Palica, Toula Toula Palica Early Wednesday morning, August 24, 2005, we were blessed to witness the very last breath of our beloved mother, Toula Palica, 79. An idyllic beginning took many extraordinary turns to fashion a woman who s fierce, unconditional love for her children and family will forever shape the generations ahead. Toula was born August 15, 1926 to Andrianos and Eleni Efstathiou in a small village outside Athens, Greece, the second of four children. During her teen years Greece became an occupied country and the atrocities of war hit her family harshly. Her father was captured while he and his youngest son were in the midst of his black market operation to bring food to the village and was never heard of again. Consequently many members of her family and village starved to death. At the end of WWII Greece was left devastated. Toula s greatest desire was to come to America in hopes of finding a better life. In 1953 she was introduced, through a letter, to John Palica from the USA. They corresponded, through interpreters, when he asked her to marry him, she accepted! He came to Greece that summer for their very first meeting and 2 weeks later on August 19th 1954 they were married in Athens...she spoke no English and he spoke no Greek! Shortly afterward John brought Toula to his home in Southern California where they settled for the next 30 years raising two children. Words are unable to adequately express the extraordinary love and impact she left on the lives of her children and grandchildren except to say that in her last, extremely difficult year, she fought death more than once, to receive just a few more hours with her family and hoping to see her youngest grandson come home from his mission in Africa in November, one last time. Toula is survived by her children, Eleni and John Jr.; her grandchildren Blake, Michelle, Andrew, Kylie, Jamie, Maddie and her younger brother Kristos. It is with gratitude, beyond words, that we thank God for the great blessing of being her children. We love you and honor you forever, mom. Your legacy lives on through us. Funeral services will be held Monday August 29th, 2005 at 12 noon in the Walker Sanderson Funeral Home at 646 East 800 North, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. prior to service. Pendleton, Ruby Elaine Brown Ruby Elaine Brown Pendleton, our dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and beloved friend; passed beyond the veil of her temporal existence on August 24, 2005 at American Fork Hospital, after a recent diagnosis of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Elaine was born on the 28th of November 1924 in Rexburg, Idaho to David Allen Brown and Ruby Ricks Brown. She married Everett Rhead Pendleton in the Salt Lake Temple on September 1, 1949. Their marriage was blessed with four children: Catherine Ruby Pendleton (Kenneth A. Black), Spanish Fork, Utah; Clyde Everett Pendleton (Donna), Palo Alto, California; Teresa Elaine Pendleton (Onni Duvall), Provo, Utah; and Boyd Ralph Pendleton (Julie), Provo, Utah. They were raised in Redwood City and San Carlos, California. Elaine's family was a miracle to her considering that she was told she should never have children after being diagnosed with severe endocarditis as a teenager. Her attitude was one of living life to it's fullest and she would rather have died trying than be kept from the wonderful experiences of life. Elaine worked for Hewlett-Packard for 30 years as an instrument specialist in their Palo Alto, Mountain View and Sunnyvale facilities. She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Mapleton 5th Ward in the Mapleton Utah Stake. She spent her life in service to others with a positive smile and a cheerful countenance. She fulfilled callings in the Primary, Sunday School and Relief Society organizations, and in music, Genealogy, and Temple Work. Her wisdom, experience and joyous, fun-loving, energetic attitude will be missed, but will continue to live through her family members. Her sweetheart, Everett, preceded her in death on May 29, 1998. She is survived by her sister, Iris Updegraff (Jim) of Salt Lake City, Utah; her brother, Myron Brown (Norma) of Aptos, Califomia; her sisters-in-law, Ann Brown of San Carlos, California; Bernice Brown of Rexburg, Idaho; and a brother-in-law, Stewart Pendleton of Salt Lake City, Utah. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the Mapleton Stake Center, 970 North 400 East, Mapleton. A viewing begins at 1 p.m. at the same location.
