2005. Morrell, William John (Bill) William John (Bill) Morrell 1/4/1917 ~ 3/29/2005 I was born January 4, 1917 in Ophir, Utah to the best Italian parents any child could ever have. My father's name was Giovanni Sabatino Morelli and my mother's name was Concettina Vernucci Morelli. My uncle Guido Vernucci came to Utah when I was born and named me William John Morrell, which in Italian translates to Guglielmo Giovanni Morelli. The Italian name, Guglielmo led to my nickname "Yamo" I liked that name, and it stayed with me long after I left high school and into my baseball and softball years. From 1934 - 1938 I played baseball for the town of Ophir. In 1939, I coached all of my sisters on the Ophir girls softball team. In May of 1940, I tried out for the Philadelphia Phillies baseball team at the position of center field; however, I did not make the team. On December 26, 1941, I enlisted in the Army and was honorably discharged in 1946. In 1940 I met my future wife, Nella Maroon. I served on the Board of Directors of the Salt Lake chapter of the American Red Cross, The American Association of Retired Person, National Council of Senior Citizens, served as a coordinator of Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees Chapters 38-2 and 38-4 and the Political Action Committee of the United Steelworkers of America. I was a member of St. Ann's Men's Club and ran the bingo committee for 19 years at St. Ann's, was a member of St. Ann's Pastoral Council for nine years along with being an usher for 37 years. I was a Union President at Kennecott Copper and a member of Who's Who in the West. I was extremely proud of my Italian heritage and always looked forward to making fruitcakes and Italian cookies with my daughter at Christmas.
