She preceded him in death on November 13, 1984. On February 16, 1985 he married Kathleen Madsen in the Provo LDS Temple. Born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, he cherished the richness of his Hawaiian and Chinese heritage. This foundation helped him to positively view and accept the people and events that touched his life: to join the Army and serve his country during WWII; to become a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1950; to serve the Lord and his family in numerous capacities throughout his life. To bring joy to those with whom he came in contact and our lives have been blessed. Henry had a deep and abiding belief in the pursuit of knowledge, both, temporal and spiritual, formal and informal. He set an example for all his posterity as he earned his Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University. He later went on to complete his Masters in Social Science and his Doctorate degree in Curriculum and Development from Arizona State University. Upon retirement from Brigham Young University, he pursued his writing, music and various projects that kept his mind actively engaged in life and family. Always the listener and teacher, he enriched and emboldened us to pursue our dreams. Ultimately, his knowledge of the Gospel of Jesus Christ guided all aspects of his life. His faith and testimony are the strong and enduring legacy he leaves with us. His faith, his testimony, his love will continue to bless and strengthen our lives and for that we are grateful. Henry is survived by his wife, Kathleen and his children: Avon Chai Stewart, Kim (Cathy) Chai, Rebecca Kaiulani (Tom) Sitake, Nalani (Jerry) Bird, Maui (Kara) Chai, Elizabeth (Michael) Black, Todd Madsen Carter, DaLeen Beth Winnie, Jeffrey Dale Winnie and Daniel Kay Winnie; his daughter-in-law Judith Christensen Chai; 32 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. His wife Mary Ann Price Chai, his son Henry Keonaona Chai II, his son-in-law Randall Keith Stewart and his grandson Michael Joshua Chai, preceded him in death. Akana and Kathryn Momi Leftwich, and his brothers Melvin H. Chai and Thomas Chai preceded him in death.
