SYLVESTER QUAYLE CANNON, presiding bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints at Salt Lake City, has had a very interesting career as an engineer, business man and church official and is a worthy son of a father who was one of Utah's most distinguished characters. Sylvester Quayle Cannon was born at Salt Lake City June 10, 1877. His mother was Elizabeth Hoagland, whose parents, Abraham and Margaret (Quick) Hoagland, came to Utah as pioneers on October 3, 1847. Sylvester Quayle Cannon attended private schools, continued his education in the Latter Day Saint's College and by special courses in the University of Utah. In 1899 he received the Bachelor of Science degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. After two years as president of a church mission in the Netherlands and Belgium he returned to Salt Lake City to engage in practice as an engineer and during 1905-07 was in charge of hydrographic work in the office of the state engineer. He was again president of the Netherlands-Belgium mission from 1907 to 1909 and from 1909 to 1912 engaged in general engineering practice at Salt Lake. In 1912 he was made engineer of water supply and in 1913 city engineer, a post he held until 1925. He is a former president of the Utah Society of Engineers and a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Mr. Cannon is president of the Cannon Investment Company, a director of the Zion's Cooperative Mercantile Institution and Utah Hotel Company and is president of the Radio Service Corporation which owns the KSL broadcasting station. Mr. Cannon was formerly president of the Pioneer Stake, one of the divisions of the church in Salt Lake City, and since 1925 has been presiding bishop, with headquarters at Salt Lake City. He is a president of the Dr. W. H. Groves Latter-day Saint's Hospital, president of the Dee Memorial Hospital at Ogden, president of the Latter-day Saint's Hospital at Idaho Falls, Idaho, is president of the board of trustees of the Latter-day Saint's Business College of Salt Lake, president of the McCune School of Music and Art and president of the Zion's Aid Society, is a member of the Timpanogos and Salt Lake Commercial Clubs. Mr. Cannon married, June 15, 1904, Miss Winnifred Saville. Her father, the late James W. Saville, came to Utah from England in 1863. The seven children of their marriage are: Julion Saville, Elinor, Winfield Quayle, Sylvia, Lawrence Saville, Lucile and Donald James.
