Ken was born in St. Anthony, Idaho on October 22, 1927 to George Edward and Marie McFarland Ainge. His sister, Shirley Marie, was one of his best friends. He graduated from UCSB and went on to get his Masters at UCLA and his doctorate at BYU. He has three children from his first marriage to Jane Wood and became step-dad to three more children when he married Barbara Brainard in 1985. Ken served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Army in Japan for 1-1/2 years right after World War II. When he returned from the Pacific he worked as Advertising Manager for three Sears stores in Ventura County, CA. During the 1950's he was very proud of his work for the LDS Institute program under Paul H. Dunn. It was during this period that he started a publication for all LDS college students in Southern California. In 1967 he joined the founding faculty of Moorpark College and also served as director of the Institute on campus. He was elected to the Conejo Valley School District Board of Education in 1977. He ended up as head of the Department of Business and Technology at Moorpark College, retiring in 1987. He and Barbara then moved to Mapleton, Utah where Ken became a gentleman farmer raising sheep and peaches. He was called to the Mapleton Stake Presidency in 1993 and served until he and Barbara moved to St. George in 1998. They were the first residents of the new adult retirement community known as Sun River. Ken established a golf car business in St. George working with his daughter Lisa as his mechanic. Ken was an avid BYU fan. In fact he and Barbara did a service mission on campus just last year with the Cougar Club. He was also extremely fond of golf and enjoyed spending time on the course with his loved ones. He planted an extensive vegetable garden every year and loved to can fruit during the summer months. He is survived by his wife of 20 years, Barbara, and by his sons, Ken, Jr. (Cyndi) of West Jordan, and Brad of Lehi, and daughter Lisa McCaslin (Lary) of Santa Clara; step-daughters Kristen Drake of San Dimas, CA and Lauren Arendt (Pete) of Kansas City, MO and step-son David Driskel of Colorado. He is also survived by his sister Shirley Armor (Campbell) of Indio, CA and four handsome nephews. All the family plus his 14 grandchildren and his "toy border collie" Dixie will miss him greatly and appreciate his love, support, and example. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 9, 2005, at 11:00 a.m., at the Sun River LDS 1st Branch, 4461 Country Club Dr., St. George, Utah. A visitation will be held Friday, from 9:30-11:00 a.m., prior to services at the branch. There will also be a funeral service held Saturday, December 10, at 10 a.m., at the LDS Chapel at 450 S. Canyon Rd, in Springville, Utah. Interment will be in the Spanish Fork City Cemetery, Spanish Fork Utah, under the direction of Metcalf Mortuary 435-673-4221. Ash, June Pearl West June Pearl West Ash, 82, of Pleasant Grove passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at the home of her daughter Connie in Layton, Utah. She was born May 26, 1923 in Pleasant Grove to Loren Milton and Pearl Radmall West. She married Romell Ash and together had four children. They were later divorced. June lived in Pleasant Grove all of her life. She worked for many years at the Polar King and the Purple Turtle. She enjoyed drawing and writing many things, including writing the skits for Road Shows in her ward. She was always a hard worker and will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her four children: Dennis and Vicki Ash, Orem; LaVee Harder, Mapleton; Connie and Dian Skinner, Layton; Vickie Keele (husband Lee, deceased), Orem and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Graveside services for June will be held Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. Bringhurst, Elizabeth "Betty" Elizabeth "Betty" Stevens Bringhurst, passed away Tuesday, December 6, 2005 at the age of 86. She was born September 1, 1919 in Salt Lake City, Utah to Eugene R. and Lilly Terry Stevens. Betty was the third of five children. At the age of seven, the family moved to Provo where she attended Maeser School, Farrer Jr. High, and graduated from Provo High in 1937. She married Ned E. Shurtleff and later divorced. Betty worked at Leven's Department Store in Provo. She married Wells Bird Bringhurst on July 25, 1947 in Springville where she lived for 58 years. Betty was a very patriotic person and supporter of veteran's rights. She was a charter member of the Veteran's of Foreign Wars Auxiliary Post 5787 and was still serving as President at the time of her death. Betty was also a member of the Hafen-Dallin Club and enjoyed the Springville Art Gallery. Betty was a member of the LDS Church and a visiting teacher for many years. She was an avid reader, reading two newspapers every day. She enjoyed working in her yard. She was a collector and had many interesting collections. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wells on December 31, 1989; her parents; brothers, Grover and Jay Stevens; sisters, Nell Perry and Deane Reilly; and a great-grandson Tyler. She is survived by her children: Judy (Larry) Carter of Riverton; Terry (Steven) Killpack of Salem; and Steven (Deanna) Bringhurst of St. George; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and a sister-in-law, Donna Stevens. Mother gives a special thanks to her longtime friend Marie Mason. Funeral services will be held at Wheeler Mortuary, 211 East 200 South in Springville on Saturday, December 10, 2005 at 11 a.m. There will be a viewing at the mortuary Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday one hour prior to the services. Steven Michael Garbett, loving husband, father, son, brother and friend, passed away, Tuesday, December 6, 2005 in Heber City, Utah. He was born September 10, 1956 in Spanish Fork, Utah to Max and Leah Stubblefield Garbett. He grew up in Payson and Eureka, Utah. Steven graduated from Tintic High School and Utah Technical College of Provo in Diesel Mechanics. On August 13, 1977 he married Patsy Ann Minnick and together they had 2 children, Matthew Steven Garbett, Payson and Ashley (Brannon) Lucas of Lehi, Utah. They were the love of his life. He worked for Tyler's, Inc. for 25 years before taking over the business with a partner in 2001. Being a crane operator for many years, Steve came to know a lot of people that he cherished as "his special friends". Steve had a big heart and would do anything to help a friend or someone in need. Steve loved the outdoors and spending time with family and friends. He loved the times he got to spend with his special friends riding steel horses and chasing the sun. A special thanks to Danny and Linda Nielson for all the special memories - he loved you both. Survivors include: his wife and son of Payson; his daughter and son-in-law of Lehi; his parents of Eureka; a sister, Teresa (Evans) Long of Eureka; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Miller, Carrie Samuels Ephraim, Utah - Carrie Lynn Samuels Miller, formerly of Payson - Spanish Fork, beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend passed away on December 4, 2005, after a 3 year battle with uterine cancer. She passed away at the University of Utah Medical Center surrounded by family and loved ones. She was born October 20, 1963 in Payson, Utah, to Don and Gayle Samuels, where she was mainly raised and graduated from Payson High School. She also attended Southern Utah State College, in Cedar City, Utah. She married Bruce Miller on May 19, 1983 and they were later happily sealed at the Manti temple, in November of 1985 for time and all eternity. Carrie was an avid quilter and blessed many lives with her beautiful work. She also enjoyed cross-stitching, tole-painting, baking, and other crafts and handiwork. Carrie devoted her life to her sons, Christopher and Destry, who were involved in numerous sports and scouting where she often volunteered. She was well loved by her sons and their friends, to whom she was known as "Mama Miller". She enjoyed the last seven years of her life living in Sanpete County, where she made many friends and served in the church. She is survived by: her husband, Bruce; sons, Christopher John, of Salt Lake City; Destry James, serving in the Illinois Chicago North Mission; parents, Don and Gayle Samuels of Spring City, Utah; brothers, Bryan of Highland, Utah; Michael (Rarnona) of Spanish Fork, Utah; Tony (Emily) of Orem, Utah; James (Tina) of Payson, Utah; Jerry (Kris) of Fountain Green, Utah; grandfather Milton Schmidt of Dinuba, Ca, along with aunts and uncles, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by grandparents. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, December 10, 2005, 1:00 p.m. at the Walker Mortuary at 587 South 100 West, in Payson, Utah, where friends may call 1 hour prior to services.
