He was born August 22, 1932 in Nephi, Utah to Lyndon Leroy and Virginia May Scottorn Carter. He married Margene Shepherd, later divorced. His partner at the time of death was Vera Hubble. He attended West Point and served in the Korean War in Army Intelligence. He attended the University of Utah, was a Real Estate Broker , an Insurance underwriter and Financial Planner. He owned four restaurants, City Center and Blue Whale in Provo, Hobble Creek in Springville and one in Spanish Fork. He is survived by his children, Timothy Jon (Jamie) Carter and Jim Laver (Cindi) Carter all of Scottdale, AZ; Desiree (Axel) Bjerkoe of Oslo, Norway; a sister, Ann (Doyle) Coombs of Nephi, UT; a brother, Jim L. (Myda) Carter of Nephi, UT; 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Preceded in death by his parents, Lynn and Gyppe Carter, a brother, Jack L Carter, a sister, Patsy Iverson; 2 grandchildren, Tina and Michael. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, August 3, 2005 at the Anderson Funeral Home, 94 West 300 North Nephi, UT. Friends may call one hour prior to the services. Rand, Elaine Steiner Elaine Steiner Rand Elaine Steiner Rand passed away Saturday morning, 30 July 2005, at her home in Springville, Utah. She has joined her husband Allen Wilson Rand in the Spirit World. She was born in Logan, Utah, 24 May 1920 to Herman W. Steiner and Lois Elder. She married Allen Wilson Rand on 18 June 1943. They were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on 6 September 1951. She is survived by her three sons, Guilford Allen and his wife Connie Lewis of Springville, Utah, Donald Fletcher and his wife Josette Dhondt of Hamilton, Montana, and Jonathan Warner and his wife Norma Ricks of Glendale, Arizona. She has sixteen grandchildren and twenty six great grandchildren. She is also survived by a brother, Boyd Steiner and his wife Maxine Ray of Mesa, Arizona. Elaine grew up in Salome, Arizona, and attended Mesa High School. She graduated from Arizona State University with a Master s degree in Library Science. She was the head librarian at Deer Valley High School in Phoenix, Arizona until she retired in 1985. She and Allen then moved to Provo, Utah. She enjoyed sports, and was an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan. She also enjoyed an enormous collection of baseball cards and basketball cards. But her passion was genealogy. She had researched over 11,000 names in her family history, and has written several personal histories of her ancestors from the research she has done. The family would like to thank A Plus Hospice, their nursing staff and their certified medical assistants who offered help and support through the last weeks of her life. Funeral services will be held at Berg Mortuary, located at 185 East Center Street, Provo, Utah, at 11:00 am, Thursday 4 August 2005. Friends and family may call one hour prior to the services at Berg Mortuary to pay their respects. Interment will follow the funeral services at the Provo Cemetery. Rawlings, Nelda Joyce Monson Nelda Joyce Monson Rawlings, 83, of Pleasant Grove passed away Sunday, July 31, 2005 at her home. She was born January 14, 1922 in Salt Lake City to Neils and Eltha May Iverson Monson. She married Lawrence Rawlings on September 23, 1940 in the Salt Lake Temple. Nelda grew up in the Manila area of Pleasant Grove and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1940. She and Lawrence made their home in Pleasant Grove and resided in the same house for 63 years where they raised their four children. Nelda designed several additions and remodelings to their home and Lawrence carried them out. Nelda spent countless hours making hand-stitched quilts for family and friends. She was an active member of the LDS Church and the DUP. She and Lawrence traveled to every state in the continental U. S. together. Lawrence passed away in 2003 and Nelda has waited two long years to be reunited with her sweetheart. She is survived by: daughter-in-law, Joyce R. Rawlings, Springville; children: Laura Mae Campbell, Saratoga Springs; Kathleen (Larry) Lee, West Valley City; Jan (Louise) Rawlings, Pleasant Grove; foster-daughter: Janet (Cloic) Humble, American Fork; 23 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael "Mickey"; grandson, Jason and four siblings. Funeral services will be held Friday, August 5, 2005 at 11:00 a.m. in the Timpanogos Stake Center, 800 North 100 West, Pleasant Grove. Friends may call Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Olpin Family Mortuary, 494 South 300 East, Pleasant Grove and at the church on Friday one hour prior to services. Harold LeGrand Selman, 91, died July 31, 2005 at his home in American Fork. Born June 25, 1914 in Bingham Canyon, Utah the son of Joseph Hyrum and Margaret Murtice Roach Selman. He married Ruth Makin on February 25, 1950 in Pocatello, Idaho. Harold was employed at Geneva Steele, for 27 years where he was a hard worker and a loyal employee. Harold was an Army veteran of WWII and he served in Europe and was captured. After his release from the German POW camp, he was awarded the Purple Heart and discharged. He signed up again almost immediately and served in the Pacific in the war against Japan. During his later years his health declined and it was very hard to do all the things he loved to do. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Ruth; children Steven (Terry) Selman; Bonnie (Eddie) Harding; step-children, Irene L. (Allen) Reinhold; Stanley L. (Cherie) Rawlings; 17 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren; siblings Verla Selman Oswald; Dixie (Keith) Selman Simmons; Leo Selman. Preceded in death by his sisters Vivian Selman Bennett, and Gay (Deloy) Selman Coles. Funeral services will be held Wednesday August 3, 2005 at 1:00 p.m. in the Anderson & Sons Mortuary Chapel 49 East 100 North American Fork, friends may call on the family Wednesday from 11:45 to 12:45 prior to the services. She was born in Vernal, Utah to Horace and Leona Watkins Gillman. She married Verl A. Shumway, October 14, 1942 in the Salt Lake Temple. They have four children, Verlyn (Alana) Shumway, Orem; Grant (Mattie) Shumway, Orem; Karen (David) Detro, Longmont, Co.; and Dennis Shumway, Santiquin, Ut. They have 18 Grandchildren and 6 Step Grandchildren, 18 Great-Grandchildren, and 18 Step Great- Grandchildren. Her brothers are Kenneth H. Gillman of Lindon; Garth (Neva) Gillman of Lindon; sister s, Bula (Earl) Gurr, Vernal, Ut. and Reva Cobbley of Brigham City, Ut. At the age of 3 her mother passed away and she was raised by her mothers sister and husband, Charles (Uncle Chuck) and Viola (Aunt Viola) Goodrich. Her brothers and sister there were Junius (Lucy) Goodrich, Venna Goodrich, Ezma (Loran) Reynolds, Ione (Thad) Stringham, Janett (Gene) Weeks, Clinton (Rena) Goodrich. She moved to Lindon at the age of fourteen with her father and uncle Leland. She graduated from Pleasant Grove High school where she was in the Pep Club. Her hobbies were hunting, fishing, camping, sewing, crocheting, home canning, and was an all around great cook. She volunteered as a Pink Lady at Utah Valley Hospital for many years. She worked for the Alpine School District as a School lunch worker. She was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and served as a Visiting Teacher, Stake Relief Society Secretary, and Primary Teacher. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and grandson Jimmy, brothers Junius and Clinton and sister Janett. Funeral Services will be held Thursday August 4th at 11:00 A.M. in the Sunset Height 6th Ward Chapel at 500 South 600 West Orem, with a viewing 9:45 to 10:45 prior to service. A viewing will be held August 3rd from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home, at 646 East 800 North in Orem. Interment will be in the Orem City Cemetery. Varney, Margaret Magdalena Margaret Magdalena Gourley Varney, 83, of Oceanside, CA, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 29, 2005 after a short illness. She was born Oct. 3, 1921, in Salem, Utah to William Clyde and Margaret Eliza Gourley. She married Thomas Stanford Varney on Jan. 26, 1946 in Yuma, Arizona. She was a good homemaker through all his years of moving around in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement in 1965. They then lived in Provo, Utah where she served with her husband in the baptistry of the Provo Temple. Health considerations caused their move to Arizona and then to California where they lived the last 21 years of her life. She enjoyed square dancing and bowling. She was also an accomplished oil painter and seamstress. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she served in the Primary and in several Relief Society presidencies. Margaret is survived by her husband, Stan; three daughters, Nadine Varney (Ron) Ramirez of Blackfoot, ID, Karen Varney of Oceanside, CA, and Margene Varney of Provo, UT; 3 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Virginia May Geslison. Funeral Service will be held Wednesday Aug. 3. 2005, 2:00 PMin the Berg Drawing Room Chapel 185 East Center St. Provo, Utah. A viewing will be held 1 hour prior to service.
