Marvel Matilda Lay was born August 6, 1897 at Vernal, Uintah, Utah to William 
Ellsworth (Elzy) Lay and Matilda Maud Davis, their only child. Soon after her 
birth, her mother and father divorced and she went with her mother to live 
with her mother's parents. 

Found in the 1900 census living at Vernal, Uintah, Utah: Allen W Davis 58, 
Matilda Davis 48, Albert L Davis 27 (born Nov 1872 Utah), Frank E Davis 21 
(born Jan 1879 Utah), Florence B Davis 18 (born June 1881 Utah), Iva C Davis 
15 (born May 1885 Utah), Guy A Davis 8 (born July 1891 Utah), Oran L Curry 36 
(born November 1863 Kentucky, son in law, married 2 years, day laborer), 
Matilda M Curry 25, Marvel Lay 2 (says he is a grandson but think he was 
female, born August 1897), Oran E Curry 5/12 (5 months) (grandson born 
December 1899, Utah), George M Robinson 83 (father in law, miller), Matilda 
Robinson 75 (mother in law). 

Marvel's mother Maud remarried two more times but both spouses died before 
1910. Found mother Maud and her children in the 1910 census again with her 
parents at Vernal, Uinta, Utah: Allen Davis 68, Matilda A Davis 58, Guy Davis 
18, Maud Mcdougall 35, Edward Mcdougall 2, Marvel Curry (should be Lay) 12, 
Oran Curry 10, Allen L Curry 8 .

Marvel married Joseph Thomas (Joe Bush) Murdock on July 1, 1918 at Heber City, 
Wasatch, Utah. The couple had 7 children.

Couple found in the 1920 census living at Hanna, Duchesne, Utah: Joe T Murdock 
34, Marvel Murdock 22, Audrey Murdock 0[8/12], Wilson Dean 35, Roy Murdock 18. 

Found in the 1930, 1940 censuses at Heber, Wasatch, Utah: 
1930: Joseph F Murdock 45, Marvel Murdock 32, Don Murdock 6, Harvey Murdock 4 
8/12, Robert Murdock 1 5/12, Matilda Atwood 55. 1940: Joseph T Murdoch 55, 
Marvel M Murdoch 42, Don Murdoch 16, Harvey L Murdoch 14, Robert G Murdoch 11, 
Allen D Murdoch 9. 

Marvel Matilda Lay Murdock died November 25, 1983 at Heber City, Wasatch, Utah 
and is buried at the cemetery there.

Marvel Lay Murdock was born August 6, 1897 in Vernal, Uintah County [Utah], 
the daughter of William [Ellsworth] and Maud Davis Lay. Mrs. Murdock attended 
the Kingsbury Congregational grade school and graduated from the Wilcox 
Acadamy in 1916. The family had moved to Hannah, Utah in 1912. Having always 
lived on a farm, Marvel fit right into ranch life when she married Joseph T. 
Murdock, co-owner and operator of a sheep ranch on the upper Duchesne River. 
The Murdocks built a home in Heber in 1925 and then spent the school months in 
Heber and the spring and summer months at the ranch in Duchesne County. 

Mrs. Murdock has been affiliated with the local auxiliary of the Wool Growers 
for many years. In 1944, she was elected vice president of the State of Utah 
Wool Growers auxiliary, serving in this capacity for two years, then serving 
as president of the auxiliary the following two years. Later she served for 
four years as national vice president and two years as president of the 
National Woman's Auxiliary to the National Wool Growers Association. 

The Murdocks are parents of two infant daughters who passed away in infancy: 
Audrey Murdock (May 1919 - June 29, 1922) and Mary Frances Murdock (December 
6, 1922 - December 27, 1922); five sons, three of whom reside in Salt Lake 
City: Lovell Alexander (May 2, 1907-April 20, 1978) is associated with the 
Robins Brokerage Co.; Harvey L. is with the Investors Diversified, Inc., [and] 
Robert Glen (September 13, 1928-May 28, 2011) is with the Surety Life 
Insurance Co.; Joseph Don (1924 - 1985) is assistant to a construction 
contractor in Downey, California, and Allen D. is Captain in the United States 
Air Force.
