During his early years he was raised by his grandmother Maria Paulina Bissegger Wale, whom he dearly loved. Following his mother's divorce and marriage to John Sanford "Jack" Hemming, the family moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Leon attended Granite High School in Salt Lake City and as a young man developed a passion for golf. He enjoyed many afternoons and weekends at the Nibley Park Golf Course and the Bonneville Golf Course with his brother Wally and friends. After graduation he took employment at the American Smelting and Refining Company in Magna, Utah. He met the love of his life, Ruth Oviatt, at Utah's famed Lagoon resort in Farmington and they married in 1943. They had three children: Richard, Janet and Shauna. During World War II, Leon helped America's war effort by working for the Boeing Airplane Company in Seattle, Washington as a mechanic. After the war, the family settled in Southern California at Huntington Park where Leon worked as a valued sales executive with the Detroit-based Fruehauf Trailer Company. The family moved to the San Francisco Bay area in 1951 settling in Hayward, California where Leon became owner of the San Leandro Trucking Company. For more than 25 years, he was a major supplier of refined oil to regional asphalt manufacturers, playing a role in the housing and highway boom that accompanied California's population explosion in the 50s, 60s and 70s. Dad always balanced hard work with golf and frequent family trips and vacations to Disneyland, Carmel, Palm Springs, Mendocino and Utah. His favorite pastime was playing golf at Castlewood Country Club in Pleasanton, Calif. His mastery of the game was rewarded with two holes in one and a two handicap. He was well-loved, jovial and good-natured and helped others see the positive side of life. He loved his family and will be remembered as a generous and loving father and husband. Speaking on behalf of the grandchildren, grandson Christian recalled Leon as a "golf instructor and tinkerer, family man and wrestler. Well known and loved as a familiar face by chefs and waiters from the Hickory Pit to the Lanai. A perennial joker and rascal, he never hesitated to share a bite of dessert with a waiter or a bit of advice with "the wheel." Revered at the track for his uncanny luck and around the green for his graceful chip-shot. Well, this is our last farewell, and we can imagine his watery eyes, and sensitive generosity brimming as we part. He truly is going to heaven in a chariot. Goodbye grandpa."
