Allred, Mabel Finlayson Mabel Finlayson Allred 1919 ~ 2005 Born on January 11, 1919, a "blue baby" and a twin during the World War I influenza epidemic, Mabel spent her first moments in an oven being 'warmed up'. And how she warmed up to life! She lived with a passion for beauty and a remarkable capacity for unconditional love. She survived rheumatic fever, a sensitive nature, and raids by the FBI, and, like Thoreau, spent a night in jail for her convictions. She walked in grace, celebrating life and seeing always the best in others, including her parents, Reginald Patrick Finlayson and Ettie Josephine Hanson, her sisters Birdie (Covington) and Carol (Lloyd Sullivan) and Melba (her twin and her sister-wife) and her brother (David Reginald). The love of her life was her husband, Dr. Rulon C. Allred, who shared her delight in people and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She lavished her children, David Laddie (Terry), Joseph Laurie (Julie), Jared Rulon (Joanne), Dorothy Jeanne Solomon (Bruce), Gary Stephen (Bonnie), Robbie Marcus (Kayleen), with love and respect, bestowing a legacy of personal freedom. She showered each of her 25 grandchildren with individual appreciation. Her 13 great- grandchildren know that in Grandma Mabel's kingdom, even "little people" matter, perhaps most of all. Her romantic spirit, expressed through her piano playing at weddings, church services, musical productions, and radio recordings, lives on in her many students, in our hearts, and in paradise where she walks now with loved ones who passed on before her. She was truly an elect lady, who continued to grow throughout her life. After 65 years as the pianist of the Allred polygamous group, she re-embraced her membership in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and visited the LDS temple soon after her 84th birthday. She passed away peacefully on May 6, 2005 at 6:30 a.m., due to complications following surgery. Though she will be missed, her love will abide. We will celebrate her life and comfort one another at a viewing on Tuesday, May 10, 2005, from 7 to 9 p.m. Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple, Salt Lake City, and on Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at a brief viewing (9:00-9:45 a.m.) followed by the funeral at 10:00 a.m. at the Millcreek Eighth Ward, 4600 South 600 East. The graveside service takes place at Larkin Sunset Lawn Cemetery, 2350 East 1300 South, at 1:00 p.m. Published in the Salt Lake Tribune from 5/8/2005 - 5/9/2005. During his University of Utah years he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha and R.O.T.C. Following his graduation he did post graduate work at the University of Southern California. Later, in 1952, he received a master's degree from the Graduate School of Social Work at the University of Utah. From 1935-1940 he was a social worker, a school teacher, and served in the National Guard. On March 3, 1941, all members of the National Guard were activated. He served in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, he was decorated several times, and was discharged in 1945 with the rank of Lt. Colonel. He later served in the Army Reserve from which he officially retired in 1972 with the rank of Colonel. Following World War II, he worked for the Veteran's Administration in Sacramento, California until 1950. In 1952, before he received his degree in Social Work, he began assisting his brother, Howard Valentine, who had established Western States Refining Company. This led to Grant establishing his oil jobbing, trucking company, and service station business which he maintained from the 1950s into the 1970s. From the 1960s on he and Mary traveled extensively - through North and South America, Europe, Asia, and parts of Africa. Freighters were their favorite mode of travel which often meant being at sea for several months. From 1960 on, he and Mary spent a great deal of time in Laguna Beach where they owned a condominium overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In Salt Lake they enjoyed the friends they made through the Fort Douglas Officers Club, Ambassador Athletic Club, Fort Douglas Country Club, Gyro, and in California, the Laguna Beach Lawn Bowling Club. His daughter, Nancy, wrote a history of his life based on interviews she did with him from 2002 until 2004. What mattered most to him was his family. No one could have been more generous, especially with his love and this love was returned by all of them. The highlights of his life were meeting Mary Merrell (she always remained the most interesting person he ever knew); serving as captain of the Box Elder High Basketball Team; his World War II service; lawn bowling in Laguna Beach, and the many good friends he made along the way: Clayte and Ruth Cheney, Dick and Bernice Jensen, Chapin and Jean Day, Gordon and Norma Loveless and the good neighbors at Forest Glen Condominium's. Special friends in California are Hank and Dorothy Benedict and Kay Marcom who were all so kind to him during his last years in Laguna. Gordon Loveless and Grant shared so many interests. They were as close as two friends could be and great competitors playing Liar's Poker. Always an avid reader, Grant followed faithfully current events and basketball on television. The family wished to thank Laguna Beach doctors William Nelson and Harry Bruce and the staff at Saddle Back Hospital for the excellent and thoughtful care they provided at the end of his life. A celebration of his life will be held at Wasatch Lawn Mortuary, Monday, May 9 at 2 p.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family asks those who wish, to make a contribution to their favorite charity, or to the Friends of the Marriott Library, University of Utah, 84112, or Hospice of Saddle Back Valley, 24044 Calle De La Plata, #200, Laguna Hills, CA 92653.
