Jensen, Mary Smart Hales Mary Smart Hales Jensen Mary Smart Hales Jensen, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died of a pulmonary embolism November 16, 2004, in the Orem Timpanogos Hospital. She had lived an active and energetic life prior to her hospitalization. She was born in Roosevelt, Utah, June 24, 1925, to Thomas L. and Nelle Buckwalter Smart, attended Provo schools and in 1947 graduated with an art degree from Brigham Young University, where she was senior class vice-president and a member of the Val Norn Sorority and White Key Honor Society. She married her college sweetheart, Richard Wayne Hales, and earned her PHT (putting hubby through) degree as he received his PhD in nuclear physics at the University of California, Berkley. Five years after Richard's death from cancer in 1964, she married Dilworth Jensen, a noted entomologist at U Cal Berkley. Following his death in 1973 she returned to Provo, earned a masters degree in library science at BYU, and served fourteen years in the Provo school library system, with nine years as the Provo High School head librarian. During that time, she was involved in numerous library boards and was president of the Utah Library Association. Cheerful and optimistic in the face of adversity, with an infectious sense of humor and an abiding love and acceptance of all people, she was always ready for a challenge or new adventure.
