Published in the Daily Herald on 12/13/2005. Hansen, Walter Walt Andrew "Walt" Walter "Walt" Andrew Hansen passed away Sunday 11 Dec 2005 in Orem, Utah, from complications of atherosclerosis. Walter was born in Provo, Utah, on January 29, 1926, to Henry "Harry" Houchen Hansen and Dora Andrea Jensen Hansen. He grew up in southwest Provo and worked hard on his grandfather Jensen's farm. He learned carpentry skills from his father and also worked for Provo Brick and Tile. He had fond memories of his mother's melodious voice and love for gardening, and was deeply saddened at her passing when he was 16. Walt graduated from Provo High School where he was a good student and was on the football team. Close to graduation time Walter and several other young men enlisted in the armed forces. Walt became a shipboard electrician and served in the Navy from 1944-1946. He was training in the Philippines for the invasion of Japan when the war ended. Walt then continued his training as an industrial electrician in Chicago. While there he met his sweetheart and eternal companion, Julia Fern Cerny. They were married in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on 10 Sep 1948. In 1955, while building their home in southwest Provo, Walt became gravely ill with his third episode of rheumatic fever. After unsuccessful medical treatment, and lying near death, he stopped all medicines and trusted in a priesthood blessing. Soon he was healed. This was a turning point in his life, which was filled with service. Walter served in many capacities in the LDS church, including bishopric counselor, bishop, high counselor, stake president, gospel doctrine teacher, and patriarch. He also served the community as Dixon Junior High PTSA president, followed by 21 years of service on the Provo City School Board. Because of his down-to-earth wisdom Walt was sought out by many for his advice. After 44 years as an electrician, foreman, and maintenance superintendent at Pacific States Cast Iron Pipe Company, he retired. Walt and Julia then served as a couple in the Australia Adelaide Mission 1989-1991. They returned to volunteer together at the Provo MTC, enjoy their family, and maintain a beautiful yard. His wife, Julia, and three children survive Walter: Cynthia Gale (Douglas), Dennis Hansen (Modina), and Sharlene Hansen; 11 grandchildren, and 4 great grandchildren. His sisters, Dorothy Christen and Norma Lane, and a grandson, Glen, preceded him in death. We sorrow at our loss, but rejoice in his reunion and ability to work and serve to full capacity and happiness. Services will be held Thursday, 15 Dec 2005, at the Sunset 9th Ward Chapel, 1560 S. 1100 W., Provo, Utah, at 11 a.m. Family and friends may call Wednesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at the same church and 90 minutes prior to services.
