He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, he was decorated several times, and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He later served in the Army Reserve from which he officially retired in 1972 with the rank of Colonel. Following World War II, he worked for the Veteran's Administration in Sacramento, California until 1950. In 1952, before he received his degree in Social Work, he began assisting his brother, Howard Valentine, who had established Western States Refining Company. In Salt Lake they enjoyed the friends they made through the Fort Douglas Officers Club, Ambassador Athletic Club, Fort Douglas Country Club, Gyro, and in California, the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club. His daughter, Nancy, wrote a history of his life based on interviews she did with him from 2002 until 2004. What mattered most to him was his family. No one could have been more generous, especially with his love and this love was returned by all of them. The highlights of his life were meeting Mary Merrell (she always remained the most interesting person he ever knew); serving as captain of the Box Elder High Basketball Team; his World War II service; lawn bowling in Laguna Beach, and the many good friends he made along the way: Clayte and Ruth Cheney, Dick and Bernice Jensen, Chapin and Jean Day, Gordon and Norma Loveless and the good neighbors at Forest Glen Condominium's. Special friends in California are Hank and Dorothy Benedict and Kay Marcom who were all so kind to him during his last years in Laguna. Gordon Loveless and Grant shared so many interests. They were as close as two friends could be and great competitors playing Liar's Poker. Always an avid reader, Grant followed faithfully current events and basketball on television. The family wished to thank Laguna Beach doctors William Nelson and Harry Bruce and the staff at Saddle Back Hospital for the excellent and thoughtful care they provided at the end of his life. A celebration of his life will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish, to make a contribution to their favorite charity, or to the Friends of the Marriott Library, University of Utah, 84112, or Hospice of Saddle Back Valley, 24044 Calle De La Plata, #200, Laguna Hills, CA 92653.
