He celebrated 77 years of marriage to Quma Lavina Larsen who survives him. At the time of his death, they were believed to be the oldest living married couple in Utah. He is survived by four children; daughter, Carroll Benson, Sedona, Arizona; son, Sherman O. Anderson (wife Marlene), Sandy, UT; daughter, Sally Whiting (husband Pete)Whiting, Billings, Montana; and John B. Anderson, Salt Lake City, UT. He was also the proud grandfather to 16 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Oscar was born in Glenwood, Utah, on September 20, 1907, the son of Andrew Anderson and Caroline Melisa Hansen, deceased. He is survived by a sister, Shirley Roberts and was preceded in death by brothers, Earl Andrew, Ole La V on and Valentine Anderson. Oscar lived in Richfield, Utah before until moving to Salt Lake City. He had many a fond memories of herding sheep for his father on the Fish Lake Range while living in Glenwood, UT. He was proud of a pioneer cabin that he carefully numbered and reconstructed in the West Hills to establish a homestead which still stands today. A self-taught carpenter he worked on several homes and buildings in the Salt Lake area including the State Capitol, St. Ann's Orphanage and the University of Utah. He later designed and built the family home in his spare time. His carpentry was of such fine quality that he did the finish carpentry on a Trans-Pacific racing (sailing) yacht. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening but his family always came first and he will be dearly missed. Although he suffered from cancer for several years he survived to take care of Quma and when he could no longer do so he decided to continue his journey. The family wishes to thank all those at Woodland Park Care Center and Odyssey Hospice who helped Oscar at this most difficult time. Archuleta, Peggy Sue (Mauss) Peggy Sue (Mauss) Archuleta 1958 ~ 2005 Left us unexpectedly May 7, 2005. She was born on January 26, 1958 in Cocoa Beach FL. She was greatly loved and will most sadly be missed. She was survived by her husband Razz" Archuleta, her father Raymond (Beverly) Mauss, her five children, Joey (Tina), Anita, Anthony (Anna) Archuleta, Mike Hoiseth, and Adrian Morreno; two sisters Sherri Ashworth and Terri (AI) Moya, seven grandchildren Elicia, Faustino, Robert, Matthew, Tasia, Anthony, and Issac. As well as many aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews. She will be missed by all that knew her. Ashworth Jr., Rulon Clyde Rulon Clyde Ashworth, Jr. 1919 ~ 2005 Rulon Clyde Ashworth, Jr. passed away May 11, 2005. Born, Dec. 29, 1919 to Rulon Clyde Ashworth, Sr. and Josephine G. Millard. He married Beth Barber in 1942, later divorced. He married Shirley Simpson in 1967. He was president and owner of Ashworth Transfer. He served two years as president and two years as chairman of the American Trucking Association. Clyde was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully. He is survived by wife, Shirley; sons, Gene (Karlene), Jim (Joni), Boyd (Patti) Ashworth; daughters, Colleen (John) McDonald, Janet (Robin) Keyworth, Eileen (Steve) Romney; 32 grandchildren; 37 great-grand children; brother, Glen Ashworth; step-children, Jerry Simpson, Dennis (Becky) Simpson, and Janet (Richard) Hayes; Preceded in death by son, Paul. Burningham, George Leland (Lee) George Leland (Lee) Burningham 1931 ~ 2005 KAYSVILLE - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and patriarch, passed away the evening of May 10, 2005, at the age of 74, following a valiant fight with prolonged illnesses. He was born on January 9, 1931 in Salt Lake City to George Leland Burningham and Ina Smith. He grew up in Bountiful and Holladay, Utah. He loved playing basketball and enjoyed playing varsity basketball at Granite High School, where he excelled despite limited use of his right arm due to a break suffered in a childhood horseback riding accident. He was sealed to Emily McDonald in the Salt Lake Temple by his uncle Joseph Fielding Smith on June 21, 1950. An athlete and three degree graduate of the University of Utah, he received his doctorate degree in Education. He was an educator and public servant all of his life. He served in the Granite and Murray school districts, and in the Weber County School District, where he created the Weber School District Educational Foundation, pioneering private funding and community support of public school initiatives. He culminated his career as the Utah State Superintendent of Public Instruction where he continued to work tirelessly for the welfare of Utah students. He also served in the Far West Lab, as a consultant for McConnell Ralston Davis at Stanford University, and as a member of President Reagan's Council on Public Education. He also served in the Utah State House of Representatives. He was active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding numerous callings including bishop, high counselor, and other stake and ward leadership positions. His educational background aided in his service on the General Sunday School Board and Curriculum Committee of the Church. The love of his life was missionary work. Following an early retirement, he served proscelyting missions with his dear wife as his companion in the Tahiti, Papeete Mission, and the Zaire, Kinshasa Mission, where they were privileged to be the first missionaries in the Republic of the Congo, Brazzaville. They also served CES missions to Fiji and in Davis County. They later served in the Washington D.C. Temple. His family was his treasure. He loved to have his extended family around him where he could teach and share his testimony with them. He is survived by his wife, Emily, and children, Lee (Zan) Burningham, Bruce (Kim) Burningham, Marilyn (Kent) Critchlow, Janet (Steve) Rose, Brenda (Blaine) Fowler, Brent (Debbie) Burningham, 28 grand children and 16 great-grandchildren with four more soon to arrive, and siblings, Norman (Barbara) Burningham, Kathy Wilson, and sister-in-law, Peggy (Paul) Burningham. He is preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Barbara Burningham Izatt, and brother, Paul Burningham. Degles, George George Degles 1924 ~ 2005 George Degles, age 80, passed May 9th, 2005 in his sleep at home in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was born July 20th, 1924 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Nicholas and Kula Degles. He married Shirley J. Leonis, September 11, 1977 and from that day on never left her side. All of us close to him called him "Georgie Porgie." His zest for life, adventure zeal, and the love for Shirley made for a wonderful and exciting life. Georgie was an avid fisherman his whole life, an excellent skier up to last season, and a darn good golfer. He served his country and was a Sergeant in the Marines in World War II. He later joined the US Army and served for 27 years retiring as a Major. He worked as a buyer for Cystron Donner Electronics out of CA. He was a factory rep in Salt Lake City until his full retirement. Georgie and Shirley were fortunate enough to be able to travel the world over. Georgie will be deeply missed. His way of making everyone he met smile, his little songs from the past, and his very down to earth dry sense of humor were truly one of a kind. Hansen, Caroline Astin Caroline Astin Hansen 1908 ~ 2005 Caroline Astin Hansen passed away peacefully in her home Tuesday, May 10, 2005 surrounded by her family. She was 97. Caroline was born to Dario Robles and Mary Janet Donaldson Astin Feb. 6, 1908 in El Paso, Texas. Following her mother's death, she was lovingly raised by her Uncle William and Aunt Amy Donaldson of Springville. She graduated from East High School in 1926. Caroline was married to Mark James Hansen on November 14, 1928 in Nephi, Utah and later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on November 14, 1932. They made their home in Palmyra, Utah where they lived 77 years. Caroline loved the community and beautiful farmland of Palmyra where she enjoyed gardening, and raising her family of seven. She also enjoyed sewing, music, singing, cooking, reading, and traveling. Caroline was a life long member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many teaching and leadership positions. She loved and appreciated the Church and the Gospel for the comfort it offered throughout her life. Caroline is preceded in death by her husband; son, Duane Hansen; four grandsons: Randy Blunt, Bradley Hansen, Joel Johnson, Michael Lawrence; and son-in-law, Ralph Blunt. She leaves behind six children: Irene Blunt of Salt Lake City, Janet (Larry) Lawrence of Bountiful, Phyllis (Paul) Ashton of Tustin, California, George (Nancy) Hansen of Salt Lake City, Carolyn (Sam) Johnson of Lyman, Wyoming, Laura (Randy) Carter of Palmyra; 40 grandchildren, 117 great-grandchildren, and 38 great-great-grandchildren. Jacketta, Margje de Jong Margje de Jong Jacketta "Margaret" Margje de Jong Jacketta, age 92, passed away May 10, 2005 at her daughter's home in South Jordan, Utah, from causes of aging. She was born April 4, 1913 in the Netherlands, one of eleven children, to Cornelis and Adriana Versteeg de Jong. Immigrated to the United States in 1922 and lived in Salt Lake City most of her life. Married Antonio "Tony" Jacketta March 25, 1931 in Ogden, Utah; marriage solemnized February 9, 1961 in the Salt Lake Temple. He preceded her in death April 7, 1994 after having shared 63 years together. She was an active member of the LDS Church all her life and held many leadership positions. She had an immediate love for any animal. There was a special area in the house for weak, sick, orphaned or homeless animals that were cared for with warmth and love. Everyone was always welcome in her home. Thank you, Mom, you've been there for each one of us. Your wisdom, strength and help showed us how much you cared. You will never be gone from our memories. She is survived by two sons and three daughters: Tony (Karen), James (Christine), West Valley City; Jeanine (Jim) Goodrich, South Salt Lake; Marjorie Davis, Magna; Rosalie (Tom) Hardcastle, South Jordan; brother, Adrian de Jong, Farmington; 27 grandchildren; 60 1/2 great-grand-children; 16 great-great-grand-children. Johnson, Norman Clyde Norman Clyde Johnson 1940 ~ 2005 HEBER CITY / FLAGSTAFF - Norman Clyde Johnson, of Flagstaff for 35 years, died in his home on Tuesday, May 10th, 2005. He was 64. He was born on August 24th, 1940 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was raised in Heber City where he graduated from Wasatch High. He was married on November 28th, 1959 to Lynette Peterson. Their marriage was solemnized on the same date one year later in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple. After attending college at the University of Utah where he majored in Business Management, he began his career in pharmaceutical sales in Tucson Arizona. Following his heart and his passion, Norm purchased Clark's Sporting Goods in Flagstaff in 1969 and soon after changed the name to The Village Sports Den. As Chairman of the Citizen's Committee to keep the Arizona Snow Bowl open, he was heavily involved in the ecological, political and environmental battles that ensued over the next four years. As the President of Northland Recreation, Norm submitted a comprehensive 10-year master plan to the United States Forest Service that included the construction of lodges, maintenance facilities, and five additional chair lifts. During the following eight years, he fought a legal battle that included nine appeals reaching the Secretary of Agriculture in Washington D.C. and ultimately prevailed. After selling the Arizona Snow Bowl, he was involved with many other real estate and development activities in the Flagstaff area including Circle G, Walnut Canyon, Walnut Ridge and Pine Canyon. He was an avid outdoorsman enjoying scuba diving, kayaking, flying, riding motor cross and ATV, hiking, skiing, boating, and his life's passion, golf. He loved life, family and God. He is survived by his father, one brother and two sisters, his wife of 45 years, Lynette, three children, Lori Marick, Barry and Brad Johnson and 13 grandchildren. His mother and younger brother precede him in death. "Today the world cries and heaven rejoices". Laurel was born August 6, 1945 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Lawrence Quibell and Lenora Quibell. She married Lyle Kilpatrick on December 3, 1960, they were married for 43 years before they were divorced. Laurel was a loving mother, grandmother and sister, who will be missed for a long time. She loved gardening and bingo. Mom loved all of her children and grandchildren. She always had a shoulder to lean on, and always tried to do what was best for those she loved. We know she will be joined with her mother and father who have passed before her. Laurel is survived by her daughters, Julie and Susan; son, Lyle; stepfather, Merlin Yeates; sister, Benee; brother, Larry and half brother, Frank; nine grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and Aunt Nona. He married Laurel Quibell on December 3, 1960, they were married 43 years when they divorced. Dad we love you very much and miss you. We lost you, but you will always live in our hearts. Lyle was loved and respected by many people. His grandchildren will miss going to church with him. His children have forgiven the mistakes that were made. Potter, Alfred (Al) Alfred (Al) Potter 1931 ~ 2005 Alfred (Al) Potter died April 22, 2005 at the Veterans Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah of complications due to age while surrounded by his loved ones. Alfred was born May 15, 1931 to Charlie and Kate Kofford Potter. He was raised in Boneta, Duchesne County. Al served as a U.S. Marine in the Korean War and was the recipient of the Purple Heart award and numerous other military decorations. After the war Al began driving 18-wheelers cross-country. He continued in this profession until he retired. Alfred is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He married Leona V. Salt in 1956 (divorced). They were the parents of four children: Katherine Oliai, California; Julia Potter, Salt Lake; Ernest W., Salt Lake; and Sharla (Dave) Torgerson, Salt Lake. Alfred has 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Al later married Jean Binkard (divorced). He spent the later years of his life with his wife Bonnie (Nita). The couple lived in Fielding and Vernal, where they loved to fish in the High Unitas. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, as well as his brothers; Carl and Warnel and his sister Pauline Hadden. Her husband Joseph Hadden and his children have remained close to Alfred and his family. The family is preparing a private memorial service. He was born Dec. 4, 1922 to Joseph T. Sargetakis and Despina Vasilakis Sargetakis. Married Kaliope Katsanevas on 5/19/57. Steve's greatest accomplishment was the life he led despite the hardships he faced. Born in the coal mining camps of Castle Gate, UT, one of five children, to immigrant parents. Raised by their widowed mother and taught many values by his uncle Mike. Sold newspapers at a young age to help the family income during the Great Depression. Graduated from West High School in 1940. Joined the Merchant Marines in 1942 until 1948, serving during World War II, sailing around the world over three times. Seeking to become an employer and not an employee, he and his three brothers founded Silver State Suppliers in 1952. The company continues to grow, operated by his wife, Kaliope, and their three sons. He was an active member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Proud of his Cretan Heritage, he was a member of the Minos Chapter/Pan Cretan Assoc. One of his fondest accomplishments was being a founding trustee of the Hellenic Cultural Assoc/Museum. Rich in values he inspired others with his loyalty, integrity, fairness and love for America. Always a friend to the "little guy" he never forgot his humble beginning. He enjoyed time spent with family members, especially his children, grandchildren and nieces and nephews. His great fondness for people was heavily seasoned with his wry sense of humor. The family wishes to thank: St. Joseph's Villa, Caresource, Gloria Turpin and especially Freida Cecil, who gave Dad the love and dignity that his illness couldn't take away. Shurtliff, Ferne Webster Ferne Webster Shurtliff 1924 ~ 2005 OREM - Our beloved Wife, Mother and Grandmother, Ferne Webster Shurtliff, 80, peacefully passed away May 10th, 2005, at her home in Orem, Utah Ferne was born Nov. 30, 1924, in Loa, Utah, to William Fredrick and Amy Cedena Carrell Webster. She grew up in Wayne County, moving to Salt Lake City with her family when she was 19 years old. She graduated from Wayne High School and Snow College. Ferne served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Texas/Louisiana from 1946-1948. She married David Dean Shurtliff in the Salt Lake Temple Sept. 14, 1948 - They enjoyed 56 wonderful years together. She was a dedicated, active member of the LDS Church and served in many stake and ward capacities including Ward Young Women's President and Ward and Stake Primary President. Ferne worked at Timpview High School as a secretary in the attendance office for 12 years and thought it a very choice experience. She loved family activities and especially enjoyed boating and trailering with her family and spending time at the family cabin. She spent many wonderful winters in St. George, Utah, with her husband and also enjoyed many great trips through her husband's employment. Grandchildren will cherish countless backyard memories. She enjoyed knitting and crocheting and made many beautiful afghans and baby quilts for her family and friends. Ferne is survived by her husband, Dave; children, David (Wendy) Shurtliff, Draper, Jan (Dave) Jensen, Farmington, Lane (Linda) Shurtliff, Orem, all of Utah, sister, Romona Smith. Her father and mother, and sisters, Maude Hunger, Phyllis King, and Freeda Brailsford preceded her in death. Smith, Robert Ray Robert Ray Smith "Bob" Robert Ray Smith passed away May 10, 2005 in Salt Lake City, surrounded by his loving family. He was born March 10, 1931 to Ray F. and Ethel Naylor Smith. Married Annette Hudson September 16, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. Bob retired after many years as a route salesman. He also served 35 years in the Air National Guard as a member of the Strategic Air Command151st. Bob was an avid hunter and loved his annual deer hunting trip. He also loved to sing and was the president of his church choir. He is survived by his wife, Annette; children, Curt (Joanne), Don E., Robbianne (Ray) Ferber; grandchildren, Anthony, Mason, Mackenzie, Chantil, Christil, Kailey, and Chyanne; great-grandson, Jayden; Brothers and sisters: Dick (dec.)(Karyn),Wayne (Sharen), Brent (Kim); Donna Jeanne(dec.)(Glen), Shirley (Dave), Carole (Craig). Walton, Kent Allen Kent Allen Walton 1940 ~ 2005 Kent Allen Walton, age 64, of Tooele, Utah, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2005. Kent was born on December 10, 1940 to Elmar and Ethel Carter Walton. He married Tyla Johnson on December 24, 1974 in Elko, Nevada. Kent is survived by his wife, Tyla; daughter Danielle (Adam); and two granddaughters Rebekah and Samantha; and his mother; two sisters and a brother. He was preceded in death by his father. Weichers 1914 ~ 2005 Our beloved Clarence Weichers, age 90, passed away peacefully on May 10, 2005, surrounded by his wife, children, and grandchildren. Clarence was born September 18, 1914, to Eldredge Lawrence (Sharkey) and Annie Carruth Weichers. He married Orlene Olsen, who lived across the street on February 20, 1935. They recently celebrated their 70th anniversary. He will forever be remembered for his love of family. He cheered everyone up with his positive spirit and inexhaustible supply of funny stories. He is renown for his love of golf even until his 88th year. He has the unusual achievement of eight holes-in-one in his lifetime. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for 38 years. As a dispatcher, he made many lifelong friends. He became active in the LDS Church in the early 1960's and was sealed to his sweetheart and family in the Salt Lake Temple. At the time of his passing he was a High Priest in the Monument Park 5th Ward. He is survived by his wife, Orlene; his children, Merrill (Rosemary) Weichers of Orange, CA, Mike (Suki) Weichers of Draper, and Sheri (Steve) Kettle of Salt Lake City. He was also very proud of his 18 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren. His father and mother preceded him in death. Zuercher, Delma Delma Roth Zuercher 8/ 21/14 ~ 5/12/05 Delma Zuercher, an active member for many years of the First Baptist Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on May 12, 2005. She was surrounded by the love of her daughter and son in-law. Prior to her death, she had visits from her son and daughter in-law as well as grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Delma was born in Shickley, Nebraska to William W. Roth and Kathryn Birkey. She lived most of her life in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her last years were spent in Nampa, Idaho, with her sister, Esther, and many friends and family. She ended her days on earth at the home of her daughter, Carolyn. Delma married Robert Nile Zuercher on May 7, 1934 in Nampa, ID. They moved to Salt Lake City, UT in 1946. Robert preceded her in death in 1978. Also preceding her in death were her parents and sisters, Edna and Esther. Delma is survived by her children, Robert C. Zuercher and his wife, Carol; and her daughter, Carolyn M. Nepstad and her husband, Jim. Also surviving her are seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews, all who loved and cared for her dearly. One of Delma's greatest pleasures in life was being a grandmother. She and husband, Bob, spent some of their happiest times traveling in their motor home to the homes of their children and grandchildren. Delma's hobbies included bowling and one of the highlights of her career was bowling a 700 Series at the age of 63. Delma will be remembered for her great strength and love for her family. A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 14, at 2:00 pm. at Wasatch Memorial Lawn Cemetery, 3401 Highland Dr., Salt Lake City UT.
