Halliday, Flora Fowlke Flora Fowlke Halliday, 94, passed away peacefully Monday, December 06, 2004 in Salt Lake City. Born January 25, 1910 in Lindon, Utah, she was the second of 9 children of Ernest and Esther Hanks Fowlke. On June 4, 1931, she married her high school sweetheart John Halliday in the Salt Lake Temple. When her husband joined the BYU faculty they established their home on 3rd East in Provo where she remained for 60 years. During their BYU years she served as president of BYU Women and periodically worked in the Registrations office. One of her great joys was helping foreign students get established in America, making sure they could survive financially and socially. Flora was a devoted member of the LDS church serving wherever called including as Relief Society president. The 3 years she served with her husband in Milan, Italy where he was mission president gave her many chances to share her love for the Savior. Although Flora was, by nature, a home body her life included a great deal of travel with her husband. In visits to Israel, India, Austria and many other countries she made lifelong friends wherever she went. Flora was an unassuming person who was equally comfortable in the presence of ordinary or powerful people. She truly felt that everyone she met was a brother or sister. Among her grandchildren, Flora was known for her mischievous sense of humor. She was always a sympathetic listener when they needed a shoulder to cry on and they would leave their visits with her laughing at her ironic responses to life's trials. Flora is survived by her three daughters: Carol Startup of Springville; Mary (Garth) Lindsey of Northridge, CA; Ruth (James) Finch of Sandy; 19 Grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and her sisters, Mildred Nisonger, Winifred Fowlke, Lois Larsen and Ola Rodgers. She graduated from Springville High School in 1930, and then graduated from BYU in 1932 with a two-year Normal Degree in Elementary Education. She married Paul M. Haymond on 14 September 1933. She later married Ivan Madsen on 11 November 1966. She was preceded in death by her husbands, and by her sisters, Mabel Simkins (Ray) and Norma Child (Hardy), and by her brother Blaine Averett (Pat). Haymond (Joan) of Provo, UT, Paula Faye Myres (Keith) of San Diego, CA, Maryan Pennington (David) of Billings, MT, John Creed Haymond of Salt Lake City, UT, William Bradley Haymond (Becky) of Corvallis, OR, and step-daughter, LesLee Standifird (Vance) of American Fork, UT. She was also the proud grandmother of 43 grandchildren, 120 great-grandchildren, and two great-great grandsons. You don't have to live to be 93 to be recognized as remarkable. Faye was remarkable at each stage of her life. She inherited her father's intellectual curiosity, leading her to drive the family Model-A delivery truck to BYU campus daily, loaded with all who could hang on. She had an endless thirst for reading and learning, and was quick to accept and master each new advancement in technology. Her influence for good among her family and friends is infinite; she quietly and lovingly taught each to love reading, to participate in and love the Church, to get excited about writing their family histories, and to be good citizens. She emulated her parents' tradition of enjoying "family get-togethers" and hosted a majority of them throughout her life. Grandma Faye will be dearly missed here, but we visualize her organizing family get-togethers with her beloved family on the other side of the veil.
