Burnell, William Edward (Bill) Grandpa, William Edward (Bill) Burnell, fought a good fight but Grandma came for him in the early hours of Monday, December 5, 2005. Grandpa was a wonderful man who took what life gave to him and made it better. He was born on the 14th of March, 1926 in Corey, Pennsylvania to William John and Ida Henrietta Burnell. He grew up in and around Las Vegas, Nevada. When he should have been attending High School, Grandpa lied about his age to join the Navy and was a gunner stationed aboard the U.S.S. Flint during WWII. He later went back to school to get his high school diploma. He married Della Rothwell on the 29th of May, 1948 in Ely, Nevada. They had been married 52 years when Grandma passed away in 2000. Grandpa worked hard to support his family. He retired from Geneva in 1984. Grandpa loved the scouting program and was able to receive his Eagle Scout Award alongside his fellow leaders and all of their troop. Something that had never been done before. He built may things in his shop and he loved to trap shoot at the Spanish Fork Gun Club and many western states where he won many awards. After he retired he and Grandma became snowbirds and would spend their winters in Overton, Nevada. They made wonderful friends there. When they were home he loved to camp, fish, hunt, and ride horses. He loved the mountains. He loved BYU football. He also loved animals and even though he looked gruff he could easily win the hearts of children. Grandpa resided at the Payson Nursing and Rehab for 2 years and made wonderful friends there. We thank them from the loving care and compassion that they gave him. He has left a void in the hearts of his 3 children, Randy "Growler" (Sissie) Burnell of Salem; Sandra (Ronald) Spencer of Springlake; and William "Ace" (Jolyn) Burnell of Mapleton; 7 grandchildren and 18 grandchildren, but we know that he is with Grandma and his son, George, who passed away in 1960, and many other family and friends. The family would love to share your memories of Bill on Wednesday, December 7th at the Walker Mortuary, 187 S. Main, in Spanish Fork from 6-8 p.m. and Thursday 9:30-10:30 a.m. Grandpa will be buried next to Grandma in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery where full military rites will be offered by the VFW at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
